Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hi there, what's the remedy for when one of my cities is unhappy due to overpopulation? Thanks!

There are many ways to deal with this. Check Cabert's article, Ways into Happiness. (The title makes him sound like a motivational speaker, doesn't it?)

Maybe this link can help you: To those with d3dx9_32.dll problems. It's the top sticky in the Technical Support forum.

And of course welcome to civfanatics! :band:

There are a few wonders that give bonuses to buildings of your state religion: University of Sankore, Sixtine Chapel and others.

I wonder what happens when you switch your state religion or adopt free religion after you built one or several of these wonders?

They remain the same, (keep working for whatever state religion you have) except for the apostalic palace in bts. That one is set to the to the state religion under wich it is build. And will only work when running that state religion.

If you adopt Free Religion, IIRC, you lose the benefits of those wonders, as you have no SR, and they only enhance SR religious buildings.

If I have those wonders it means I tend to avoid SR as long as possible. In BtS, where Computers is now a completely optional tech (it obsoletes several of the wonders you mention), I might avoid FR completely.

 I know this is a typo but the second sentence does not make any sense :crazyeye: :p

Whoops, sorry, I meant "FR", Free Religion...

Error 1706 pops up during install of the civ 4 v1.74 patch as install aborts. Then Civ 4 cant be uninstalled. I get Error 1706 if I use the Firaxis site patch or (after system restore/destructive recovery) if I use the BTS install which has Civ 4 patch 1.74 on it. I'd like to just bypass the patch and install BTS without it doing the civ 4 upgarde to v1.74.

The error 1706 message tells you it can't install the patch, it stops midway and doesn't unroll its progress either. SO as it is now:
either I only play with Civ 4 as it comes off its disc and no BTS at all OR
I can have BTS as it comes off the disc with a messed up version of Civ 4.

I never tried directx_jun2007_redist.exe as some suggest but I did try the directx_aug2007_redist.exe version which may be wrong, I dont know. The August 2007 version had the d3dx9_32.dll file but you had to tell it where to put it, they dont tell you, and I wasnt sure so I put all the files from that package in the Windows\system32 folder because most of the DirectX files were there, but it didn't help or hurt as far as I could tell, I still fell into what I just described above. I never tried putting anything into any Civ file, which Civ file would that be, there are bunches? Also if there is a file(s) to add, I need something I can download to a flash and take to my game PC which has no internet connection.

Again though, I'd be happy bypassing Civ 4 v1.74 upgrade if I could only install Beyond the Sword without that disc dumping it on me.

Just found this about solving the problem with the latest DirectX
suggesting directx_jun2007_redist.exe :

Quote:
Any folder you want... For example, you could make a new folder and extract the files there. Then you open that folder and run DXSETUP.exe in there.

I didnt know about DXSETUP.EXE and someone else said that the EXE file appears in the folder you send the files to. I never tried this.

(Wonder if the August DirectX9c would be best?)

Gonna try it now>>>>>>>

That's my own silly kind of humor.
This reminds me I didn't update the article for BtS, same for it's little brother about health.
One day, I will :mischief: .

By the way, I just love it when people link to my articles :D .

hello to the posters here. Your posts help, thanks.
Sorry I have no answers.

Any advice from anyone on this would be nice:
To help install the Civ 4 v1.74 patch I ran the June DirectX package as one poster suggested above (although an August version is out), I cant do the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer because I don't have the internet on my game PC but that way was used by others with success which makes me think it is still a DirectX issue (could be wrong). This time I did the DirectX properly by going into the folder afterwards and executing the DXSETUP.exe file
Then I restarted the PC, made a restore point and installed Civ 4 and then restarted again, set another restore point, restart, and ran the v1.74 Civ 4 the patch. This time it went better but not perfect.
The patch progess bar went 99% of the way across and then Error 1706 popped up again and said it could not do the job, it had an OK button so I clicked it, then it continued for a second and the familiar colored Civ 4 install screen came up and said update was complete and gave me a "finished" button. The program runs, and it thinks it is upadted.

Wondering if I should uninstall or maybe revert to that restore point I made, then run the August version of DirectX and do the whole thing over.
Or maybe just say forget it, it's good enough. Not sure if in the future during game play I may have issues and by then I'll forget I had this Error 1706 pop up to begin with.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Im on HP Pavilion, Athlon 64 X2 (W) 3800+ 2.0 GHz, Microsoft Windows XP with SP2 , GeForce 6150 LE , Realtek ALC 888 chipset,
system less than a year old with latest drivers and June DirectX installed.

I see that you've posted the same in the technical support forum. It's probably the place where you're most likely to get an answer. I'm not sure if your installation was completed correctly now.

If you don't get an answer anytime soon, then maybe you should start a new thread in the technical support forum so that your problem gets a little more attention.

Good luck.

Hi Folks, sorry if this has been asked and answered, but doing a search on "runtime error" Produces massive ## of hits. I posted this in the tech support forum, but no reply as of yet... I know a BUNCH of you are techies, so maybe I might get an answer here...

This has been happening with occasional regularity, but now has hit "critical" - at least on one game.

This is how is usually goes:

Playing along.... I've got a LOT of the map discovered. Very late in the game - mid-to-late 1900s. Usually when I am scanning around to decide what to do next, all of a sudden, the program dies. There is an EMPTY dialog box with a button (sometimes it says "OK"). Press that and get another dialog box. This one is wider and not as tall. It has an "OK" button. Almost never is there any text in either of these. Once or twice, there was something about graphics and "reducing" something or other.

The desktop is "hashed" at this point, but that clears up by dragging the "my documents" folder around...

Usually, I can restart from the last save point and get through to the end.

Last night, similar scenario, although not as far along in the game. (Early 1600s). Got a Blue Screen (not the BSOD, as there was no text) and had to reboot. Click on the auto save game and Civ4 started up. But immediately upon bringing up the map to where I could see my game, it ended, with the usual 2 empty dialog boxes.

Help??!!

I am fairly PC literate, but not so PC technical. (I'm a mainframe geek.) So, I will look up and modify stuff - if you explain how. (Not "change your color settings", but "go to ____. Click on _____. "Change the xyz to abc"...)

Thanks!!

Sounds like a graphics card problem - the popup probably says "Failed to Allocate Graphics Memory" and tells you to reduce the graphics settings.
Try the following two: ingame click on Advanced -> Options -> Graphics and use lower graphics settings (there are a few checkboxes).
Open CivilizationIV.ini in your My Games directory (actually in that directory there are subdirectories for each of Vanilla, Warlords, BtS whatever your poison is ;) - and in those directories you find a .ini). All options in there are commented and some say may preserve memory - set those to 1.

Is there a way to activate the 'HTML code' down in the bottom of the posting rules box?

If so, would this fix the prblem of me not being able to put any screenshots or select any icons in the Advanced post page? or is it to do with my computer?

P.S. What about spoilers? I can't open them.

You have to allow java scripts in your browser for all of these (at least for this site).

I have heard that if you bye BTS you get al of the civilisations and every thing ells exept the Scenerios in warlords, is this true?
