In my first game, I made one great person and didn't think much about it. This second time, I have a few and they are incredibly powerful. My Spain just had Christopher Columbus, and he reveals the entire map! It has shown me a vulnerable independent power on an island that would have taken me many years to discover on my own.

They actually seem rather easy to create, especially given their power.

They are quite important parts of their civ abilities, and I like them mechanically - they can always spice up dull stretches. But can be frustrating when you're hoping for a specific one and the RNG is against you.

Egypt has some powerful wonder finishers (including the return of Civ6s Imhotep) and one of the Siamese guys turned a city state into a town immediately. Big surprise for the neighbors. (I hope the AI is using those btw.)

There are great people? I've played through a whole game and didn't see any...
They are civ specific only. Depending on the civs you select you might not see any.

If the civ has unique quarter, you build this and then you get to build a unit which is a great person. They are super powerful. Once I have my military out getting this quarter built is priority and then I start pumping these out. My current game I got two that speed ups indeed (I used both and built coliseum in one turn), another gave me two promoted medjays and I think another boosted my library.

It should be noted that not every civ that has a unique quarter has a unique great person. Rome for example does have a unique quarter but not a great person right?

Hmmm not sure I have played Egypt and Spain and both had these. When I played Rome I wasn’t paying attention as it was my first game and I was all oooohhh ahhhhh perty

Correct. Rome just has a unique Commander unit.

The Maya has a unique quarter too, but their civilian unit is a unique scout. Not every civ who has a unique quarter will have a unique Great Person, but when they do it usually comes from their unique quarter. :)

This is one of the things I am liking about this game, so much variety between the different civs

I was able to build conquistador in a distant land that didn't have unique district though

Another note - Civ does not need UQ for a Great Person. China has UI - they build theirs once Capital has, I believe, 10 Citizens.

The game guide says you just need a wharf in the city.
