Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I don't think that's quite true, unless it changed with the new patch. I've seen religions spread to my religioned cities, although I usually beat every religion in with missionaries.
I had my doubts as well. Although I haven't seen a holy city have another religion spread to it yet. In my previous example I spread Hinduism to the Christian holy city, but not the other way around. I'll see if it eventually happens. I doubt it will happen either domestic or foreign, however. If it was going to happen, it would have already. I've had Hinduism spread to civilizations I haven't even found on the map yet. That means they spread right past other cities that have a religion (including my city right next to it).

Perhaps the issue is that HOLY CITIES will not have other religions spread to them. More experimentation is needed.

Are you sure that that isn't the work of missionaries of your friends that you have right of passage with?

When moving units using the go to command or moving them more than one space at a time, I notice the unit will move really fast and basically skip the animation of it walking from tile to tile. It seems to act as if I had the "quick moves" option turned on in the settings but I don't. Any way to have the game always show the walking animations and not practically teleport the unit to the spot? It walks them normally if I move them one square at a time.

Also, I noticed when certain events happen like a barbarian attacks one of my units, the game does not zoom to the event. All I do is read about it but I don't see the actual combat unfold unless I am already centered over that area. How can I get the game to zoom in on an event like that as it happens? It seems like I have the "no combat zoom" turned on if that’s how that option works that is.

All your help is greatly appreciated!

I have the same problem. Sometimes units completely skip their movement animation. In fact, the only time I see an animation is when I move the unit tile by tile myself. Same happens with enemy units - when I end a turn they disappear and reappear somewhere else. I never see them move.

Any ideas? Is the 'quick move' option reversed? I'll need to check that when I'm in front of the game again.

Since my original posting, I've read elsewhere on the forums that cities with an already established religion are not as susceptible. Perhaps this is my problem, and more time is needed for the cities that already have religion. This would at least explain why some cities across the map are getting my religion before others much closer. Perhaps Holy Cities take even longer.

If a city can't get another religion passively what's the point of the civic that limits religion spread in your lands to your state religion

It prevents a rival civ's religion from spreading to you, causing you to waste missionaries getting your religion to your cities in a decent amount of time, and prevents Issabella from getting +20 gold per turn and from declaring war on you just because you have a couple cities of yours with her religion. :crazyeye:

Fair enough, thanks for explaining. So, when I acquire a new city, it is vulnerable to getting another religion (except if I have theocracy). Once it has my religion, it will not pick up another unless someone slips a missionary in there. That does make sense otherwise the civs with the holy cities would eventually be able to see most of the map. At least you can control it then.

Is there any kind of Zone of Control in this game? I mean anything to prevent my units from marching around enemy units. In Civ2 you just couldn't, and in Civ3 they got free shots on you (at least some types of units did).

There is no Zone of Control anymore.

In fact, if you are not at war with someone their units can occupy the same square as your units. So you can no longer cut off the enemy with a line of your units during peace time.

Question Every civ has a favorite Civic, (i.e.; Egyptian, Hereditary.), does it give any advantage if you choose the fav civic of you chosen civ?

Seems like the only things I've found in the forums about my two issues are just more questions but no answers

I guess slowing down unit animations and making the game zoom to a battle off screen is not something a user can modify. Too bad, those two things are annoying. I can already tell I'm going to miss events if I'm not paying attention. Is there a key to zoom to the last event at least?

I'm waiting to see if anyone has insight on your question as well regarding animations.

As far as zoom to events - I know you can click the button on the top left of the screen. This log displays all the messages printed to the screen. Quite a lot can happen at the beginning of each turn, so sometimes things are easily missed. You have to be quick and ready. If you miss something you can always look here.

There's a natural pause between important messages. If these messages have to do with an area on the map, a bubble will appear over it. If the part of the map is not visible, the bubble will appear to the side of the screen, much like what happens if you scroll away from a highlighted unit. Clicking the bubble will take you right there.

What would be nice is if there was a way to bring up the bubble from the log. Most of the messages display the city name, so you just have to look. The bubbles are merely convenience.

Hey People, how do I order a worker to auto build a road to somewhere?

How do I turn on the advanced options lique in C3C?

Thanks a lot:crazyeye:

Use the icon that looks like a road with an arrow of each side. You click that icon then click the location you want to build a road to.

I don't think there are "advanced options" like in C3C. You can only do what the worker can do to the tile.

Not directly, but they will normally use that civic, and if you use 3-5 civics that the AI uses too, they will be happier with you.

Yup, I got that and it's a good change for peacetime, but it's also absurd if an enemy force can march right around your fortress without being hindered at all.

I think the view is that the squares are large, so you can go around a fortress because of distance. A lot of board wargames don't have 'zones of control'. In board wargames, ZOC's are usually justifed by weapon range in hex size, or sometimes for patrol zone range. For CIV, ZOC's may not make sence with the game scale.

If I build a city on silver, and I have the knowledge of mining, do I get any of the benefits of mined silver ? Or is the silver totally lost ?

I thought of that too, but they're not shy about abandoning reality of scale for the sake of gameplay. For example, a straight line should be much faster than a windy one, so taking the path of the O's in my second dorky picture should be faster than the path in the first one which evades A, a fortified unit on a hill or in a fortress. But that's not the case with Civ4, any more than a panzer moving faster than a horse or much faster than a walker in heavy armor is.

You definitely get silver as a resource in that city and any connected to it. Whether you get a bonus to commerce I don't know.

Can someone please let me know how to make the game automatically send (or just send within the game) the save for pbem (play by email) games after I make my turn? It's less convenient to have to open up my browser and send manually.

Thanks!
