Qin Continents Monarch Game

Yes u could get currency and make infra and win that way...... Or u could get construction in 6 turns and a continent to yourself.....

The alternative of course is to research Currency - Code of Laws - Aesthetics - Calendar - Mysticism - Polytheism - Literature - Drama - Music and build the Mausoleum of Mausollos, the Parthenon, the Great Library, and National Epic completely neglecting Military while Ragnar builds a stack of 39 Swordsmen and 23 Axemen and jumps on Beijing.

:joke:

So I prefer the idea of rebuilding the Economy - then rebuilding the Military. My Research path was:

Spoiler :

Turn 120 - Currency - I was slightly negative gpt at 0% slider for quite some time. This decisively changed the situation.
Turn 127 - Code of Laws - I intend to whip some Courthouses and complete the economic fix.
Turn 128 - Archery - I really got spooked by a stack from Ragnar and wanted to build some City Defenders to free up my Axemen in case he comes calling. I was neglecting my military for far too long.

Currently working on Construction - I expect to finish within 5 Turns or so.

I am *still* waiting for my opponents to research the Alphabet. I should have self-teched it a long time ago like I was advised to. The only useful trade I think I can get out of it is Iron Working and they do not seem to be showing too many signs of out-teching me.

Brennus appears to be busy expanding and Ragnar is building units. I expect that to by why they are taking so long getting to the Alphabet.

On the other Continent somebody got to Code of Laws on Turn 114 and somebody built the Oracle - and I am guessing they got Monarchy. I am also suspecting this was done through Priesthood and not Currency.

My production log is as follows:

Spoiler :

Turn 116 - Library in Guangzhou - Start Barracks
Turn 118 - Lighthouse in Nanjing - Start Library
Turn 120 - The Hanging Gardens in Beijing - Start Market
china120hanginggardens.jpg

Turn 121 - Granary in Xian - Start Library
Turn 123 - Markets in uMgungundlovu and Shanghai
Turn 124 - Aqueduct in Shanghai - Start Axeman
Turn 125 - Library in Nanjing - Start Work Boat
Granary in Chengdu - Start Library
Turn 126 - Market in Ulundi
Turn 127 - Aqueduct in Ulundi - Start Axeman

This is where my Chariot saw a stack of 2 Swords, 2 Axes, 2 Spears and 2 Archers moving southward through the Viking Empire and decided to build up some Defensive units. So I researched Archery and finished up whatever I was building and started building Archers.

Turn 128 - Great Engineer in Beijing - I settled him because the 6 Beakers is equivalent to a Scientist and the 3 Hammers puts my Base Production at 26 so I can build 1 Archer per Turn. Metal Casting for the cheap Forges may have been nice - or an Instantly built Chichen Itza. Ah well - More Great People are coming.

I even upgraded the Warrior in Beijing to an Axeman.

1 Archer per turn plus several Axemen + a City Walls (1 Turn Build right before arrival) in Beijing really ought to grind anything Ragnar throws at me to a halt.

Turn 129 - Market in Beijing - Start Archer

On Ragnar's front - Birka has 1 Sword, 3 Axes and 1 Archer.

Turn 130 - Archer in Beijing
Aqueduct in uMgungundlovu - Start Archer
Axeman in Shanghai - Start Archer
Barracks in Guangzhou - Start Walls - Would you believe it?
Work Boat in Nanjing - Start Barracks

Turn 131 - Archer in Beijing and Shanghai
Turn 132 - Archer in Beijing
Walls in Guangzhou - Another slowdown tactic
Turn 133 - Archer in Beijing
Courthouse in Shanghai - Start Archer

Somebody built the Great Lighthouse - I think it was on the other Continent but will load my game up and check.

I promoted my Woodsman 1 Warrior to a Spearman and stationed him in Chengdu. The Celts have access to Horse and Chariots.

