Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Is there a max of "great people" that can be alloacted inside a city, or you can go crazy and put them all inside one? anyone has tried it yet?

I stuffed tons of great people into one of my cities once, it only shows five people on the city screen, but I was still getting the bonuses from each new person I added to my city.

By the way, has anyone else been bugged about the fact that on the cover of Civ IV it shows inside a town, and the Sphynx and Leaning Tower of Pisa are in it and yet it's impossible to build those?

is there any replays for this game

The game will do the standard turn-by-turn replay at the end where it shows the colored areas of control, cities popping up as well as wonders and the like. Also, if you go to your Hall of Fame, there is a small square at the start of the score line, on the left side, where if you click on it, it will show you the replay for that game.

This goes back to an earlier debate, but I think you need to actually work the mine for it to discover anything. I've discovered resources a couple of times, but always on mines that were being worked.

Good point, come to think of it I can't recall what condition were present when discovering a new resource, I'll bear it mind next time I make a surprise discovery.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I've noticed that i sometimes get a production bonus from "overflow from previous buildings". What previous bulidings? and why are they overflowing?

One more thing, is first strike just when defending or also when attacking?

Anybody...?

No

But yu can mine hills outside the 'fat cross' in the hope of discovering a resource there. You can also build fortresses to help with defence and hook up resources with mines, farms, plantations etc

You can BUILD a mine on those hills and a resource may later appear (not from the mining but from discovering a new technology), but if you don't build another city whose "fat cross" area includes the mine, the mine will never operate and you will never be able to take advantage of the resource. I just learned this in the recent game I played. :(

Also, a good thing to know (another bit of info I learned in my first game) is that you are not allowed to build cities within two squares (including diagonals) of another city. Although the steadily increasing cultural achievements of one of my cities kept taking land away from a rival civ, I was never able to use the land because of the way the AI had positioned its cities (very clever of it, I must say).

Commerce/gold question.

This still confuses me. I'll try to be as clear as possible.

I have a city. Nice little city. It has tiles. The tiles produce "commerce" or let's say "coins". Also trade routes produce coins. Let's say it adds up to 100 coins.

I have my research slider set up to 100%. This means that 100 coins get turned into 100 research beakers. Yay.

But then how is it possible that I still get, I dunno, +14 gold each turn? If every coin from every city gets turn into a beaker, how do I manage to pay the maintance costs, the army costs and still get a few spare coins?

Some things produce gold directly rather than commerce. The most important gold producer is a religious shrine, which alone can often allow you to run at a profit at 100% science. Merchant specialists, and great prophet and great merchant superspecialists also contribute gold. You may also be getting gold per turn in diplomatic deals with other civs.

I've noticed that I can't cancel deals for a period of time. How many turns is the minimum? Is the "no breaking" limit for all deals or only certain types?

Hi Guys,

I have just installed civIV and I cannot seem to get it to run.

The onscreen display said that it had installed correctly. When I click on the desktop icon or insert the disk and click on play it loads until it gets to Check XML and then it justs stops.

I have a 3gig procssor, 1meg ram, a large hard drive, a 256m graphics card so it should run fine.

I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it and still the same problem!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated?

under space elevator it says "Can build at a maximum latitude of 30 degrees" what does this mean?

The space elevator has to be built fairly close to the equator, i.e within 30 degrees of it. Basically means it can only be built in cities in about the middle third of the map.

After taking a city in foreign territory, I often find that I have just the land the city resides on to harvest. In the attached screenshots, you will see a prime example:

The first shows the available locations to harvest from inside the city screen, the second the overhead view.

The third and fourth illustrate an experiment I tried - sending some troops out to destroy the 'enemy structures' and sit on the land... no change. If I remember correctly, simply putting the unit on the enemy box in early versions of Civ would ownership of that spot to you.

Can someone please explain this to me?

Thanks,
Matt
PS. I am new at this (haven't played for YEARS), but learning quickly again...

It looks to me that your problem is that the close (and culturally powerful) enemy city is too close to alow your borders to expand, especially since because you just captured the city it has no culture, and therefore no ability to push back the borders of the close enemy cities until they too are captured.

Hi im new and try to find out why when i went to reload civ 4 i now get a message saying Feature transfer error,Data error cyclic redundency check. when i start to install i get to five bars and to Art0.FPK then it stops. Help me please. I run xp home

Is this a bug?

I am not sure if it is, or if I am missing something. Playing a OCC (on Monarch if it matters), and have founded Boudhism and Taoism. I have built one temple of each, and recently discovered the tech granting access to cathedrals. However, when I go to the city menu to try to build a cathedral, it is greyed out, and the explanatory text is: "Requires Boudhist temple. 1/2".

Huh???

To build a cathedral of a religion (e.g. Buddhism) you have to have a certain number of temples of that religion in your empire, the exact number depending on map size. For example on your current map size, you'd have to build two Buddhist temples to build one Buddhist Cathedral (and 4 if you wanted to build 2 cathedrals, and so on). However you can only build one temple of each religion in a city, so since you're playing an OCC you can't build the second Buddhist temple you'd need to build a Buddhist cathedral as you'd need a second city. As a result it is impossible to build any cathedrals in an OCC.

I'll add to MrCynical's response by noting that, for OCC games, the prerequsite building threshold has been removed for all other structures. For example, you no longer have to bulid x number of universites before you can build the Oxford national wonder -- you only have to build one univeristy. Only one forge needed. There are a number of other examples.

But for some reason the required number of temples before cathedrals is still a part of the OCC. Could have beed left there intentionally, or could be an error/omission in game production. I can't say.

Probably would have made it too overpowering, think about how much they could increase culture in a city, together the additional percentage that the cathedrals would make would be too much.

I was thinking the same thing, that it would be too overpowering culture-wise. But on a similar note, the ability to fill one city with ALL of the national wonders makes that a huge advantage as well.

the answer to this might already be in the bug reports forum:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=170

or someone could help you there anyway.
