Spain - Exploration Age Civilization Discussion

Does anyone know what's up with the hot air balloons? I thought they were invented in "Modern Age" France.
I was thinking the same, could it be a hint for a future "modern era" Spain and potential rename of "exploration era" Spain into Castile?

Could it be a hint at some form of mechanic to be able to continue to the next era with your current civ?

At last. Spain as it should be.
1. Conquistadores are now a kind of hero. And not a band of fighting men (which should be Tercio). Now FXIS GOT IT RIGHT!
2. This is the best part. TERCIO IS NOW SPANISH UU.

But the emblem is too bland to me, a broad brim hat with feeathers. the actual emblem is crossing weapons.

Like this.

Descriptions and meanings for the Spanish uniques:

  • Conquistador (Civilian) - "Conqueror" - Spanish (and Portuguese) soldiers and explorers who conquered territory in the New World, often in search of lucrative resources
  • Tercio (Military) - "third" - Elite military units of the Spanish Empire, among the first to use a mix of pikes and firearms sucessfully
1. FXis got it right now. Conquistadore is now a hero of sort.
2. Tercio means 'of Third'. Originally these were combined arms infantry block consisted of well balanced three combat elements; Melee (Pikemen, Halberdiers, Rodelero Swordsmen), Ranged (Archers, Crossbowmen, and more famously Arquebusiers and Musketeers), and Anticavalry (Pikemen). each working to use the best one of theirs can do to make up for the worst of others (or what other can't while oneself capable of). Theoretically perfect combat teamworks.
Eventually, Shock Elements (Swordsmen, Men At Arms, and Halberdiers) were eliminated as these elements became useless over time. Pike and Shotte warfare of the Early Modern Period has no room for Wuxia swing weapons combat skills--masses of men confronting each other, each with a very long pointy sticks, next to, and behind each of these, with goons with guns shooting through the opening in the walls of woods and fleshes. where's the empty space to swing swords and halberds properly to make manifests of skills that consumed men at arms's childhood and teens life?

I think (as was shown in Antiquity with the Legions) a UU can span an entire age getting upgrades at technologies through the Age
So the Tercio at the beginning of the Age is far weaker than the Tercio at the end of the Age (probably with a boost from Gunpowder or Gunpowder Mastery)
Tercio term is used at 15th Century. before that the different name might be used.
The other (maybe better) alternative could be Ginettes.

^ This is what Conquistadores look like. The previous iterations is very much mixed up.

^ This is what Emblem of Spain properly is. instead of a bull's head.

And no! Spain gets Tercio RIGHT AT THE VERY BEGINNING!

Playing with Isabella is a sure mean to unlock Spain from any Antiquity civ.
Also I would guess you could gameplay unlock Spain by having
A Natural Wonder in your border?
A Natural Wonder & a Coastal Settlement?
A Natural Wonder in a Coastal Settlements Borders?

The appearance of the Tercio, Heavy Archer and Cog right at 400 CE finally answers the question that we've asking for a while: what happens to the Antiquity units after transition? The answer is, as some suggested, that they are automatically upgraded to Tier 1 Exploration Age units, and that the unit icons seen in the Exploration tech tree are Tier 2 and 3 upgrades or alternatives (such as the Crossbow and Carrack).

Also, we can see elsewhere on the map examples of what Exploration Age infantry looks like for civs that don't have an infantry replacement UU. Which finally answers what that banner icon is.

I'm really not sure of that... I'm under the impression that there are 3 unlocks for every civ... Spain is Isabella, Rome and Greece !

We only saw
Play as Greece
Play as Rome
Play as Isabella

Spain doesn't have many bonuses towards natural wonders. That's just Isabella.

We haven't been told anything about a set number of unlocks. It's not clear if every civ has a gameplay unlock or not, though that would make sense. After mentioning it about Mongolia, it seems to be something they're not ready to talk about.

I forgot the NW were Isabella, but they seem to be avoiding showing the gameplay unlocks, since none have been seen so far.

I would guess for Spain
Coastal cities (instead of just settlements because of their City upgrade)
Navy

^ So far. It is a WIP but I don't see other unit icons beyond Catapult, Trebuchet and Tercio. I doubht Spanish Kingdom can exists without knights. and I don't think Tercio also has the same mobility as knights (and thus knights were also parts of Tercio. but no crossbowman as separate unit? fine. crossbows were part of tercio anyway.

Most of the unit icons are missing, so I'm not sure what's up with this version of the tree.

Well some of the Conquistadors give infantry, ranged and cavalry units so Spain must have access to those types and we have seen those to be there previously so probably just some funky build where they have removed those for some reason. Maybe they are in the middle of reworking their locations on the tech tree or something.
