Year: 800 AD.
North America: At peace, but with rising tensions.
Hudson Powers: Strong, encroaching - if united.
Sioux: Old allies, but disturbingly-strong even without allies.
Honduras: Distant, impoverished.
Canada: Recovering, surrounded. Impatient.
Constantinople: Filled with intrigue.
Jonathan Shade: Pondering.
---
Jonathan Shade was pondering. The map in front of him was assembled by much effort, and the information on it was to kill for. The Regent of Canada urgently wanted to kill somebody - it was outrageous. Much as he suspected, the Warlord boasts of "Canadian might" were unfounded. Canada's army was the greatest in the world... but it was surrounded by hostile neighbours who were traditionally prepared to fight Canada. And Canadians themselves were traditionally prepared to fight the world. It always was WE vs. THEY. But THEY were stronger right now.
Canada: surrounded by enemies and false friends. That is, there was right now only one country Jonathan Shade trusted apart from Canada - Honduras, which had nothing, absolutely nothing to gain from doing harm to Canada. And indeed the visit to it has persuaded him that even if it wanted to do harm it was powerless to do it - its economy was even worse off then the Canadian one. That ofcourse also meant that Honduras could do nothing to help Canada if it were to go to war.
Jonathan Shade smirked. The encirclement of Canada... idiots. Luckily, his enemies outside of Canada were just as stupid as the Warlords within. Had they had any brains they should have invaded twenty five years ago, when Canada was still a weak, poor country plagued by inner strife. Had they invaded them they would have simply overran Canada, their traditional enemy. Too late now, though.
Too late. But Canada was still encircled, and there was no way to break out of it. The Warlords demanded war, and the Merchants begun to realize that it is unavoidable as well. But war at this moment would be suicide. Jonathan Shade knew that there was a hard task in front of him.
But he wasn't the kind of man that surrenders. At all. He would find a way out.
There was nobody else who could do it.
