anyone out there know how to extend the number of turns? It always seems that I am running out of turns before I am done enjoying the game and I have to go on an all out rush to finish my plans. I guess I am just used to playing Civ3 and a game taking 2-3 weeks of every night to play to the end. Civ4 it seems that it only takes two or threee nights and up pops the "100 turns left" msg.

Thanks,
Yep, as was said, play a custom game and disable the time victory option. I too do not like having a set number of turns until the end of the game. I like the game to end when something definitive happens.

Question of my own:
I thought I read somewhere that war weariness and the cost to upgrade units is really toned down for the AI. Is this true? Is there anything else the AI experiences different from human players? In the past I usually extend a war in an effort to bring the attacking civ's economy to a halt with war weariness when I don't let them out of a war. Is this really accomplishing anything?

My stupid question.

Is it still possible to split a Civilization up? I remember back in the good old days of CIV fighting an exceedingly nasty war which culminated in me sacking the other guys capitol, half his empire then revolted and formed its own Civ (one which hadn't been in the game prior to it's existence). Is this possible in CIV ? Lord knows if it was something I could angle towards it'd possibly make things a bit easier.

No, you can't split a civ up like that. Though going cutthroat, right for the capital, can be advantageous, as long as you've got the military to back it up.

How do I know when an age is about to end and and a new one to begin. Does it erealy even help if you go int oa new age. Would I be better off using my 2 Great people to build something?

If you're talking about a golding age, to tell how much you have lefy you should see a gold coin/disc where the time and date go with a number in ( ) . That number is how many turns are left. If you get a new golden age while you are still having one the 8 years are just added on to the amount of years that you had left, so a golden age with 3 turns left, and you started another with leaders would leave you with 11 years left, so yes it does help, but doesn't any immeadite difference.

An age when you research a tech (ie theology), and go into the next period in time (ie Medieval) is really only for decor and music if that is what you are talking about, it makes no difference to actual gameplay.

Welcome to CFC by the way! :)

What tiles count towards the domination limit? Land tiles only, land and coast? Surly ocean does not?

All tiles count towards a domination victory, including those moody ocean tiles.

Are you sure? It must be really hard to get a domination win on a world with a lot of sea and not a lot of coast.

Sorry Dude,

Should have said 'Only land tiles count for domination victory, do not include those moody ocean tiles'

So not coast tiles?

Quick question: what is the requirement for building the Forbidden Palace? I already have built at least a dozen courthouses (more than the minimum requirement of 8 courthouses) and I also have built over 30 cities, but it's still saying something about not meeting the 8 cities requirement. What am I missing?

Hello again!

How big does the ol' fat cross get? I am trying to plan my empire, and I need some cartography help. :)

Thanks as always!

Are you trying to build it in a city with a courthouse? I've run into similar situations with other buildings, but I'm still feeling my way with the specifics of most of them. Maybe it won't let you build the FP in a city without a courthouse.

The fat cross is 20 tiles, plus the city tile. The 8 tiles immediately around the city tile, plus a row of three after that, but not using the corners.

Generally speaking, two squares in each direction, except diagonally.

If you open the city display, the view of your city will highlight all the tiles within its radius (fat cross), and the greyed-out tiles can't be worked by that city.

The fat cross gets to be:
_000_
00000
00X00
00000
_000_

-X is the tile where the city is located on.
-The 0's are the tiles which can be worked by Citizens in the city, please note your borders on the map will grow beyond what the city is able to work, those are your cultural/national borders

can someone please tell me how to choose a picture on my computer as my avatar ? i only get the choise between no avatar and pre defs...

OK. I already know some of the answers to these questions. Please provide good (short) answers, raising some of the issues, good and bad points/strategies, and avoiding dissertations and mathematical answers. Thank you.

Answers:

1. Play the Tutorial (done that twice). 2. Read the Boards (done that, some). 3. Play some games (done that three times, last time on small world/easiest setting).

Questions:

1. WAR! The only time I have ever experienced WAR was when my slaves, er, people, got to complaining about "Hey, we need a settler", over and over and over and over and over again. So, bored, I looked at my neighbors and declared WAR on the nearest, thinking that I would take me some land (learned lots about warfare, don't forget to get all of them there cities; build lots of catapults and a strong army). If I play without declaring WAR, will someone eventually declare WAR on me? Should I listen to these complainers wanting more room? (See #3 below).

2. Religion? I haven't played enough to get all the nuances. Most of the time my cities are all over the board with their religions. Should I adopt a religion as the State's religion if I am the first to discover it? Then, not worry when I discover new, better (joke!!) religions?

3. Cities. Is it better to turn off growth eventually? Do I want my cities to be as big as possible? Soon enough, they look like this (red frown) or this (green face) being unhealthy and unhappy. Is there a maximum size/ optimum size city? (Also, see #4 below).

4. Cities. When you go to the city screen, and the white circles indicate where your citizens are working, is you city benefiting from all of the farms/other stuff with roads that you have built, if they are not in white circles? (Assume that EVERY square around the city [and indeed within your cultural borders] have been improved and roads built.)

5. Technologies. On the technology advisor, if you accidentally "click" on a new technology, it turns this kind of blue shade. Then, later you may be surprised to find out that that technology has been worked on by you. Is there an "unclick" method?

6. Making friends. I have read, several times, that if you don't have a strong ally, you have "already lost the game". Where do I get my "How to make friends and keep them" tutorial? i.e., how to pick your big ally? How do you make and keep him?

Thanks.
