I think the XOTM competitions more competitive, because map conditions can really change the game. Having/not having a few rivers for a diplo./space. game can surely affect finish date significantly. Having low shield output in the core almost surely implies a slower conquest or domination game. And a high domination limit implies a higher score histographic game in a slew of cases.

I do like the competitive aspect of XOTM games. That said... I usually prefer HoF games, because the XOTM maps tend to have starts and core areas that feel a little bit "ugly" to me. Of course that's a challenge, but halfway in the game, things just don't feel right to me. That, and I don't like barbarians. We really ought to play a suped up XOTM game sometime... like we had an HoF game start with 4 rivers and 4 cows nearby. Maybe even throw in an SGL from the start too for the fun of it (not that all HoF games have an early SGL... but almost all of them... at least it seems so for the top spots... have a suped up start).

Some of the HoF spots have games that have stood the Test of Time, perhaps... but others can definitely use plenty of improvement. I recently submitted a much faster SS game for demi-god level, and in the last couple months, I've chopped off quite a few years off of some of the Deity 20k tables. More tables exist that can use much improvement (the gauntlets usually aim at these tables, or so it seems)... especially for Huge maps.

I'm certain this has been asked before but can't seem to find it!

How do I know which version I am playing and whether or not it is patched?

I have PTW and on the front screen in the bottom left it says "1.01f" this is the version number right? I keep reading about version 1.29 patch but can't seem to find it anywhere, I have checked the download page but they all the patches say "Don't use with EU versions" (I am in the UK)

Any help welcome!

Welcome to CFC, kugenin!

That 1.01f you're seeing in the bottom left is the version number. IIRC, the latest version for PTW was 1.27, but I don't recall if there were any letters after that.

I'd never really looked at the patches in the downloads section, but I find it very strange that the Spanish, French, German, Italian and UK versions all say that they will not work with European versions of the game. I wish I could be more help in finding the proper patch for you, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable about the patches than I will come along with more information.

Have you tried downloading the UK version and installing it? I'm not sure what difference (if any) there is between the versions. It might just be a typo (copy and paste or something) and work regardless.

I'd give it a shot, anyway. Make a backup first, in case it screws anything up, but hopefully it shouldn't. :)

Hmm what is that Hall Of Fame that you talk about and that is reason to play civ? Is it a civfanatics project?

And btw - can i see other people games somewhere on this site? Or something like replays?(like in starcraft, after game you save a replay to analyse what you did right and what wrong later or show your game to others) Something i can learn from and maybe get some kind of "show"(like a fun thing to do - watch other people games)?

The Hall of Fame is a competition where people play their best and then submit their games to be scored, so they can compare games and compete for the best possible score. The forum for that is here.

I can't remember if the HoF (Hall of Fame) has games available to look at for replay value. I do know that people often post .sav files for others to analyze in the strategy forum.

Why do we play civ could be a very long answer or short....short answers, to win, have fun, to get a better score.

I remember one well played game that you can actually watch as a recording that a guy played with the Aztecs in PTW. Search for Jaguar Warrior or something to that effect. I've got it saved somewhere but I guess I didn't get it bookmarked.

It is called Homage to the Jag warrior. It was a PTW deity rush. A lot easier in C3 and PTW than C3C. It was played on a tiny map as I recall.

You can take a look at a limited replay of any game using CRpViewer.........quite useful if you want to compare your efforts to the competition. :)

The absolute best "replay" I know of is the Succession Game forum. You can "watch" as others play a game, and comment on their play, and ask questions, and generally learn by observing. You can also read the older games that have been completed (or abandoned) and gain insight on why the 'best' players do and say certain things.

Of course, there is no "replay" in Civ3 in the true sense of the word....

Why is it that you have a palace option when it could've also worked on civ 4? and
Why is it that when the game is over because you win or resign and lose, the leaderhead is shown as a person in pain while the others laugh?

What's the effect of craters (ie when you bombard and damage a tile)?
Can explorers capture workers? Can artillery (not that I'd ever use it that way)? Can you take an undefended enemy city with non-ground units or ground units wihout attack value?

Not sure...I think it acts like a non-roaded square and eats a movement point. I don't think there's much defensive value to it either. But I don't know....

No, no and no. You need an attack value to capture.

Thanks Turner- regarding the crater tile, is it usable by the city for working or is it in effect polluted till workers can fix it up?
