Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I did ask this question on an Emancipation-thread, but i think the thread was left to die...

I do have a problem I hope some of you could help me sort out!? Emancipation - how much unhappiness does it inflict, and how do I work out in wich degree it will hit my different cities, and more importently my opponents?

I believe that if you aren't using the emancipation civic and n other civilizations that you know are using the civic, then you'll get n unhappiness in each of your cities. It works exactly the same for AI civilizations who aren't using this civic.

This means that big cities will be hurt by it the most as they are usually already about to become unhappy (balance in happy and unhappy faces). It also means that the effect of the civic is much greater on large maps with many opponents because more opponents can use the civic while you don't.

Recently I started to play Civ 4! Aleluia!!!
I noticed in one of my russians city's this:
I had 74% Russians, 25% as from Egypt. what happened to the others 1%?
Well, I see the color of Persia (one of my neighbors), but it wasn't list it!!!

Clearly a rounding issue. It could in reality be 74.3% Russia, 25.4% Egypt, 0.3% Persia and rounding to the nearest integer would lead to the above result. If they use rounding down, then even a situation of 74.4% Russia, 25.6% Egypt would lead to the above result. I don't know which rounding method the game uses, but this is a rounding issue.

Yeah, there's certainly some odd rounding that goes on sometimes. I've had cities which have a total of 97% of their citizens sometimes. :crazyeye:

How do you change the number of players on a Map?

I have downloaded a map that has 18 players. I like the Map but I would like to play the map with less opponets.

Is there a way you can play with a custom map such as this and select the players like in civ III?

Thank you

1) What does it mean that a building becomes obsolete: simply that I can no longer build those buildings, or also that those I have already built stop producing their effects?

2) Why do my obelysks produce 2 culture points per turn, when the help advisor says that they produce just 1 point?
Is it like in Civ III that 'old' buildings produce more culture?

Ok, thanks.
Does this meen that i get a (1) unhappy face in all my cities, for each civilization which runs emancipation?

I guess I must seem rather stupid by now, but thats life.

1) Both. You can no longer build obsolete buildings, and the special effects from the existing ones no longer apply. (Though they'll still keep their cultural value - for example, when Monasteries become obsolete you'll no longer get their science benefit but the culture will still be produced.)

2) Yes, exactly. Buildings 1000 years old or more produce double culture per turn points. :)

Your question seems to be answered in the creation and customization thread that you've also started about this subject. The creation and customization subforum is also the best place to get answers to these kinds of questions.

Welcome to civfanatics by the way. [party]

Nah, you just wanted to make sure that you understood my post correctly.

I just wanted to add that the monastery is the only exception to this general rule (can't build it anymore, all effects but culture dissapear). A monastery still allows you to build missionaries after it has become obsolete.

Ah yes, of course. A useful little effect, as well. Kind of encourages you to get those monasteries before Scientific Method, especially if you're not planning on doing Organised Religion for most of the rest of the game.

When starting a revolution to change govt. styles, is it possible to go back to an old form of govt.? I haven't tried it yet, but I was curious if it would work.

Also, I'm having trouble finding my 'quick saves'. If I use the 'quick save' key, where are those 'saves' saved? I see my saves from when I go into the menu and click on save, then create a save file. It saves them in 'My documents folder'. I also cannot find the autosaves. I see every once and awhile during a game it reads "autosaving". But where are those 'saves'? And how do I turn off 'autosave', since I cannot find them anyway?

thanks for the help.

You can always change to any civic you have access to. However, you have to wait until the period of anarchy is over. And even if you're Spiritual, I believe one of the patches added a few turns of waiting time before you can switch civics again.

One of my most common switches, for example, is from Organized Religion and Bureaucracy to Theocracy and Vassalage in order to build a military with high XPs, then switch back once the units are complete. During a modern era war, I have switched from Universal Suffrage and Free Speech to Police State and Nationhood if war weariness gets really bad.

There should be a few subfolders of the folder where the 'normal' savegames are stored. One of them is single and it contains two subfolders called auto and quick for the autosaves and the quicksaves respectively.

If you want, I could help you configure the regularity and amount of autosaves that you want to have the game create for you. It's not that difficult, but maybe you're satisfied with the 1 in 4 turns autosave feature with a maximum of 5 autosaves.

With 1.61 (and Warlords), you have to wait 5 turns after the end of anarchy before making another civics switch. Spiritual leaders, having no anarchy, simply have to wait 5 turns.