Turn 134 - Archer in Beijing and Guangzhou
Barracks in Nanjing - Start Settler
Library in Xian - Start Barracks
Courhouse in Ulundi

Turn 135 - Archer in Beijing and Shanghai
Axeman in Ulundi - Start Archer
Library in Chengdu - Start Barracks
Courthouse in uMgungundlovu

So maybe I am silly. I thought Ragnar was going to attack around Turn 130 and cranked out the Archers to free up the Axes for a counterstrike. I even diverted my research to Construction so that I can go stack crushing.

Ah well - I should be able to slow down by building and speed up my Research. There is a lot on the list of things to do - Here is my list:

1. Finish Construction - I can interbuild Catapults now.
2. Calendar - I might as well grab those resources.
3. Iron Working - There is a Jungle out there and I know there is Iron hiding out near Ulundi.
4. Aesthetics - This opens up the Parthenon. I am using a lot of Represenation Scientists and I am thinking about chopping it in Shanghai. If I get it then I will go for the Mausolleum of Mausollos.
5. Mysticism
6. Polytheism - This opens the path to......
7. Literature - I am thinking the Great Library + National Epic in Ulundi.
8. Metal Casting - Cheap Forges
9. Machinery - mmmmm...... Cho-Ko-Late Crossbowmen!
10. Engineering

Thoughts:

Depending on how strong my research machine gets I might make a run at Music and grab a Golden Age. The lack of Alphabet on my Continent and Tech Trades might put this idea out of the question.

With Metal Casting I can switch from Slavery to Caste System and build Workshops and effectively exchange Food for Production at a 1 to 1 rate whenever I need Hammers and Representation Scientists for Beakers.

When I get through the list above I would like to overrun my opponents with Catapults, Trebuchets, and Cho-Ko-Nu.

Here is my situation at 500AD:

I enjoy reading your walkthrough harv, nice humour you have.

This game seems to be in a good shape as well ;)

^^ Thanks. :)

I played up to Turn 160 - or 1000AD.

The Research Machine is chugging along and picking up steam!

Turn 138 - Construction - Always comes in handy!
Turn 143 - Aesthetics
Turn 144 - Mysticism
Turn 146 - Polytheism - Now I can build the Parthenon!
Turn 150 - Literature
Turn 157 - Metal Casting
Turn 158 - Iron Working - Finally - Welcome to the Iron Age! 960AD :lmao: What was the latest date you researched Iron Working?

Currently working on Calendar and expect to be done that....... shortly. Right now my economy is occupied actively fighting Ragnar and close to running negative gpt at 0% slider so am stuck with Representation Scientists.

I will either research Machinery - Engineering or Music and maybe get a Golden Age with the Great Artist and make the switch to Caste System while at it. With Calendar and Metal Casting I have outgrown the need for Slavery.

Neither the Celts nor the Vikings have researched the Alphabet! What is up with that?

Spoiler :

china160wth.jpg

Look at the year! :rotfl:

I do not see too much evidence of being out teched anywhere. I saw the Statue of Zeus built (Turn 158) somewhere on the other Continent - in the same place as the Great Lighthouse. That means somebody over there has researched Aesthetics.

I saw a Coloseum in some Viking Cities - Then I saw some Catapults so Ragnar has had Construction for some time. It is too late.

Brennus founded Christianity on Turn 151 - so he has researched Theology and access to the Apostolic Palace. It will be nice if he does - I have Hinduism in many of my cities because he is spamming Missionaries. I will be able to build Monestaries and Temples everywhere for lots of Hammers. Ragnar will be destroyed by the time Brennus is in any position to stop it.

Of course - Self Teching the Alphabet would show me exactly what the tech situation is like on my Continent. But it is so much more fun trying to guess! Besides it is kind of nice and quiet with nobody begging me for free tech.

