Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thanks for the info guys. I just want to know when to expect certain things out of the AI or how they interact with each other. ANNNNND when exactly they enter panic mode and start workshopping over all the fully developed towns in their empire

Here's a question: Is Firaxis releasing any new patches for BTS anytime soon? Or are we stopping with 3.17?

I've heard rumors that they are working on Civ 5 (and nothing else). But hey that is completely...

Ok, I found this:

I have done this for maps, but they are not showing up in the game.

Maybe you put them in the wrong version of the game. That folder structure exists for each version of the game (vanilla, Warlords, Beyond the Sword). So if you place it in the folder structure for Warlords, then you won't find it when you use Beyond the Sword.

The latest patch was some time ago and there has been no mention of a new patch from Firaxis so I wouldn't expect any new patches. Next to that, not too long ago a Firaxian unofficially gave some changes to solve some multiplayer bug. They wouldn't do that unofficially when they had been creating another official patch.

Interesting. So I guess the next thing down the line is civ 5 then, and no more updates for civ 4...

I don't have any of those versions yet. Just pure CivIV. Hmm... Thanks for the eventual response, much appreciated. I guess I'll have to figure this out.

Is there a way to watch a game full of AI play out?

Besides what else was already mentioned, you could also ally yourself with an AI or two using permanent teams. You would need to make a "custom" game to do this. You may also want to ally enemy AIs together as well to make things more fair. You'll be able to see everything your teamed AI is doing. While they will prepare for it, war declarations and peace negotiations go exclusively through you.

Very good questions and really not that clear when you're playing the game.

1) yes.

2) Basically, you need to have a trade road connection to their lands, open borders and you need to see their cultural borders. But it's a little more complicated then that. So I'll let DanF5771 do the explaining as he did in excellent job in this post of his.
If you can't trade with a civilisation after the :traderoute: symbol appeared, then they are benefiting from trade routes with you, but you aren't benefiting from trade routes with them.

Thanks for the info!

I had that ah-ha! moment while playing Civ regarding building modifiers: they only modify after commerce has been fed through the slider. So is the following understanding correct?

If a city produces 10 :commerce:, and the slider is at 60% :science:, then 4 :commerce: are being converted into :gold: for the treasury? So improvements such as the bank are only modifying the 4 :commerce:?

But how do the modifiers stack? Are they simply added to together?

Yes. Therefore, Bank + Market + Grocer together give you +100% cash.

I could be mistaken, but I believe things like shrine income and merchant specialists directly add gold to income, rather than go towards research. This is why it's usually an excellent idea to put wall street in the same city as a major religious shrine.

If I'm wrong, please someone correct me.

That's true.

It's the difference between tile improvements and trade which produce commerce (:commerce:) and merchant specialist and shrines which produce gold (:gold:). Gold is just one of the parts into which commerce is divided, but sources which produce gold directly of course aren't divided anymore (by the slider).

Wall Street indeed is often best placed in a city which produces a lot of gold and not a city which produced a lot of commerce. Sometimes this can be the same, but it is not necessarily so. A (great) shrine city or a city with lots of merchants or a city with a corporation headquarters is often the best place for Wall Street. Such a city produces lots of gold independent of the slider.

Indeed. Depending on the size of the map and how many corporations you found and spread, it's perfectly feasible to get well over 1000 gold per turn in income from the headquarters. All you need is a Market/Grocer/Bank and Wall Street, and a whole lot of executives. It's certainly a benefit worth putting in the effort for - not to mention the individual advantages of the corporations themselves. :)

When you capture a city via Culture flip does your Civ take a relationship hit with the other Civ?

When you capture a city via Culture flip does your Civ take a relationship hit with the other Civ?
No. However, the new city may have extra shared tiles with the other civ, which might give negative diplomatic points due to interfering borders. By the same token though, the city flip might reduce the number of shared tiles with the other civ, which might remove negative diplomatic points and give a net positive outcome. It just depends on the situation.

Hammer Overflow is very confusing. What are some simple tips that I can use to take advantage of it?
