Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Does anyone have a complete rundown on the conversion between turn numbers and years, or knows where it could be found? I'm particularly looking for the conversions for normal speed, though seeing the other speeds would be interesting as well.

I'd just take a look into the file CIV4GameSpeedInfo.xml located in ...\Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Assets\XML\GameInfo or ..\Civilization 4\Warlords\Beyond the Sword\Assets\XML\GameInfo or ...\Civilization 4\Assets\XML\GameInfo depending on which version you use.

The file contains a rundown of the number of years per turn for each of the gamespeeds. Games in Beyond the Sword have a few extra turns because Beyond the Sword added a bit more content to the game.

For instance, for BTS, normal speed:

75 turns of 40 years: 4000BC till 1000 BC
60 turns of 25 years: 1000BC till 500AD
25 turns of 20 years: 500AD till 1000AD
50 turns of 10 years: 1000AD till 1500AD
60 turns of 5 years: 1500AD till 1800AD
50 turns of 2 years: 1800AD till 1900AD
120 turns of 1 year: 1900AD till 2020AD
60 turns of 1/2 year: 2020AD till 2050AD

ggganz is right in doubting that - in an unmodded game with time victory enabled the game ends in 2050 - no exceptions.

Yeah, sorry about getting that wrong ... of course, now I'm scratching my head if I completely imagined it, or if the game really lasted a bit longer on lower difficulty levels in some other Civ version.

And we still don't know what's up with Fiz' game.

Roland (and ori), thanks a lot!

get yourself a pile of RAM, remove everything you have running in the background (if you don't play online, you don't need the antivirus, just shut your connection down), and if it still doesn't work, play smaller maps.

On what map size do you play? How much system memory does your computer have? (Big maps and low amounts of system memory don't match.)

Note the time of your crash, right-click on My Computer, click Manage, click Event View. Look at the Application events and the System events to see if there are any with a red X that correspond to the time of your crash.
That may at least point you in the right direction.

RE: My game which has scheduled itself to end in 2080...

The zipped savegame file of my current game is 685K, which exceeds the site's limit. Is there somewhere I can email it?

The 'manage attachment' function has that limit, but the red button called 'Easy Upload System' doesn't have those restrictions. (It looks like a red button with an arrow on it. it's just above the area where you're typing).

Hello Civfanatics. About halfway through the game I get a CTD and then the computer reboots. The error message reads...

"Failed to allocate video memory. Please try reducing your graphics settings.
File:\main\Civilization4\SDKs\Camebryo2_0\Corelibs\NiDX9Renderer\NiDX9SourceTextureData.cpp,Line:321"

I have updated my device drivers and I use ATI Radeon 9600. I have all the patches downloaded.

Is there any fix for this?

I was having this problem FAIRLY REGULARLY, but it did not cause a reboot. Typically it was late in the game when there was a LOT of stuff on the may. Reducing the graphics helped some. I installed BTS and had a couple of Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) type errors. When the PC finished rebooting, it said something to the effect of "your computer has recovered from a fatal error." and gave me an option to check on the status of the error. It opened a web page (as MS.com) and had info about updating my driver. Went to the web page for my graphics card and downloaded & installed the latest driver.

I know you said you had, but I'd double check...

Would someone please explain (or point me towards where it has already been explained) what happens when you choose a speed longer than Normal.

For example, what happens if I choose Epic? More units? More cities? Or are both of those just functions of the map size?

If you choose Epic, then everything goes slower. Research costs more so it will go slower, units and buildings cost more so it will take longer to build them, Great Persons cost more great person points, worker actions take more time and of course you'll have 1.5 times as many turns. Everything is scaled by a factor of 1.5 in epic.

Everything is scaled and that effectively means that there are more decision moments (the turns) but that each decision moment is a little less important. For instance, the decision moments during which you have finished researching a technology are relatively fewer as there are more game turns and an equal number of technologies.

There is one thing that isn't scaled, namely movement. This means that you can move your units more during a game and this has several effects.
- Your units are less likely to become obsolete while moving towards an enemy as research is slowed by unit movement is not.
- You and your enemy cannot (re)build an army as quickly to react to a war declaration.
- Your workers will lose one turn when moving onto terrain which costs 2 movement points and can still move the same distance as during a normal game speed turn, but a turn is worth a little less so effectively your workers are a little bit more efficient.
- As a result, conquest and conquest victories are a little easier.

Since large and huge maps also haven't scaled the movement of units to the larger maps, I would advice to use a slower game speed on a larger map.

Because some things are not scaled (events, the chance of war declaration per turn, the diplomacy requests per turn), I would advice against the speed setting which diverts the most from the standard setting which is marathon. But if you really like the slower game settings, then just pick that one. It isn't that bad, it's just not perfectly scaled.

1. If I raze a city that has already achieved legendary culture, does it still count towards a cultural win?

2. Why do I sometimes see temples and monasteries giving 2 hammers, and then sometimes they don't? What explains this?

Hi all,

I finally got a computer that could run Civ4, so I've been enjoying the heck out of it for the last few weeks. I'm thinking of upgrading to the expansion packs. If I just get Beyond the Sword, will it include the Warlords stuff, too? Or do I have to buy both? And if I do have to buy both, should I buy Warlords first? Will it mess up my game if I buy Beyond the Sword first? Thanks!

Here's the game save of the BTS file scheduled to end 2080. Another oddity is that I'm winning and winning too big.

I downloaded your file - but won't be able to look at it before tonight (for some reason work does not want me to play civ :mischief: - if I don't post about this tonight and no one else does - please remind me :)

BtS includes all the Warlords content except the Scenarios that come with Warlords. I am not sure that you need those

You would have figured this one out yourself if you had continued to play. :) You assumed that the remaining 65 turns would all take 1 year, which isn't true.

It's now 2015AD, and there are 5 more turns of 1 year and then 60 turns of 1/2 year which results in a game that ends in 2050AD.

It seems that all you have to do to win is click 65 times on next turn. ;) I can't see you losing this game.
