Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Is it not odd that the scoring system for Civ4 isn't described in the manual? I can use my score for a victory, but I'm not allowed to know what contributes to my score. I once had a culture victory with a terrible score, so I'm guessing that culture doesn't count towards my score.

Where on the web can I find a description of what contributes to my score and how strongly? Is there an official formula, or do we have to guess the formula from observation?

Would I get a higher score by winning the game later (and hence having more time to accumulate my score), or do I get a bonus for winning earlier?

I've wondered about that too! When I get a domination victory, am I being cheated out of my high score? Wouldn't I get a higher score if the game let me carry through with totally dominating the world rather than cutting me off just because I've gotten a certain large portion of it. Do I have to disable the domination victory to get scored fairly?

You get a very significant bonus for winning the game early. It is so significant that you would have to expand your empire extremely fast to get a higher score while finishing later. Fast domination and conquest victories are the games with the highest scores.

When setting a city to perform Research only, I notice that the main research bar doesnt move like when you put the slider bar to full research, yet if I set a city to generate Wealth only I see my finance adjust accordingly, whats going on there?

What are you talking about?
There is a tech slider for the whole empire.
When you start the game it's at 100%, so you can't do much to improve it.

Later you can assign scientists and merchants, or build wealth or science.
Is that what you're talking about?

Anyway, if you want to see the result of your move on the science output, open the economic advisor (F2).

How is the time bonus calculated? I now see were it shows me a breakdown of my score according to Wonders, Population, Land Area, and Technology, but I don't see anything that relates my score to time. How can I determine if I will get a higher score by ending the game now or pushing for one more technology?

when you mouse over your score in the list, you see a "score for winning this turn". Follow this for a few turns and you'll have your answer.
If you play for high score, you should beeline biology : population is the key to score.

apologies if my question lacks clarity, cities can be set to produce not only material things like units, buildings and wonders but research, culture and wealth.

When I set a city to produce only research I'm not sure what I'm getting in return. Perhaps its not worth doing it in the first place.

depends if it's vanilla or warlords, and depends on the situation.
Most common situation :
- you play warlords
- you have several cities with libraries,
- (almost) none have markets
In this situation, it can be useful to build money and raise the science slider.
In vanilla, building money or research is a bit a desperate move.

If two trains leave Decatuor, one at 15 mph, the second at 30 mph, and their destination is 10 miles away, how long will it take for eac train to reach its destination?:D

Wow, I'm impressed your still answering this thread. Thank you.

Anyway, I wanted to know whether the Kremlin reduced rush costs using population (slavery) instead of gold.
Also, do Forbidden Palace/Versailles do anything for you under State Property

That's a no twice.

All the controls I usually see on my screen are gone! What is Player Mode? How did I get into it, and most importantly how do I get out of it? I'm playing Vanilla IV.

Maybe you have accidentally opened the world builder with CTRL-w. It is also closed by CTRL-w. The world builder is a map making tool and you can use it to cheat.

If you select 'lock modified assets' in the custom game setup, then the world builder cannot be opened ingame.

Two noob-esque questions.

Could I somehow remove a religion from my cities? I accidently founded a second religion, and don't want it. Also, how many nukes does it take before global warming kicks in? I want to see the glorious glow of a nuke, but I dont want to mess with the enviroment.

Thanks.

How can you not want another religion? Religions are potentially worth a lot of money if you can build its shrine. That's also one less shrine/religion that the AI has. To answer the question, there is no way to remove religions. They are entirely beneficial anyway.

To answer the second question: it takes only one nuke (or one blown up nuclear plant) to start global warming. The more nukes are being used, the faster global warming will change the terrain.

There are mods that allow you to remove a religion, but in those mods having multiple religions can have negative consequences. In the original game, multiple religions doesn't have any negative consequences.
