Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I've noticed that I can't cancel deals for a period of time. How many turns is the minimum? Is the "no breaking" limit for all deals or only certain types?

Still hoping for an answer, can't find it in the book.

I experienced this problem a couple of times in my last game, especially when I was trading gold for resources (and I was the one receiving resources and losing gold). I think it's a bug - I had to declare war in order not to lose huge amounts of gold each turn - after declaring war all deals are canceled. Normally you can cancel deals after 10 turns.

After taking a city in foreign territory, I often find that I have just the land the city resides on to harvest. In the attached screenshots, you will see a prime example:

The first shows the available locations to harvest from inside the city screen, the second the overhead view.

The third and fourth illustrate an experiment I tried - sending some troops out to destroy the 'enemy structures' and sit on the land... no change. If I remember correctly, simply putting the unit on the enemy box in early versions of Civ would ownership of that spot to you.

Can someone please explain this to me?

Thanks,
Matt
PS. I am new at this (haven't played for YEARS), but learning quickly again...
When you first take over a city, its citizens are in revolt -- you only get the square the city is on. Leave troops in the city then after a number of turns the revolt will be supressed. you'll get the normal cross of control (under the influence of surrounding cities of course)

Setting a custom game to have Random Personalities does exactly what? Randomizes an empire's civic choices, or it's aggressiveness/other attributes also?

I wonder for two reasons. Firstly I don't want to make things easier for myself by making peacenicks out of aggressive empires. Secondly Tokugawa is still an ******* in all my games, so I'm thinking it may just randomize civic preferences.

Yes, it randomizes them completely. They might be more peaceful, but they might also be more warlike.

I have a few questions...
1) Is there a way to make unlimited turns? (I remember like in Civ 3 you could keep on playing forever and the game would never end.)

2) Is there a way to remove a religion in your city without actually using the WorldBuilder?

1) When you start a custom game uncheck the "time victory" box. The game will then run on until someone wins by a different condition, even if that is after 2050.

2)There is no way other than Worldbuilder, but given multiple religions are always beneficial there seems little reason to anyway.

Thank you! That was a very quick response.

I asked this i another forum too. I am new and i don't know how to load a mod. Can you help me? It is a mod to be Hannibal.

From the main menu, click on 'Advanced,' then click on 'Load a Mod.'

As long as you've installed it correctly (according to the modder's instructions), the game shold give you a popup telling you that it needs to restart to load the mod. Click on ok, and let the magic happen.

Are the cities customized for each civ?

If by this you mean "Do the buildings look different?" then no. Generally speaking, every city looks the same, depending on the buildings/wonders arleady present.

Thank you very much for you answer!

Sabote -- welcome to the forums. I hope that you're enjoying CivIV.

To answer your questions:

1) No, you don't lose the tech or benefits of something that you trade. However, you should pay attention to the effects of the tech that you gain from the trade -- does it negate the effects of a certain wonder? Does it make one of your luxury resources obsolete? These effects are usually highlighted in red when you hover the mouse cursor over the tech in question. The same information is also available through the pedia.

2) Workboats cannot work 'normal' water tiles, only those with fish/etc. resources, as you've noticed. Inside the city display you can assign citizens to work water tiles if they are in your city radius. They will give some benefit, but not as much food as tiles with the resources on them.

Hello helpful people!

If I offer one of my resources that says for example “1 of 1 ivory,” does that mean I have 1 extra ivory, or will I be offering my only ivory resource?

I hope that makes sense. Thank you in advance for your replies! :D

Dave

I'm pretty sure that that means you are offering your only ivory.
