Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

What do you think the chance of doing it diplomatically would be, providing that she doesn't have the shrine? Is there something I can do that improve that chance? (I was thinking of converting to her religion just so I won't suffer the -4 in relationship, but if I convert, then I don't think there's an option to adopt Free Religion)

This might be what you're looking for. It's slightly out of date, but most map types are covered. :)

Thanks - that's what I have found.

Turns out, there is some description if you select play now... still not much on things like rainforest, though :(

Another question:

Is there any guide anywhere to exactly where you can build different improvements? You can build some stuff on tundra next to a river, but not if you aren't next to a river, for instance, and you can sometimes build cottages on hills, but the civilopedia is just awful at telling you anything about it.

If you adopt Free Religion you lose all diplomatic bonuses and penalties related to religion. So you would lose the -4 penalty, but you would also be missing out on the epic bonus Izzy would give you for sharing her faith.

That intel is in the game manual. You can check the compreensive charts in the war academy for that too, I asume

what happens to my espionage points if I start out on a small continent and destroy my neighbors? Do they accumulate until I meet the other continent or do I start at zero?

Does the city manager realise the value of working cottages? i.e. if you put it on commerce focus, and assuming all else is equal, will it favour developing the cottage/village over some other commerce tile? What if the cottage/village currently generates less but would eventually generate more?

Depends on the tile. If the alternative is a Gold, Silver or Gems, the city governor is unlikely to go for the cottage tile (and it shouldn't!), provided you have enough food. If the alternative is a coastal tile though, then sure - the city governor will prioritize the cottage. ;)

If I form a permanent alliance with an AI, will it know that my privateers belong to me/us?

They're both excellent but most people prefer BUG. It includes more stuff. Note that none of it actually changes the game hence the name "unaltered gameplay"

Is it better to implement Slavery early in the game to "whip" things, or will the unhappiness unbalance the benefit?

As with all things related to civ, the answer is that it depends.

Generally though, I'd say that whipping is extremely beneficial to the early game. The increased  is counterbalanced by a decreased  from population crowdedness. Granaries/Courthouses should normally be whipped first.

Slavery is also a great tool if you let the city grow over the happy cap. A two pop whip results in a net -1 unhappy and three pop whips in -2 unhappy.

In game you go over to the right side and there's a path of folders something like Save -> Single -> (your saves show up) Auto/Quick. Choose the auto folder. Note that it only keeps one games worth of autosaves. If you start a new game and play only one turn, all your old games autosaves are erased.

And it's not like I mind the extra post count but you are allowed to post more than one question per post you know ;)