Here is my Turn Log:

Spoiler :

Turn 136 - Archer in Ulundi
Settler in Nanjing
Turn 137 - Archer in Beijing
Archer in Guangzhou
Turn 138 - Spear in Guangzhou
Turn 139 - Spear in Beijing
Barracks in Xian

Founded Hangzhou:
china139hangzhou.jpg

Turn 140 - Archer in Shanghai

Turn 141 - Apparently Ragnar has a death wish and declares war and wipes out one of my Chariots. I am not sure what units he intends to attack with and expect to win. He should have done this 15 Turns ago.
china141warwithragnar.jpg

Turn 142 - Catapult in Beijing
Courthouse in Guangzhou
Barracks in Chengdu
Turn 144 - Catapult in Beijing
Spearman in Ulundi
Turn 145 - Coloseum in Xian and Nanjing
Turn 146 - Catapult in Beijing
Courthouse in Nanjing
Turn 147 - Catapult in Shanghai
Work Boat in Hangzhou

Shanghai popped a Great Scientist - I will use him to build an Academy in Ulundi.

Chichen Itza was completed in uMgungundlovu:
china147chichenitza.jpg

Turn 148 - Catapult in Beijing, Guangzhou, and CHengdu
Academy in Ulundi
Turn 149 - Worker in Shanghai
Turn 150 - Catapult in Beijing and Guangzhou
Coloseum in Ulundi

Finally Ragnar's Ragtags arrive to attack Beijing - if they make it there:
china150vikinginvasion.jpg

I could not keep the link up but there were 3 Swords, 4 Axes, 2 Spears, and 2 Archers. It cost me 2 Catapults and netted me a Great General and 33/60 towards another one.

It also unlocked the Heroic Epic so I will build it in Beijing. When this is done, I will be able to crank out one catapult per turn! :mischief:

See what happened to him?
china151status.jpg

Turn 151 - Catapult in uMgungundlovu
Turn 152 - Courthouse in Xian

The Parthenon in Shanghai
china152theparthenon.jpg

Turn 153 - Heroic Epic in Beijing :mwaha:
Catapult in Chengdu
Turn 154 - Catapult in Beijing
Granary in Hangzhou
The Great Library in Ulundi - and I forgot a picture. :(

Turn 155 - Catapults in Beijing and Guangzhou
Turn 156 - Catapults in Beijing and uMgungundlovu

Completed the National Epic / Great Library Combination in Ulundi:
ulundi156.jpg

The war against the Vikings has just come to a start in earnest - Here is my attacking Stack:
china156attacking.jpg

Captured Haithabu from the Vikings!
china156haithabu.jpg

That is another stack forming behind city walls. Rather than lose turn bombarding I just used the Catapults to Barrage Attack. Can you spell U-G-L-Y? It cost 5 Catapults and 1 Axeman. There are more where those came from. :mwaha:

Turn 157 - Catapult in Beijing
Turn 159 - Lighthouse in Hangzhou
Forges in uMgungundlovu, Ulundi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xian, and Nanjing
Turn 160 - Forge in Beijing
Catapults in uMgungundlovu, Ulundi, Shanghai, and Guangzhou

I just popped a Great Scientist. Where should I put him? I am thinking about an Academy in Shanghai.
Spoiler :

china160greatscientist.jpg

Here is my war situation with the Vikings:
Spoiler :

china160vikings.jpg

They do not have many turns left. My army will take out Nidaros and keep marching northward then circle back to pick up the reinforcements and pick off the other two towns. Will the Celts research the Alphabet by the time I destroy the Vikings?

Here are the Demographics:
Spoiler :

china160demographics.jpg

It should look better once the war is done.

I did not snap a picture of the Military. I have about 15 Axes and maybe a dozen Catapults and that seems to be enough to bankrupt my economy.

why you're not in hindu? and post a save... this way not much can be judged. But 1000 AD and cats+axes war? interesting

Sorry, where did you get into a war with the Vikings? I may have missed something but all I can see is "built archers" then later "this is how the war is going" ??

^^ The Viking War started Turn 141. I was still building up my Catapults (and Wonders) when Ragnar's stack finally showed up. I will try to organize my presentation a little bit better.

Agreed I should be in Hindu - I guess am not in it because I do not have any religious civics yet and I have not had any Happiness problems. As for Diplomacy - had Brennus asked me to switch I would have done it.

