@ Lambert:

When it comes to new consoles, my general opinion is to wait a year after it's release before deciding on purchasing it. By this point the first of the big games will be coming out and the game developers will actually have a feel for how to create games for it. There's also the added bonus that the consoles may actually be cheaper by this time, especially in the Christmas run-up.

If you have a dying PS2 and games for it, it may be worth investing in a PS3, or at the very least a newer PS2 (seeing as they will be cheap). Do a bit of research online or into gaming magazines to see what sort of games will be coming out for the consoles and see what will suit your fancy. From the background you gave us it would seem that XBox or PS3 are the ones you should be looking into.

Sorry, but I've always been highly annoyed by "backwards compatibility." Unless you live in a broom closet or switch between systems on a near-daily basis, there's no reason for this to be an issue.

Anyway, I'll go with the Wii. I've always bought Nintendo's system first, and they've yet to disappoint me. It's also the only one doing something, y'know, different from what everybody has done since... hell, since the NES came out, maybe even the Atari 2600.

I'll likely get a PS3 or 360 down the road, depending on when their price goes down and what games come out for each. PCs require a little more upgrading than I care to deal with, especially since there aren't many PC titles that interest me. It's mainly a casual gaming platform for me.

Yes you're absolutely right however what does one do when the old system dies and there is no possibility to replace it with a new unit. The new system being backward compatible enables you to enjoy those old games years after the old system is finally phased out of production. I'm looking at the problem with a long term vision.

Now yes it's cumbersome to switch between the existing old system and the new one but initially I'll still be playing the old game only I'll be using the new system! ;)

I have a lot of SNES games that are just sitting there because my old console is kaputt. Now the Wii offers me a chance to play those old SNES titles again. Not sure how it will work but I'm hoping it's just a simple matter of plugging in the old carts into the Wii and not having to pay Nintendo for a new media format to play my old games which I already own.

You have to download them.

I suppose I can buy that.

As Chukchu Husky pointed out, you do have to download them. I don't remember the price for each console, but it's generally less than what you'd pay in a used games shop. I think it's $8 for SNES games and $5 for NES, and I don't remember N64 price.

Nope!

I already have a 360 (I don't think I've ever had as much fun with a console in such a short amount of time), I'll be getting a Wii probably close to launch, and I'll be getting a PS3 when it comes down in price a couple hundred dollars.

I have a 360, I plan on buying a PS3 sometime next year, and for Christmas this year, I'm getting a custom rig for gaming. I think that I should be set for a while.

I will never buy an X-Box, because its from microsoft.

Wii vs PS3, Wii has to get my vote, since i screwed up the laser on my GameCube and my PS2 still works. Also, Wii is cheaper, and has Mario.

So you have a PC from Microsoft, but not buy an Xbox from Microsoft? Or do you have a Mac?

I have a PC from Microsoft, because it is the most commonly used so most things are made for it.

There hasnt been a single reason for me to buy an Xbox, because any game that I have wanted to play available for Xbox is also available for the Playstation or the Nintendo.

You show me a PC made by microsoft.:mischief:
No PC is made by microsoft, just the operating system. PC is combination of compatible components from various manufacturers and you can have a PC without microsoft windows you know. Linux is out there too ;).