In prior versions, everyone had to wait 5 turns, regardless of anarchy, which allows non-Spiritual leaders to be in perpetual anarchy (by making a civics switch taking at least 5 turns of anarchy, then doing it again, etc.). This was considered an exploit, because it allowed the civ to run massive deficits with no cash in the bank, and still not have to disband any units.

Can someone explain me a little about the Nationality bar in my cities?
Does it produce war unhappiness if I'm in war with that nation?
Does it lower my culture production?
Does it mean that my city may flip to another culture?
What makes it have more foreign citizens and what makes it have less?
Thanks in advance :D

p.s. answer me and 'me love you long time'

It's cultural influence from another empire. If you took the city in a war, it will never flip back <i> to the original owner </i>, but there will be unhappiness because they "want to return to the motherland" until the original civ is completely wiped out. The city will also have 0 of your culture when you capture it, and all cultural buildings will be destroyed, so you have to worry about it flipping to a third party. To change the city's disposition, produce more of your culture in the city and neighboring cities, and capture/destroy nearby cities from the same victim.

Your post-script nearly scared me out of answering, but I'm a brave man. ;)

The nationality bar reflects how much foreign versus domestic culture and population is in the city.

Yes, it will produce additional unhappiness, even without war--the "We long to rejoin our homeland!" penalty.

To my knowledge, no, it does not lessen the production of culture from buildings and other sources.

Yes, it increases the chances the city will flip, especially if it's short of food an contains few military units.

Two things, that I know of, will increase your civ's culture in that city: time and new cultural buildings.

I have looked around here and am new to the forums.
Recently got Civ4 after having had the other 3 previous ones.
Once I found this forum, I found there was a patch. I had no problems before the patch. Now, my wonder movies stutter or begin music stuttering with blue screen. It takes time to move beyond it without ever seeing the movie. (this only happened after patch)
I tried the .ini fix here. It worked until Taj Mahal in 1879AD and now it is back. I looked and my .ini files kept reverting to the "0" setting. I keep resetting it and it worked the first couple times. Now, I am back to the problem with the movie again even with the fix.
**Should I do the low res movies? (everything else has been fine until this moment) Once I download the movies (if I do), what do I do next? I am not that savvy with how to do these things unfortunately so pardon me if these questions are stupid to those of you much more skilled.
thanks...
Anthony

The long-awaited patch for Civ4 (v1.61) has finally been released. The patch includes a variety of changes, fixes, and additions such as new map scripts, scenarios, and unit changes. The patch is 45.7 MB and can be downloaded either through the Game's main menu screen (Advanced > Check for Updates), or by going to Civ4's official site download page.

The Civ4 SDK and PitBoss are also released. The SDK contains the core game DLL source code (including all the AI and game code), allowing gamers to completely rewrite or modify literally everything about the game they want! This opens up a whole new world of modding and it's possible to make a completely different game loosely based on Civilization using the SDK.

The PitBoss application is the the persistent turn-based server program for Civilization IV and a beta version was released back in January.

DOWNLOAD LINKS:

Download the v1.61 Patch (45.7 MB) from: 2K Games | Firaxis | 3D Downloads | 3D Gamers | FileFront | WorthPlaying | VGPRO
Download the SDK (6 MB) from: 2K Games | CivFanatics | Firaxis | 3D Downloads
Download PitBoss Application (3.56 MB) from: 2K Games | CivFanatics | Firaxis | 3D Downloads

For people who have trouble playing the in-game Civilization IV movies, Firaxis has released low resolution versions of all the movies for download on Firaxis website. Before downloading these movies, you should try the v1.61 patch first to see if it takes care of the problem. If not, try the following:
Open the config (ini) file in notepad, and find the line which reads HideMovieBackground = 0, set it to HideMovieBackground = 1
The intro and victory movies expand to fill the screen, so play the game at lower resolutions (like 1024x768) to get the best performance.
If that doesn't help, you can download the low-res movies in three separate files:

Download Low-Res Movies - Intro (68.09 MB) from: 2K Games | Firaxis | 3D Downloads
Download Low-Res Movies - Victory (40.19 MB) from: 2K Games | Firaxis | 3D Downloads
Download Low-Res Movies - Wonders (271.04 MB) from: 2K Games | Firaxis | 3D Downloads

KingAnthony_I, I had a similar problem, though only with the opening movie, until I made the following change to CivilizationIV.ini:

; Show movies using hi-color, not true-color (may be faster)
Bink16Bit = 1

Have you given that a shot?

Ben E Gas, your quick saves should be in the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\your_ID\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Saves\single\quick