I can post a save since you are requesting it - I was waiting for a time when the war was over. (Attaching 1000AD Save)

Inside the Spoiler is my current game status. I need to sleep before I can give anything in detail.

Spoiler :

1320AD - Been at war since 800AD - Wiping up the Celts with Cho-Ko-Nu. Built 42 - Still have 37. It looks like the Celts have 9 Cities to go.

I really like them - especially with a Protective leader! Since they do Collateral Damage I can neglect Siege and build them exclusively.

Let me know if you want to see a save around that time too or if I should just post After-Action.

you're really behind in techs generally... I am interesting to see what the other continent is doing

could use really more improvements overall.

I am afraid you can be there for a big surprise once an AI gets optics, but since they didn't met you yet... well they probably are not that advanced :-)

^^ Being generally behind in techs is a consequence of not researching the Alphabet and warring a lot. The economy took a very long time to recover and then I had to gear up for Ragnar. I was amazed at how long it took Brennus to get around to researching it and out of curiousity I wanted to see.
Spoiler :
1440AD :lmao:

For a while on the other continent I seriously thought I had Tokugawa and Montezuma and maybe Sitting Bull. They were taking a very long time to get anything going. Now it looks like I have one wonder builder and one religious nut on the other continent. I did not look very carefully at the time elapsed between the early wonders and appropriate Great People to look for Philisophical leaders.

Anyway, I played up to Turn 212 - or 1510AD. Here is my research:

Spoiler :

Turn 164 - Calendar
Turn 169 - Machinery from a very timely Great Engineer Bulb
Turn 170 - Music - and I did get a Great Artist!
Turn 171 - Meditation
Turn 172 - Priesthood
Turn 173 - Monotheism
Turn 175 - Monarchy
Turn 183 - Feudalism
Turn 192 - Guilds
Turn 197 - Civil Service
Turn 201 - Philosophy - Here I was setting up for my post war Civics.
Turn 203 - Theology
Turn 207 - Banking
Turn 209 - Paper

I am currently working on Divine Right - Islam got founded in 1500AD so I am a little bit behind the other Continent but I think I still have a shot at building the Spiral Minaret. I am also making a go at the University of Sankore in Ulundi.

On the other Continent........

Spoiler :

Turn 163 - The Oracle Builder build the Mausolleum of Mausollos.
Turn 166 - Brennus built the Apostolic Palace
Turn 174 - Somebody founded Taoism - so Philosophy has been researched.
Turn 177 - Somebody build Notre Dame - Engineering has been done for a while.
Turn 186 - Brennus built the Church of the Nativity
Turn 187 - Somebody built the Angkor Wat
Turn 191 - Somebody built the Kong Miao and the Hagia Sophia
Turn 200 - Somebody built the Shwendagon Paya
Turn 201 - Somebody build the Sistine Chapel
Turn 210 - Somebody founded Islam

Here were my Great People and what I did:

Spoiler :

Turn 160 - Great Scientist in Ulundi settled in Ulundi - I was specifically refusing to research the Alphabet and therefore could not bulb Philosophy. Given my economy it would not make any sense to build another Academy so this gives me the most Beakers.

Turn 169 - Great Engineer in Ulundi - bulbed Machinery and I could not have asked for better timing!

Turn 170 - Great Artist in Beijing from Music - Will start a Golden Age very shortly!
Turn 178 - Great Scientist in Ulundi - Settles in Ulundi.
Turn 184 - Great Scientist in uMgungundlovu - settles in Ulundi.

Turn 196 - I got a source of Gems now!

Turn 198 - Great Artist in Shanghai - is being saved for another Golden Age
Turn 210 - Great Merchant in Ulundi - I have options!

The war with the Vikings:

Spoiler :

Turn 161 Captured Nidaros
china161nidaros.jpg

Turn 164 Captured Uppsala
china164uppsala.jpg

Turn 169 Captured Bjorgvin
china169bjorgvin.jpg

....and Birka
china169birka.jpg

And that's it for the Vikings!

