Putting a Pope into Papacy

In Medieval 2, how does one put a Pope of your choice onto the throne?

Well, the only way is to build priests, hope they become cardinals, and use those votes to select a pope... but the problem is, you can't tell the pope what to do, and you sure as hell can't send him to Avignon... unless you conquer then papacy, then give him Avignon. But it just isn't the same :)

Don't forget you can buy votes though be prepared to waste a lot of cash even on long time allies.

Get alot of Cardinals as said earlier, but all it really does is make the Pope like you

Of course, you could jsut play as the Papel states, everyone you attack gets excommunicated :mischief:

They'll likely vote for you anyway, provided your candidate has 8-10 piety.

The only surefire way is to assassinate any pope who isn't your own - just have a whole bunch of assassins near Rome (preferably skilled ones) to do this every turn until the pope is from your country. It'll take awhile until your cardinals dominate the College of Cardinals, but eventually, you'll have a majority of the cardinals.

Granted, the Church wouldn't approve of such a scheme, but it does work - I've done it before! If you're really cunning, you can even completely eliminate the College of Cardinals and papacy. Which wouldn't be too useful unless you were a Muslim state hoping to stop crusades (since you need a Pope for a crusade), or wanted to hone your assassin's skills, but hey - it is possible.

The other strategies are more traditional and commonly acceptable, but if you want surefire...

I thought about doing that at some point...

Until I realized just how mad other civs would be at me.:D

A mixture of priest leveling and cardinal assassinations, iirc killing the pope is way harder than picking off cardinals. I find it pretty easy to stuff the college that way.
The pope will end up hating you anyway if you keep declaring on Catholics though.

in the early game try to recruit all your priest from one province (which ought to have a church or better if you can afford it) to get a theologician's guild for extra piety boost

Recruit a lot of priests and send them to the land of infidels.

And some of the priest I created has a title of bishop? Does that has to do with the level of church I have in the cities?

I think it does.

Is it easier for bishops to become cardinals? Do they have higher piety, or just a fancy costume?

The only time I've ever gotten bishops was when I had a city with a high level church and theologian's guild, and they came out automatically as bishops. But yes, I think bishops get priority to become cardinals when a seat is vacant.
