Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Roger! :D

I installed the BUG modifier and will soon delete it, lots of XML loading errors or somthing http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd475/charli871/?action=view&current=BUGerror.jpg, crashed the game very quickly. Not sure if i installed it wrong or somthing :(, installed it in the civ iv folder.

meh bad day for my civilization haha

Are you playing a mod (other than BUG) or the basic BTS game? Some mods don't play well with BUG.

Specifically where did you install BUG? The message is hard to read in the screen capture but it looks like BUG could not find some of its files, which implies it is not installed where it belongs.

Since your game is working a bit flakey anyway, it could be that your game has developed some corrupted files. That would explain why you lost the info you used to get and could also be why BUG does not load properly. You might want to try reinstalling the game.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure BUG only works with BtS. Could be wrong though.

BUG= Beyondthesword Unaltered Gameplay.

I knew that... I swear... :mischief:

BUG is kinda like morning coffee. At first it's new and exciting, then it gradually becomes an accepted and expected part of your life, quietly controlling your mind- until one day you try to live without it. That's when the headache starts and the shakes set in.

(I recently bought a new laptop. I, of course, immediately installed BtS. I made it ten seconds into my first game before missing BUG.)

I just installed it in the civ 4 folder, tried moving it to CustomAssets folder after it crashed but it made no difference. Its unloadable now so i uninstalled civ from my computer, to be fair the game had become unplayable anyway without the info on diplomacy anyway. May have another crack at installing it again but without knowing why I have the only copy of civ4 ever to have this problem im not sure i have the will.

I really have to thank you guys for trying to help though so thank you very much! :)

From your screen shot, it is apparent that you are playing BTS.

Just for the sake of trying to help him troubleshoot, what did you see that indicated BtS? After re-reading his posts I noticed he did say he wasn't using an expansion, and the Civ4 icon from his screenshot is the one for vanilla.

First of all, please don't give up on Civ4 just because my meager attempt at help didn't help. :mischief: I think I steered you wrong by mentioning BUG because it doesn't run on vanilla Civ4. Don't get me wrong, I highly recommend both BtS and BUG, but let's get your game working right first. :D I'd do what s.bernbaum said and try re-installing it. If you used to be able to see the modifiers but you can't anymore, you may indeed have some corrupted files. Or this might be a bug- if so try posting it in the Civ4 Bug Report thread.

I'm trying to remember where the unitbuildprob info is located. (A page in the forums, not in the actual game code.) Someone help please and thank you!

First, you can make the image appear directly in your post by clicking the tag in Photobucket (this copies the tag for the picture) and then pasting that in your post. An alternative is to just attach the *.jpg file using the paper-clip icon at the post header.

Second, have you changed any of your game options recently? If you go into the game options, there should be some boxes to check for Foreign Advisor. Make sure you have all the ones checked that you want. If that's not the problem, and you aren't using a mod, then I can't help you.

My bad.... I just now looked at the screen shot again. I don't see small images well, due to some eye damage due to aging. (I have my browser set to increase all smaller fonts sizes to 14 point, but that does not work on images.) I thought that I saw leaders there who were introduced in BTS. But on closer looking, I see that they are all vanilla leaders.

So, BTS crashes because it does not work with vanilla.

Since it is vanilla, I would bet there is a corrupted file. I played vanilla for a long time after BTS came out and the info that he can't access was always available. The diplomacy info screen wasn't removed. So, if it is gone, I would say a file is corrupted.

Nope. Only for forests inside the BFC.
One extra thing worth noting - I believe if you have a forest preserve inside the BFC of two or more cities (i.e. on an overlapping tile), then both cities get the happiness benefit - regardless of which one "owns" the tile at a particular moment. Haven't tried it myself though... can anyone confirm this? :)

Really newbie question here. Can you buy new military units using gold?
Only when running the Universal Suffrage civic which you get with Democracy or by havign the Pyramids. Though it isn't worth bothering with until you have lots of mature cottages (towns) and a lot of gold mulitpliers (banks/markets/grocers).

Agreed. I find that it is often too expensive even then, unless it's an emergency, and you desperately need a tank or gunship in the late game.

Universal Suffrage is a civic for specialized goals. It can be used with the pyramids to accelerate a cultural victory by buying temples and/or Cathedrals. It can also be used as well to accelerate a conquest/domination victory if you have all the military tech you need.

I've also used it to buy 5-6 nukes the turn after the Manhattan Project to nuke out the uranium of my opponents before they can build their own nukes.

Indeed, it's not really the most efficient way of producing units. Often you're better off drafting or (sometimes) whipping - or even upgrading well-promoted units - rather than purchasing them via Universal Suffrage. However, if you have a large excess of gold and/or no immediate need for more technologies, unit buying can be useful - especially in emergencies.

Actually, I find the most attractive benefit of Universal Suffrage is the extra hammer from all towns. In a late-game empire - especially one in a golden age - that production bonus can be absolutely huge.

That's the only reason I use it; makes all those cottages extra tasty. Also, if you play a Revolutions-based mod (like I do, with Legends of Revolution), then it serves an added purpose in making the people happy, so they don't revolt. TBH, though, prior to LoR, I very seldom used it; I was much more of a Police State-kinda guy.
