Hi, I have been playing Civ3 off and on for about a couple years, not a serious player. Got it in a bundle of free games a friend's dad was giving away.

Anyway, while I was playing today i noticed that something happened that had never happened before. Make that something DIDN'T happen.

At no point did I get a Palace upgrade. Oddly enough, this was one of the best games I had played, ranked #1 throughout the game, Modern Age while others were struggling in Middle Ages.

So my questions are:

  1. What are the conditions to get the upgrades?
  2. Possibly answered above, but why did I not get any in this game?

I have searched several sites for information, even CivFanatics, but only mention I get is "Throne room has been replace by Palace Screen" and a screen shot of the Palace Screen.

In single-player scenarios (not the random map games at the start menu) sometimes you will never get the option to either upgrade your palace OR view your city with the eye in the top left corner of the city screen. I don't know what triggers this, but I've just noticed it.:dunno:
 
Any modification of the game eliminate palace upgrades, and I think the city view. I know the palace upgrades are missing on the GOTMs, which are usually modified.
 
I think Firaxis modifying the game isn't the same as us lowly mortals doing it. Besides, the palace upgrade and the city view are kind of lame, anyway.

Agreed that they are lame, but also agree that I enjoy them (woohoo for riding the fence!). So are there no known triggers for palace upgrade?

I was playing today and had several in a row...and I was doing worse today lol.
 
win first fight vs barbarian, Win first city defense, Build Second town, etc. trigger it, I am pretty sure somewhere was a list or post with these things.
 
I'm pretty sure Northern Wolf's got it and I know there is a list around somewhere.

These might be triggers, but they aren't guarantees. I've gone plenty of games with these happening & no palace until the middle ages, or industrial even--and then get 5 or 6 upgrades at once, like as not. Or only one; there doesn't seem to be a pattern.

I'm also pretty sure these triggers work every time, unless you are playing a modified version of Civilization III.

If you play modification, you are not allowed to see neither "city view" nor "palace view" AFAIK. (Manually replacing graphics or units does not count as "modification")

Well, my C3C is as unmodded as you can get. These triggers still don't guarantee an upgrade--and I can see my palace & city view just fine. In particular, first barbarian win or second town I don't think have *ever* given me an upgrade. It may be that this is the way the code is supposed to work, but there's a bug in it, or at least I assume it's a bug when you get 5-6 palace upgrades at once without ever having had any the whole game. Heck, once I think I got all but one upgrade at the same time--and you know darned well that was a *long* time after building the second city. I'm not the only one to experience this; I've seen this topic before & others commented that they also got upgrades in bunches from time to time.

Edit: 300 posts, I see, & just before 10 days of vacation/travel/training. Woo-hoo!

Palace expansion and what triggers it thread.

My people never give me palace upgrade thread.

Basically:
It is random or broken
I was mistaken about "it works every time".
People do not know what triggers palace upgrade, or why does the same thing not always trigger palace upgrade.

I have palace upgrade "turned off" so I am not good answerer to that question.
 
Great Library question...was it "fixed" in C3C? I recently took over the GL city and received Theo, Engineering, Invent, Gunpowder and Education but I did not get Music Theory despite the fact two tribes knew it. It was my understanding that you could get lots of free techs beyond Education, but that didn't happen in my case. There's a GL ladder thread somewhere that quotes some crazy number of free techs, but it could be an old vanilla or PTW thread. I couldn't find it.
 
You should be able to get techs beyond Education from the GLib in C3C. But IIRC Music Theory is some sort of oddity that you somehow don't get from a GLib elevator.
 
How it is possible to reach conquest victory?(The one in which you have to eliminate all players?) Even if you have all opponent cities capture but 1, there should be domniation victory already, since you own more then 66% of world territory...:o
 
@SleeperLv: You probably own more than 66% of the World Population at that point.....But NOT World Territory.

(Viz. Number of Tiles within your borders has to be > 66% of the World's Total Controllable Tiles. [WTCT=World's Total Land + Coast Tiles]) :)
