But don't the AI ever attack you? Wouldn't you worry about that? Without bombers, fighters, gunships, tanks and modern armour, you're not going to get very far in a modern war, and even a marginally competent AI will give you a seriously hard time.

no!
If you have enough cities, it's very very unlikely that you get attacked even with low power.
And the AIs don't check your units really, only the power graph. So infantry + battleships + subs is more than you need to defend yourself.

edit : and spies to see it coming!

I still disagree strongly. Oil is my water. :)

2 things:
- I never had an oil shortage (although I often didn't build and connect the well for a long time : railroads > oil wells for me:mischief: so my workers have a lot to do before the wells)
- I never got invaded in the late game. And I mean NEVER. The latest i had to face an invasion was in the age of rifles and frigates.

But if you're doing the invading, then those bombers and tanks help a lot, no? ;)

yes
but I tend to favour an earlier world war :)
galleons and frigates and cannons don't require oil

If you conquer other nations early on, it's hard to imagine you not having oil when it appears.

Thanks for the replies on the lack of iron. I've continued on successfully, no mass AI attacks with swordsmen, the Romans attacked me earlier but I took back my city and they made peace - I'm surprised they haven't come back at me since I hemmed them in and they only have 3 cities.
My "best" ally Egypt has 2 iron but won't trade even though I joined her when the Aztecs attacked. I'm watching an Egyptian city next to an iron mine that I hope the Aztecs sack so I can liberate that area.
The Egyptians justed sacked an Aztec city next to marble that I'm planning to settle - kind of exposed, but I think a great artist in the city will help protect and grow it.
Biggest frustration is the AI building wonders that I am close to finishing. I finally completed my first wonder, Notre Dame, after several failed attempts earlier.
I expected more warfare with aggressive AI turned on, maybe the huge map delayed war IOT settle first. Raging barbarians were a nuisance early, but no barbarian cities showed up (at least none around me), and the barbs are not so bad now with culture expanded.

I like CIV IV more than CIV III, but kind of a cop out to make all religions equal - would be nice to see some variations and different abilities there.

Hi! I played (extensively) CIV 1 through III. But since a couple of years I have not played CIV. Now I wanna devote a little bit time to this game again and I’ve got a few questions about that, so thanks for your help folks.

The first issue, is my notebook able to deal with CIV4. I’m a grad-student from Germany, so I travel a lot, and thus my ‘old’ notebook is most convenient therefore. But I’m not sure if the specs of it are capable to deal with CIV4. Since I dunno more about computers then to use Word and PowerPoint;…HELP! How can look up if my computer fullfills the min spec requirements?

Also, I want to play CIV4, mostly, in the multiplayer mode. But now I’m a it confused about multiplayer v teamplayer. What’s the idea behind that?

Is CIV4 and Warlords the same deal like CIV and Play the World?

And the last question I have is, what CIV4 shall I buy? I looked at Amazon, and they have the CIV4, and something called “Sid Meier's Civilization IV Special Edition”, what’s that all about?

Thanks for your help!

Very unlikely. I bought a new, souped up laptop right when Civ4 came out in Nov 2005 and it barely meets the standards. I doubt many old notebooks can run it.

Yes, it's an expansion like PTW and Conquests, but not as crappy as PTW.

It's just a fancier box and some extra glossy paperwork, like a keyboard layout with all the hotkeys and a tech tree. Slightly cool but not worth paying extra for if it costs more. It was released in Nov 2005 and does not include Warlords.

Thanks indeed for the infos; yeah, I thought that my notebook is not fit for it.
But, I was browsing the internet for CIV4 to purchase it, and on ebay it is available, at a rather decent price; yet with the following remark:

This PC game is BRAND NEW and has never been played! The disc and manual are in PERFECT CONDITION! The original packaging is NOT INCLUDED. Disc is placed in a lined plastic sleeve and shipped in a protective mailer along with the manual.

Does anyone know what they mean with original packaging, and is it important, since disc and manual are included, what else could there be important?

Sounds like it just doesn't come with the regular box. If they're telling the truth about the game (and manual) being in perfect condition and you don't have some weird compulsion to own the original box, it shouldn't be a problem. But I don't know much about EBay.

The culture value of a building doubles after 1000 years.

noob alert
how come stonehenge gives 16 culture while description is 8?

Buildings which produce culture double their culture generation after they have existed 1000 years. This is undocumented, so you're not a noob. I've seen this question many times.

edit: Ooh, beaten by 2 minutes.

merci! maybe not a noobQ but i am one allright :)

I have the HoF mod installed and put the modname in civIV.ini file (specify a Mod folder) so it starts up automaticaly. And I've set NoIntroMovie = 0.
But the intro is skipped anyway, something to do with the mod?
