See, I have creative names for my stories. You guys are all uncreative. :p

Feh. I never use titles. Titles are for schmuckers. :p

BTW, any new series lately? Have seen all the latest of the running ones. :(

Well, I'm digging into Shinigami no Ballad. It makes me vaguely sad. I like it.

I'm also still hanging around waiting for new episodes of the new Higurashi as well as Lucky Star. Other than those, though, I can't help you much. :(

Why not watch some awesome oldies which you've probably already seen before? Like Evangelion or the original Gundam or Cardcaptor Sakura. :p

Thanks Kal. The only thing I noticed is that Silver Streak definately did not write "Duel of Fate" ;) Other than that, it's brilliant :D

What? You claim to have a lower brain as well? :p

On a more serious note, the list is a great contribution to this NES. After all, it was the founding idea of PureNES wasn't it?

Temple of Murals

The stone was still cool where Couvan touched his fingers to its surface. He placed both hands against the column, then leaned into it, taking refuge from the accumulating heat and the bright summertime sun that already made the other face of the pillar warm to the touch. Only inches away late morning made itself known from an even light blue expanse, having long since stripped any nighttime dew from the grass and now readily bringing it out upon the faces of those venturing exposed under the cloudless sky.

In the shade of the shrine, Couvan was safe from the overly passionate touches of Mistress Sun. Since the roof had been finished he was able to carry out his job in much more comfort, as both he and his work were far better protected from the elements.

Many other shrines stood nearby, spaced amongst the clearing. Half finished flagstone walkways wound their way through the tall grass and past low forsythia and young maples from one little temple to the next. Each differed in details of ornamentation and structure but all shared the same basic form, except for one worn old altar off to the side. Barely a shack, that humble little site of devotion had been there for decades or even centuries, and was simply a crudely cut square wooden abode, paint weathered almost to invisibility, generations of prayer symbols hung like vines from every edge.

The other shrines were of newer construction, most in fact still unfinished. Some were built of sturdy levelly hewn timbers, others of laboriously fitted stone, but all were formed from a circular set of columns supporting a shallow conical roof.

This site was on the edge of the city of Mending, over a day's march south of old Singidunum. Mending had only recently grown from a tiny village into a city, but it was now probably the most important city in all Singidu. Old Singidunum had more people in summertime, but Mending's population was more stable, and greatly exceeded that of any other local city in all other seasons. The last two Chiefs had both been barons of Mending, and the Masters and Hands nowadays usually carried out most of their work from the city and most even resided in nearby lodgings.

The sound of a few stray hammers clinking in the distance redirected Couvan's attention and he took his eyes off the surrounding complex and moved towards the center of the shrine. Some days construction here was bustling, with all manner of noise and mayhem, but given how much work was going on citywide there could be times when the place was nearly deserted and natural quiet returned. Couvan preferred to work in such conditions. Today was one such day—no doubt some excitement somewhere else in the city had momentarily captured the efforts of the craftsmen and the attention of the crowds.

He did not really intend to stay in this city forever. He owned no land (years ago he had happily sold his share of the family plot in the far off hills to his siblings) and preferred to stay on the move. Like so many others, the prospects of a chance to really practice his skills on some worthwhile endeavor had drawn him to this bustling town, and he had not yet been disappointed.

In the central chamber the small ceiling opening let down a strong narrow beam of of brightness to supplement the diffuse light glancing in from the outer pillars. Here at the focal point of the building a ring of small columns grew out of the floor and supported the timbers above. Below eye level the base of the columns carried carved inscriptions. The symbols were small and densely packed, but easily legible: The foreman of the carving crew, Heian, had spent time in Habyte and had learned a considerable amount from their master carvers. Whenever he had the chance Heian expressed disdain for cutting writing, much preferring to sculpt scenery and his personal style of fluid abstractions, but he had been hired for the tale murals and the quality of his work was excellent.

The glyphs told of events long past and recent alike, some of which had probably never happened and most of which had little to overtly do with religion. Such is the way of the Singidu: A good yarn is a good yarn, and dogma's not worth listening to unless it's interesting.

Heian had partially gotten his way; above the stark rows of writing was a narrow borders carrying small intricate carving and designs. And above that, the top section of the columns stood blank. This was Couvan's workplace. He was no carver or poet of verse. He knew only enough about words to read and interpret the inscriptions into pictorial form, knew only enough about stone to get paint to stick to it. His meter was shape and color, his chisel was plaster and dye. All of this would be illustrated, in each of more than a dozen shrines every pillar would be wrapped up with visual depictions of the spiral of the past, a worship of memory and life to be recited, heard, seen, felt—he had been told that the bronzeworkers would come soon to put in the wind flues, giant organs for the the top of the shrines that when opened on a breezy day would sound their long low steady notes across the fields.

That would be later, anyway, and much pillar had to be painted before those dirty hammer and tong workers got to rummaging around in here and smudging his surface. Couvan opened his satchel at his feet and began setting up his materials. He raised his hand and patted the resilient cool stone, and got to work.

(On a somewhat related note, Singidu levies returning home (quite some time ago) from the war with the Jiru brought back knowledge of Lugine's spring worship, which went along quite nicely with Dimini veneration, and has gained a moderate following in slightly altered form among our people.)

I'm almost done with the update. There were 6 major wars, and 8 destroyed cities. Many nations are no more, or drastically changed. But others did quite well for themselves. I wrote it in an interesting style that was slightly battle-centric this time. Tell me whether you like it or not after the update, tomorrow. ;)

Oh no, my fabled land of Exilia! D; I fear for your life.

What about mine, then? Shiver me timbers, says I! :S

Hnh. Guess it's time to lead some remnants of The People east or something. I can always find a way to save them if I get destroyed, which is likely.