Turn 168 - Brennus apparently researched Feudalism and Vassaled Ragnar and declares war! So there is no peace for Qin and at this point he has Catapults and Axes and Swords against Longbows!

Spoiler :

My plan is to fortify the northwest and minimize the damage he can do - then make a strike for his Capital lands. Turn 173 - Camulodunum is the first target.
china173camulodunum.jpg

Turn 181 - Captured Tolosa
china181tolosa.jpg

Turn 187 - Captured Bibracte and a whole bunch of prizes!
china187bibracte.jpg

Turn 192 - Vienne
china192vienne.jpg

Turn 195 - Isca and the Church of the Nativity

Turn 209 - Cimmerian

Turn 212 - Nemetocenna
china212nemetocenna.jpg

.......and finally Mauryan
china212mauryan.jpg

......and *this* is what happens to Vassal DOW Backstabbers!

Wow! Look at all the blood!

Lost 29 Catapults - Killed 34
Lost 25 Cho-ko-Nu - Killed 27 Longbows
Lost 12 Axes - Killed 39
Lost 3 Chatiots - Killed 5 Horse Archers
Lost 2 Swordsmen - Killed 11 Swordsmen and 25 Gallic Warriors
Lost 1 Archer - Killed 25
Lost 1 Spear - Killed 10
Lost 1 Warrior and killed 5 (Oops those are Barbarians)
Lost 1 Trireme and killed 10 Galleys (More Barbarians)

Actually I ran a gambit towards the end of the war and stopped building Cho-ko-nu and build some infrastructure. Hindsight says I should just keep building. I also should have researched Horesback Riding to get some Knights. Those would have proven useful against Longbows. (although the Battle of Crecy would say otherwise)

My thinking is the very next turn I use one of my Great Artists to start a Golden age and switch to:
Representation - Bureaucracy - Caste System - Mercantalism - Pacifism (and Hinduism)

I probably should have done this a *very* long time ago.

The Golden Age will help me in my race to get the University of Sankore and the Spiral Minaret - and I have a Great Artist + Great Merchant for another one!

The continent is mine!

with 28 cities I thought that you're in ideal situation for space race with "reasonable" date

so i took it and ended with totally unimpressive 1923 space race finish... ugh.

From what I saw and changed first... DR? Switched already into compass+optics.

Then I started to whip hindu temples, monasteries, forges, CH's everywhere. Everything else was set aside and build wealth and eventually research.

After optics I started towards important stuff. I missed out on TM by few turns :-( and you already lost the lib race, so it had to be done the hard way.

At this point the priorities were set as RP (for better watermills and windmills), then Communism (for SP), then steam power (which was a bit useless due to the city placement though), Factories, Laboratories and the usual stuff.

If I remember right you have enough GP's stocked for 2 consecutive GA's, use them.

of course you should use slavery+OR ;-) and be in hindu.

I seriously thought about pursuing an Isolationist Space Race. I did enough to make a mess of this game and I do not know if an Isolationist game would be interesting or boring.

Up to Turn 246 or 1680AD - and reached a pretty good junction point. I went with a different route.

The first thing I did in Turn 212 after finishing off the Celts was use the Great Artist to pop a Golden Age for some really badly needed Civics changes. I went with:

Representation - This is my choice when I never cottaged up.
Bureaucracy - My capital is not much to write home about but this will do.
Caste System - This is the big upgrade over Slavery.
Mercantalism - Synergizes with Representation nicely and I killed all my potential foreign trade partners.
Pacifism - More Synergy with Specialists and I will not be building units for a while yet.
Hinduism - Had I done this way back when I might not have been jumped by Ragnar...... maybe

The changes did not seem to make much of a difference to my gold expenditure.

Rebuilding the economy is a matter of building Farms, Windmills, and Workshops.

Research seems to be accelerating.

