Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I have recently bought Civ4 and Warlords... the latter has the newest patch built-in and I have the patch for the basic gqme too. Installing was no problem but neither game will load and run. A few seconds after clicking on the shortcut, the game crashes the computer and it re-boots. My system is well up to requirements. Can anyone help please?

If the computer normally works fine, I would say you have a heat or power issue. Games don't cause a computer to reboot, it's doing that because the game is stressing the system more than most applications. Something in your system isn't stressing too well. Be sure your fans are all working, and your CPU heatsink is making good contact and is functioning. Do you have monitoring software for your motherboard? Have a look at the temps.

It DOES add to each side.

Not it doesn't. Just go into the world builder and add a spearman for you and a horsebowman for your opponent. When you alt mouseover the opponents unit, then it will say 4 vs 3, not 8 vs 6. And if you attack and look in the combat log afterwards, then it will say the same

The best place to look for technical support is in the Technical Support section of this forum. I hope they can help you.

My guess (as a mathematician) is that they did this to make all percentage bonusses have an equal effect (combat promotion still works on the attacker by the way).

Example macemen (Strength 8) with 50% city attack bonus attacks longbowmen (Strength 6) with 100% defence bonus.

Normal system 12 vs 12. Civ4 system 8 vs 9.
The difference is that in the civ4 system the percentages are all applied to the defenders strength and thus are all equal.

I don't know why the combat promotions don't work the same though. That's a bit weird.

You're probably right. That way a +%50 on one side and a +%50 on the other side "cancel out". Actually, that IS more intuitive...

Yes, let's not encourage them to make the game any more complicated unless RJ's willing to open a 24/7 support center.

For starters, Tokugawa's a jerk. But most likely you've already talked to him a lot recently, and he's tired of hearing from you even though he likes you. So in a few turns he'll be ready to talk to you again.

Also, let me say I'm pleased to see that Judaism is the biggest religion in your world in the 1920s. In the real world that won't happen till the 2120s.

did you recently stop trading with him since someone asked you to? i had that happen with gandhi once. he still loved me, but he held a grudge for a few turns. the last time i tried to talk to him, he gave me that line that toku gave you. the very next turn, he called me up asking to be my vassal. go figure.

Just a quick point on the Holy City / Wall St issue raised earlier, as I think some confusion has developed.....

If you have the shrine in holy city, and have spread said religion widely, then almost always (I can't even think of a way this wouldn't occur), then your Holy City will be your best gold producing city. The shrine income is 1 GOLD (not commerce) per turn, per city, and therefore it isn't even a decision that takes a moments thought. You build Wall Street there, along with every possible financial development building.

In my current game, huge map, my Cuzco gets 84 Gold per turn from the shrine income (yes that's 84 cities I've managed to spread Buddhism to). At 100% Tax Rate, it generates 512 Gold per turn (that's with Wall Street et al, I haven't got Airports yet so it will get more :))

So if you have a widely spread relligion, with the shrine built, then Wall St is a no-brainer in your Holy City.........(though there are probably exceptions to the rule)..

yes but ... the beauty of shrines is that they get you a ton of gold even at 0% tax rate. running 100% tax rate like you are will get you more, true, but the best part about the shrine being gold, not commerce, is that it works even at 0% tax 100% science.

If you're a warmonger, it's great to start next to Isabella of Spain because she usually founds Judaism and either Hinduism or Buddhism in Madrid. And of course you'll want to go to war with her ASAP, because she's a witch. So Madrid becomes a well placed city (capital cities always seem to be in good locations) with potentially two shrines. This is the ideal financial capital of your empire, by which I mean the place you build Wall Street.

plus banks, grocers, cottages and possibly harbors:)

Also -25% when attacking across a river without amphibious.
By the way, has anyone checked it the two amphibious penalties stack (-25% for across a river and -50% for from the sea)?

Well, apparently they do stack. ;)

You're right of course , but I was only using the 100% tax rate to illustrate the point (and maybe to brag a bit, hey it's I think the most I've ever had from a city and I've played a stupid amount of Civ IV ;)

I was actually running 80 or 90 % science at the time with a empire wide healthy income, but yes, as you say the shrine income is there whatever tax / culture / science sliders you have....which is nice :)

I was recently playing Civ 4 Warlords on Prince level and saved my game to continue it later. When I then saved that game (I can't do long sittings) and retired, it showed the difficulty level as Chieftain. Does anyone know why this is?

That wasn't the difficulty level. If you retire, it shows your score and places you in the list of leaders. Really high scores are equated to Ceaser etc. Since you retired, and didn't get the bonus for winning the game, your score was equated to a Chieftan.
