Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

If you get a free tech from something, what decides what tech you get? Do you get to pick what tech you get from what tech you meet the prerequisites for?
If it's from a goody hut it's random, though limited to techs you can research and to a certain point in the tech tree (IIRC Astronomy is the latest tech you can get for free from a goody hut). Other free techs (Oracle/Liberalism) you can choose, but you're again limited to techs you're able to research at that point.

If there's a random event that gives you a free tech I'm not sure what it does.

+15% for having state religion and they don't, +25% for having holy city, +40% for both
You only get the 25% if you also qualify for the 15%?

If it's like that, especially strange that many don't think it's worth founding a religion. I suppose people mean taking a religious city through war but that isn't so easy

Great people as tech bonus do not increase the counter needed for your normal great people from GPP.

Great generals are different in principle. You can only get them by winning battles and they do not interact in any way with the other great people.

No, those numbers can stack obviously since you've seen +40% before, but +25% is possible if you have the holy city even if he's running the correct state religion.
Founding an buddhism/hinduism isn't certain. Then there's the opportunity cost of missing out on other starting techs. Then there's the diplo cost, you get more of a bonus joining someone else's religion than they do joining yours. Then there's the difficulty of outspreading the AI religions. Lastly there's the tremendous opportunity cost in building a great priest for a shrine. The higher the difficulty level the worse it is. It's not plausible to do this on deity, but it is possible to conquer cities. It can sometimes make sense to found your own midgame religion when isolated. Sometimes I've founded judaism when I have gold/gem in BFC and don't see any religion in my neighbors. I also use espionage though, most players don't.

When you have woodland 3 promotion getting 50% attack forest. Is that if you are in woods but the enemy is not, enemy is in woods but you are not, or both? (like with and without it being the last unit so you'd move onto the tile) And do all these bonuses stack on each other?
Woody3 bonus only if you attack into forest or jungle - the tile the unit is attacking from is irrelevant. Also, it provides same tile healing (love it for supermedic). Not sure I understand your question about stacking in this case.

So if you have woodland upgrade one giving a defensive bonus of 20% and upgrade two giving 30%, is the defense value when on forest 50% or 30%?

It would be 100%. You get 20% (first promotion) + 30% (second promotion) +50% (native forest defense bonus).

I got a event regarding a marriage and religious insult or whatever, it asks me if I "want to declare a holy war" and it just gives me "yes" or "no" with no explanation of what this actually means. Can someone please tell me what this is about and how this mechanism works?
It is simply declaring war, nothing different from a normal war. :)

There's another version of that event where you're the one hosting the marriage and given the choice of how heavily to support it, with the most supporting option forcing the annoyed civ to DoW you, complete with getting "you declared war on our friend!" penalties.