Spoiler :

Turn 214 - Divine Right - I figured I might as well make a run at the Spiral Minaret to make the most of my Hindu Buildings. (What Hindu Buildings?)
Turn 218 - Education - And this is about how far I got in the Liberalism Race.
Turn 220 - Compass
Turn 222 - Nationalism
Turn 224 - Economics - No Great Merchant. :(
Turn 225 - Engineering
Turn 226 - Optics
Turn 227 - The Alphabet
Turn 230 - Printing Press
Turn 232 - Replacable Parts
Turn 234 - Constitution
Turn 237 - Democracy
Turn 239 - Corporation
Turn 242 - Astronomy
Turn 243 - Gunpowder
Turn 245 - Chemistry

Currently researching Steam Power.

Meanwhile......

Spoiler :

Turn 213 - Our Wonderspammer on the other Continent built the University of Sankore, beating Ulundi by a mere couple of turns.

Turn 218 - Somebody won the race to Liberalism.
china218liberalism.jpg

But I did snag the Sprial Minaret in Beijing
china218spiralminaret.jpg

Turn 220 - I popped a Great Engineer in Beijing and saved him for a few turns or so and decided he should help with the Statue of Liberty. Somebody bonk me for not using him for the Taj Mahal.

Turn 226 - The Wonderspammer built the Taj Mahal. Somebody :deadhorse: me for not using the Great Engineer!

Turn 228 - Great Scientist in Ulundi - and joined the city. This is probably the last one because I am running out of turns in the game and there is even more benefit for bulbing. I just did not want to bulb the Scientific Method.

Turn 229 - Somebody built Versailles - Well the whole point of building Versailles is for another Civ to capture it, right? On the other Continent is about the perfect place for it.

Turn 233 - Encountered the Silly Man who Built all his Wonders in his Capital City!
china233suleiman.jpg

Turn 234 - Encountered Joao of Portugal
china234joao.jpg

I also encountered Tokogawa of Japan but forgot to take a picture.

It looks like Silly Man has 11 Cities and is teching like a Mad Man.
Joao has 13 cities and Tokogawa has 9 Cities.

Turn 235 - I built Oxford in Ulundi.

Turn 242 - The Statue of Liberty in Beijing
china242statueofliberty.jpg

And I popped another Great Scientist in Ulundi and discovered the world is Cylindrical.

Turn 245 - Tokogawa capitulated to Joao.

Turn 246 - Great Prophet in Bibracte

So here I am at 1680AD. Silly Man and I are racing ahead in techs - and he finally decided to adopt Emancipation and therefore I am at a major junction point.

I have a Great Artist and a Great Prophet and I can start a Golden Age and make some Civics Adjustments.

1. Stay with Representation or switch to Police State?
2. Stay with Bureaucracy or switch to Vassalage?
3. Adopt Emancipation - I know I dealt with worse unhappiness (Like 9 War Anger)
4. Stick with Mercantalism - Everybody is doing it!
5. Stay with Pacificism or switch to Theocracy?

Switching to Emancipation will slow down my Workshops a little bit - making them equivalent to mines until Railroad comes along. The other decisions will basically decide whether I really am going to race for Space - or just go for that 15% of land that I need for Domination.

With 28 Cities either way should be good, but for the Domination win all I really need is Steel and Rifling and I can build a bunch of Frigates, Galleons, and Cannons....... and maybe go straight for Instanbul first!

Regarding Liberalism - It was not teching the Alphabet that cost me that race. Had I just gone ahead and teched it, the Great Scientists would have bulbed Philisophy and Education.

Sorry about the Taj Mahal - There was really no excuse for that. Well all this makes for a more challenging finish..... maybe.

What input I get for this last decision I have to make though will determine which victory plan I will execute.

This is going to be a triple post - Lost of images.....

Turn 246 - I started a Golden Age and simply switched to Emancipation. I figured I could make my final switches at the end.

Turn 248 - Steam Power - and a buncha Coal

Turn 250 - Steel

......and Joao makes an outrageous demand:

Spoiler :

china250bringito.jpg

Haha! He has no idea what is coming!

