Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hello Civ Helpers!

How do you tech trade with the AI?

For instance: If I have Horseback Riding, can I give him Animal Husbandry? Or, If I have Iron Working, can I give him Mining or Bronze Working? Aside from the fact that you don't want to give him an advantage down the road.

What I keep thinking is that if I trade an old tech with him, that then doesn't allow me to use the current tech that was built upon the old tech.

How can I get DalesCombat Mod and the Varietas Delecta mods to run at the same time? Ive tried messing around with the CivIV.ini as each one can be run, but i cant figure out how to get both going at the same time

if i auto start civ4 with one (before i get to main menu) then try to load the others it dosent work

i tried variations of this
Specify a Mod folder (Mods\Varietas Delectat), '0' for none
Mod = Mods\Varietas Delectat\DalesCombatMod

cant get it to work :(

does it make a difference when putting mods in the My Doc / My Games mod folder or the one within program files?
Easy. Open the folder where you installed Varietas Delecta and copy everything INSIDE Assets (not the assets folder itself) into My Documents\My Games\CustomAssets. Then delete the Varietas Delecta mod from the Mod folder. Then just run Dales Combat Mod.

Can't believe nobody thought of this! :crazyeye:

You don't lose techs when you trade them. :crazyeye:

I moved a stack of full-health chariots, axemen, swordsmen and catapults into enemy territory. When an enemy axeman attacked this stack, it targeted a catapult and destroyed it. Is there any reason that the system identified my catapult as the best defender when it clearly wasn't? I checked the enemy axeman and he didn't have any siege attack bonus either.

EDIT: I may have figured it out: the enemy axeman had shock and combat 1 promotions, so my axemen were not considered the best defenders as they only had combat 1? Does the chariot bonus against axemen only happen when the chariot ATTACKS but not defend?

Catapults and axemen, both without promotions would be equally able defenders against an attacking enemy axeman. The bonus against melee from both axemen cancel eachother out and both units are strength 5 units. If you pick the promotions for axemen and catapults smart, then you can make sure that axemen are the most capable defenders against attacking axemen.

Chariots aren't the best defenders as they only get their bonus against axemen on the attack. Axemen have a bonus against swordsmen as they are melee units.

Exactly - axes have bonus against melee units (i.e. other axes), so that cancels out. Shock gives a bonus +25% versus melee units, and this more than offsets the +10% strength from combat 1 on your axe, so the catapult becomes the best defender. Unfortunately.

Thanks Roland and 6K Man. The bottom line is that I finally figured out that the chariots bonus against axemen works only on attack.

Is there anyway to manually designate a defender in a stack? In this situation, I would have designated a chariot as a defender, because it would have been the cheapest unit that can suck away a turn from an enemy unit, win or lose.

Not really, other than by selecting terrain for your stack. Units that might normally be the strongest in a stack (like Cavalry in a stack of Rifles, or Horse Archers in a stack of Axemen) won't defend in forest or on hills, because they don't get the forest/hill defensive bonus.

Of course in your situation, the Chariot will almost always be the weakest unit in your Axe stack. Not much you can do about that.

I just did this and it dosent seem to be working :(
Does dales combat need to be installed in the \MyGames mod folder? cause it defaults to the Program Files one
i copied everything inside Assests and simply pasted it into the custom assests like you said and i told it to overtire all or whatever

did i do something wrong? do i need to change any xml files to run them both or something?

; Custom XML and Python from user folder are not loaded
NoCustomAssets = 0

do i just change it from 0 to 1? or do i have to reword it?

nope dosent seem to have worked
do i now have to install the other files into Dales Mod?
wait what did u mean exactly?
i changed the other to 0 and changed custom art to 1?
do i have to install dales mod into the MyGamesMods folder? since thats where i took apart the Varietas and put it into the custom assest?

BOTH AT 0!!!!!!!!!

i just tried both at 0 and it didnt work
i tried that awhile ago too when i first moved the Varietas files into custom assest and deleted its mod folder as previously suggested
might it not work because dales combat mod dosent recognize the new unit files/arts or something?

I think i must not have properly taken the files from varietas mod folder and pasted them into custom assests properly

this is what the original varietasdelectat instalation instructions said
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

- Important: first update your BtS to 3.13

- Delete previous version

- Extract v3.2 into BtS mod folder (unpack with 7zip: http://www.7-zip.org)

- Load the mod either in game with ADVANCED, LOAD A MOD, Varietas Delectat
or set Mod = Mods\Varietas Delectat in your CivilizationIV.ini
to let it load with each game start

Sorry, I really can't help you anymore without risking conflicts between files. You'll have to manually make sure that there are none of the same files in both of the mods, and if not, you can make them both in the same mod folder.

I suppose I should have Mentioned that i installed Blue Marble before any of these? hehe im starting from scratch now cleaned up changes to the programs files and totally deleted the MyGames bts folder and had it produce a new one
