Questions about The BUG Mod

No saved games as I've deleted the ones with the problem - which has now happened earlier, in a different game. All the "buildings" icons disappeared (but not those for units, research, wealth and culture), from both the city screens and the popup list of what to do next: an utter game-breaker. I was not building a Wonder, there was no report of a rival having built one, and WB revealed that no rivals were building any Wonders: not at all the same as when losing a Wonder race, which only affects one city
I reckon something has got seriously corrupted, so shall do a complete delete and reinstall, this time with the latest BUG. Then it's back to giving the AIs several good trouncings.
 
I only meant that the message you received saying you could no longer work on a building sounded like the same thing as happens when wonders. I don't think these are caused by the same thing. This does sound like your DLL got corrupted. I don't change the functions that tell the game whether or not you can build a building in either BULL or BUG (that would be anti-UG).

Please let us know how the reinstall goes.
 
Did I miss a FAQ somewhere that you can't turn on BAT2.0 to a previous vanilla (unmodded) game?

I installed Singleplayer (.exe) of BUG4.1 tonite and it works great with my current vanilla saves. But I cannot get BAT to add to my save game to continue playing with BUG/BAT.

Every time I try to install BAT 2.0 (and upgraded with BUG 4.1 assets per above) and run my vanilla/BUG4.1 save, CIV errors out saying the game didn't have a mod before and reloads it back to vanilla.

So BAT must be run only on a new start?

Thanks for any enlightenment, and I did try to search the FAQ/FORUMS here and the wiki and must have missed it if it was posted.

That's correct. Each saved game has the name of the mod that was used to create it embedded inside. You need to start new games using BAT. If you want to play an existing BAT game without BAT you can remove BAT's Assets folder. You'll still have the BAT Mod loaded, but it will be empty. You can't go the other way, however.
 
Thanks, I started reading from the very first post and finally came across Alerum's #123 and was going to edit to say I found my answer.

So I'll just finish the game I'm on with BUG and then install BAT for all my new ones.

Anyways, thanks for all the team's work on these mods. Can't wait to start a new game.
 
Due to popularity of BUG we ran in some sort of compatability problems in cookbooks. Ofcourse most people simply have it in Custom assets folder and have no problems, but for example...

I have BUFFY in my Mods folder with it set as default in the .ini file

his save loads fine for me, but as far a si know Buffy changes some gameplay affecting files, if this save would be loaded by guys with no mod or just BUG [in custom assets] will it cause gameplay problems?

Additionaly is there a reasonable way [sans converting everything into WB saves] to load save made with BUG isntallment in mod folder for a guy who has BUG in custom assets.

Sorry for stupid questions and in case they are misplaced.
 
Alerum had mentioned in a thread a while back that there would a couple of different options with installing BULL, once it's released as a standalone.

I love it, and I can't wait to play with it and some of my favorite mods. (No pressure boys. I'm patient. :))

Is there any plan to have it install in Custom Assets, as BUG does? Will it link with, or tie to BUG? Or will it be strictly a separate, loadable mod?

Alerum had mentioned that he wanted our input, so my vote would be for a CA install, like BUG is now.
 
Lemon, a custom dll cannot be installed to CustomAssets so that won't be an option I'm afraid.

If BULL is taken to mean just the DLL, then technically it should be possible to use without BUG, but I'd say it'd be simplest to just make BULL a DLL addition to BUG. I don't know that anyone would want to use the BULL dll without BUG anyway.
 
Thanks PoM. I'm not too clear on how the dll's are done with regard to Civ, so I wasn't sure about that.

You're right, though. I can't see anyone wanting to play with just BULL and no BUG. In fact, I can't see why anyone would play without BUG to begin with. Well, I'm sure that there is someone out there, but I have a hospital chock full of resources to help them. ;)
 
@Soirana - a game started with a mod loaded (ie BUFFY) cannot be played by others without loading that mod too. If 'locked modified assets' is checked, then both people must have exactly the same mod (all the files exactly the same). If 'locked modified assets' is not checked, then you can fool Civ by playing a mod with the same name but a totally empty directory (or different files). Also, with 'locked modified assets' is not checked, you have the option of getting Civ to load the files from the CustomAssets folder (ie maybe BUG?).

To do what you are asking, you will need to use the WB Save to Start Scenario work around.

@Lemon Merchant - what PoM says is correct. The only way to get BULL to play with a CustomAssets version of BUG is to swap out the DLL in the 'my progs' directory. That is a scary move as you don't want to lose access to the 'correct' DLL for playing MP games.
 
One of the sub-screens under Info Screen shows the top five cities and the Wonders. The latter now appear as a list only: time was that one got a picture of the latest Wonder and an associated list using a neutral colour.
I have a problem with the new version: the list background is of alternating bars of dull blue and dark blue, against which the text is in the colour of the owning civ. OK so far, but I was playing as Rome and two of my opponents were Byzantium and Sumeria, with the result that the list was close to unreadable: doubtless other "blue" civs would similarly be difficult to read. And there does not appear to be an option to use a single "neutral" colour for this text.
Can anything be done about this ?

As long as the game wasn't started using the Lock Modified Assets option you can create an empty mod folder "Mods/BUG Mod 4.1" (or whatever version of BUG was used) with an empty Assets folder inside.

BUFFY has gameplay changes and is not saved-game compatible, so this trick won't work for BUFFY saves.

The initial release will be just a ZIP that you will unzip either into the BUG Mod folder or as a new mod. You will be free to copy the DLL to the main BTS Assets folder if you want--make a backup of your DLL first!

The DLL cannot be placed in CustomAssets; it will be ignored unfortunately.

I suppose if you were using a mod that had Python changes that conflicted with BUG but didn't have it's own DLL, you could benefit from BULL. For example, if you don't want to merge Next War you can still use BULL with it to get the better city hover display and pre-chop behavior.

If you use BUG and BULL together, you can configure BULL at runtime from the BUG Options screen instead of mucking about in the GlobalDefinesAlt.xml file.

I will look into changing the background color, but I think better would be an option to disable the player colors entirely.

Use Notepad++ or some other text editor (Notepad may work too but be careful) to edit [Custom]Assets/Python/Screens/CvInfoScreen.py. The first change will be easy to make but may not work. Change two lines (2490 and 2526) from

Try it out. If it doesn't work, you must also change 7 lines starting at 2499. Each requires the same change (removing some text).

I have a question about using BUG in PBEM games. Note: I'm using BUG 4.1 on a Mac. I've installed it via CustomAssets rather than as a mod. It works great in SP games.

The host of the pbem game sent me a test. I'm told it was created w/o any mods. I can open it okay when I uninstall BUG, but with BUG installed, I get this message on the screen "BugInit - init() already running", and no interface. (But I could play out a turn, I just don't see any of the interface elements.)

Should this work, or am I doing something unsupported/wrong? I don't really care if I can't use BUG for the pbem game, but I'd like to use it for my SP games at least. What's the easiest way to configure things? If you need more info, I can post logging info.

Please post your PythonErr.log and PythonDbg.log. You need to enable logging in CivilizationIV.ini (at least on the PC version). How are you loading the saved game he sent you? Are you using the MAIN MENU or double-clicking the save in the Finder?
 
@dr_s - a pbem game is just like any other multi-player game. You can only play using BUG if everyone plays using BUG (and the same version too). A pbem game automatically has 'locked modified assets' checked and should not load any of your customassets BUG when you load the save.

I'm surprised it threw an error with BUG installed - are you sure it was a pbem game and not a normal Single Player game?
 
I'm loading the game through the main menu, Multiplayer->PBEM->Load Game. (In response to ruff_hi, yes, it's pbem, it prompts me for a password then automatically saves itself when I finish my turn.)

I installed BUG in CustomAssets using the instructions here so that I could easily open SP games posted to the strategy forums, and that works.

that is really weird. I often have BUG installed under customassets while playing pbem turns. Something is up here. Can you send me the save (ruff.hi at gmail dot com) and the associated password?
 
I sent it along. It should prompt you for a password. I suspect it will work on your machine, and the problem is something about Civ on the Mac, or BUG on the Mac, or the way I've installed BUG.
