Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Do AIs use airlift? I just noticed one of my vassal is landlocked, and I'm invading another continent, would he be able to airlift to my cities over there, or is he just useless?

Apologies if this has already been answered, but is there any way to get more seats in a Hotseat game? I would have sworn I saw a mod claiming to do just that, but I don't have BtS, which it required. I want to have every single leader fighting it out on a massive map, but all the threads I've found on the subject were about Civ 3 and Civ 5, so no help there.

Quick question guys; If you get someone to stop trading with someone - how long will that trade embargo last? In a game I had Mansa and Willem as vassals and made them stop trading with the other continent - 5 turns later they had begun to trade with the other continent again and made them too advanced for me to invade... So how long can I expect the "stop trading with x" to last?

I believe it's 10 turns, but I'm not sure.

Hey guys quick question;

When you make a map in Worldbuilder, can you change the civs you put in it at a later date?

I made one a while ago that took me ages but one of the civs was put in by accident and feels really out of place, I have a better replacement civ to put in instead of it too.

I would like to not have to make a map from scratch again, I figure there must be a quick fix but I'm stumped, any ideas?

Cheers!

I believe it is a random chance each turn for them to be able to talk to each other again. I don't know the percentage chance and I don't know if it changes as time goes on.

5 turns is definitely an unusually short time for it to last. Probably 10 turns is the average.

I've seen AI use airlift, but it was in an unusual game where the barbarians were given airports in their cities and were isolated on 1 tile islands. The barbarians definitely shifted their units around with the airports.

With that said, I've never seen an AI use airlift effectively. I think you have to assume that your vassal will be completely useless in your war with the other continent. (other than perhaps helping fend off a counter assault on your continent)

Looks like you might be able to open the worldbuilder file with a text editor and manually adjust the leader and civilization. I tried it and was able to change the leader and the leader traits changed. With a little experimentation you probably should be able to figure out how to change the other characteristics (starting techs, etc.)

AFAIK only BTS has a patch where you don't need the cd, vanilla + warlords come fully patched but you need the cd for them I'm afraid...

Hi all,I have civ4 complete with warlords&bts.I can play bts without the cd in the drive but not civ4 or warlords is there a patch so that i could play civ4 & warlords without the cd?

This is an old subject but I just came across a good solution for it so please allow me to answer it now.

There is a free program called Daemon Tools Lite that allows you to make an image of your game CD and then mount it as a disk drive thereby allowing you to play the game, or another game, without the disk being in the drive. I have been using it for a couple weeks now and am very pleased to have a free DVD drive again. It works well and is free, the downside is that it does take up some space on your hard drive but that is to be expected.

Is there a way to decline the 'steal technology' offer?
I'm sorry. I don't understand. Could you be more specific, please?

When mission is complete and the steal technology options come up, how do I decline to steal? Prob a dumb question but I dont see a reject/cancel option. I can't get to end of turn. Thing is its only one tech and i'm 2 turns from getting it myself.

Is this for Civ IV? or Civ V?

This is a Civ IV forum...

I'm only familiar with Civ IV and in Civ IV you have to consciously choose to steal a tech with a spy stationed in a city. That brings up a window with buttons for the techs you have enough points to steal and a "never mind" button.

If you are talking about Civ IV click the "never mind" button.

Is there a point in taking siege units to assault a city if you are attacking with gunpowder units? The game says that wall and castle defense bonus does not apply to gunpowder units. If you're still supposed to siege, are the siege units taking away any defense that isn't wall and castle or is it just taking from a combined defense percentage?

The defense percentage comes from the culture in the city. Walls and castles act as a multiplier for the percentage and reduce the effect of attacking siege. Siege is needed to reduce (and eliminate) the defense percentage bonus, no matter what type of actual attack units you are using. Also, for some strange reason, the game developers decided that walls and castles become ineffective not when the attacker is using gunpowder units but oddly when the defender has discovered gunpowder.

Wait, what? I think you just confused me more. You're saying that walls are still effective for an enemy town until *they* research gunpowder and it doesn't matter at all if *I* am attacking with gunpowder units?