Turn 252 - Rifling

Turn 253 - Final Civics Change...... I just adopted Theocracy so that I can build units with 5EXP and I was thinking about keeping my research going.
Hindsight says I should have changed to Nationalism and Police State. I never realized just how bad War  can get!

Turn 255 - Assembly Line - and Silly Man wins a Great Scientist from Physics.
Turn 258 - Silly Man builds the Kremlin.
Turn 259 - Railroad
Turn 260 - Great Scientist in Ulundi (saved for a couple of turns to make a Bulb)
Turn 261 - Scientific Method
Turn 262 - Silly Man builds the Temple of Solemon...... and I had enough of him!

Spoiler :

There is my invasion force!
china263dowsilly.jpg

Hindsight says I should have invaded with much more Infantry and much less Artillery. I was slow for a while.

Turn 264 - Combustion - and I waste no time getting my Oil!

....and here is what happen to Silly Man who built so many Wonders in one city:

Spoiler :

china264instanbul.jpg

Look at all these prizes!
instanbul264prizes.jpg

I took some time to clean up the nearby Seas.

china273tokyo.jpg

Turn 275 - Drama  I really needed those Pavilions!
The Japanese recaptured Tokyo - but I got it back along with a couple more.

Spoiler :

china281domination.jpg

And the score - 123333
china281score.jpg

I did not do a final body count.

All my research - and the fact that I lost the Liberalism Race and the Taj Mahal was pointing me in the direction of a take over the other Continent Domination Finish instead of a Space Race.

Thanks! I am planning to play Churchill next - exploring the Protective leaders.

Protective I understand is a very unpopular trait - and understandably so because:

1. It provides no Economic benefit. Cheaper Castles provide an extra trade route if that counts - but I think that may be a side show.
2. The Military benefits do not show up until the mid game. Protective Archers are only a help against Barbarians I would imagine. However I can imagine fighting a Catapult / Crossbow war - So you basically have to wait for Machinery before you can start to benefit from Protective.
3. There is no help from the Protective trait for any early game strategy. You are dependent on the other Civilization Traits and Characteristics.
4. Economy is better than Military.

(Disclaimer: Just an opinion from somebody who finished his first Monarch game and is climbing the ladder!)

It does provide Drill 1 and City Garrison 1 and the Drill 1 opens up a level of traits so you can pick up specialization bonuses (such as Shock and Cover) out of a Barracks. With 5 Experience you have access to Formation.

So the Protective trait is going to hinge on synergy with the other trait and the civilization characteristics such as Unique Unit, Unique Building, and Starting Technologies.

.......

I am thinking about changing up the map script for a little bit of variety. Archipalego would be a bit cheezy because I hear the AI does not know how to play on it. On the other hand, I might leave the map settings alone until I play another game at the same level.

well I think AbsoluteZero did in one of his YT playthroughs something interesting with Protective trait...

he GS'ed Machinery very early to run with prot crossbows against mostly archers ;-)

Well done! If that was your first Monarch game, then, well... I'm impressed.
I'm playing at Monarch at the moment, and not nearly as good as you do. Although I win 100 % of the time (easy to say that if you have only played 2 games, right? :p), it's a bit of a struggle sometimes.
I'm sure you can take Emperor on, and climb even higher :).

Thanks! The Forum has been very helpful.

If I can figure out how to link a post, I can show my very first actually completed game on the Forum, late in 2009. (Serious necro!)

Inca Game at Noble

I followed up with a Shaka game:
Shaka Game at Noble

I moved up to a Prince Level game with Sitting Bull:
Sitting Bull Game at Prince

Then I started an Egypt Monarch game but could not finish because I was moving.
Egypt Game at Monarch but Never Finished

I was gone (without a computer) for about a year - then broke down and got a laptop and have been playing from January of 2010. I played some Nobles Club games but did not finish - and some Earth games.

This is the second of my more recent games. I am sure the thread necro from the other games would indicate a good bit of change.

EDIT: Fixed a Link.
