Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thanks a4phantom

I agree about the use of GPs for a GA. I don't recall actually had many civ4 GAs in the past. Eight turns is nothing like the 20 turns in Civ3.

What caued me to ask the question was that I had gotten a GA from the Taj Mahal and later used my UU for a second one. Now I Know about the UU and the reason I didn't get the second GA.

I've seen screenshots of warlord units with edited individual names. How do you do that? And can you do it to units with no warlord attached?

If you click on the name of the unit in the detail area (down in the lower left corner), you will get a pop-up that lets you type a new name. Works for any unit - I often rename units to reflect their history (e.g. my first scout winds up named 'Dances on Wolves', etc.)

ok... because my question was pretty much ignored last page, here it is once again:

how do i found an unit (any kind) once i put it to sleep? is there a hotkey for that?

the only one i now can only cycle between the active units. because of that, i have quite a few military units, priests, great people and workers "lost" on my map

the same thing goes for when you put them in "auto" mode or "exploration" mode (in the case of boats or scouts)...

can someone please help me out here?

valeu,
Luiz

Hrm...not the best answer, perhaps. But the best I can do:

Use the Military Advisor (F5) screen - it allows you to see where all of your units are. It won't show you which are awake or asleep, but it WILL remind you of what you have (that perhaps you haven't seen recently).

If anyone else has a better solution, please speak up.

Hi all, the question# were working great until this place got overflooded. So sorry I can't pin a question # for this one

Are there advantages/disadvantages building more than one farm/mine/barracks/villages within a City territory? Do we need jungle and forests?

What does it mean that your units go on a strike?

Two-part question, eh?

First off, regarding tile improvements, this is too complicated to deal with here, but yes, you can and should build more than one farm, mine, or cottage within each fast cross (there's no such tile improvement as a barracks--that's a building). How much of each is the complicated part, and there are threads here in the forum (and endless debate, be warned) dealing with that.

Second, do you need jungle and forests? Not necessarily. Forests can be used for chopping to hurry production, of course, but the price is that you lose their health benefit, so it's a judgement call; expansive leaders can chop with less fear than others. Jungles in the fat cross are just evil. They are unhealthy and hide grassland which has much better uses. Now you might be thinking of using the environmentalism civic which benefits from the forests and jungles, but it's one of the weakest of the civics and I only use it if I'm desperately suffering from insurmountable health problems in the late game.

ok, another one.

how do I set a military gather point?

for instance, let's say i got 20 units spread all over the map, and i want ALL of them to gather in an especific point/city/tile. how do i do that?

Hi, I'm on my first Civ 4 game, nobble level, and I ask you to give me a help on the following questions:

1. Is there a way to stop the game showing me enemy units when I rest the mouse over enemy cities?

2. Everytime I build a military unit, I get a popup asking me what to do next. How do I set the game to keep the same production in cities where I'm building military units?

3. Is there any kind of cost for upgrading units?

4. Is there a way to make units look smaller?

Thanks in advance and sorry for so many basic questions.

1. No
2. Double click on city name, and Alt-Click on the unit you want
3. Yes, in :gold:.
4. Download the Blue Marble Scaling Tool (second link on this page)

And, dude, you have GOT to change that Avatar, it is also Thunderfall's:worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:

Do you need Open Borders to have trade routes with the civ in question's cities?

Thanks, ggganz.

I just don't understand what the game makers had in mind when changed this. An absurd that makes no sense. It became much easier to conquer a city now since you easily know how many and what kind of units the enemy has in it.

And regarding the avatar, it refers to my favorite Civ unit. :)

@Wardog

1)No. Most people seem to prefer it this way, and it seems reasonable that you should have some idea whether you're fighting two units or 20.

3)The cost is in gold, and is equal to 25 + 3*(the cost in hammers of the new units - cost in hammers of old unit).

Yes.

Cynical, to me most reasonable and fun was to buy that information - for a big price like on Civ 3 - or to send a spy to get it - like in Civ 2. The enemy army localization is the most important military information in an estrategy game, and I disliked the change.

I like that change. The change I dislike is how artillery works. If I save Sid's life before Civ5 is made, I'll get the game exactly how I want it.

Another way, (though not quite what you want ) is to say select a sleeping axeman anywhere then hold the ALT key and click the wake button. This will wake ALL axemen EVERYWHERE, and may help to find where you mislaid troops.

I could help with putting his life in danger first! :joke:
