Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Ok guys, this is driving me nuts. I'm very new to this game, so bare with me please.

Right now, I am Augustus Caesar/Roman Empire, Continent, Medium Sealevel. Well I've covered a large area of the map, but now I'm bordered in. I've got a Lighthouse, Harbor and all that good stuff up. I built the Carvessel or whatever you call them, and i'm trying to load up some settler's on board to take over an unoccuppied area. They won't board the ship. How do I get settler's on ships to transport them to new areas?

@Jay79: Make sure the vessel you chose isn't limited to what it can transport. Some vessels can only transport certain units, while others are more general-purpose transports.
 
It's the Caravel. It says it can carry, Scout's, Explorer's, Spies, and Great Peron's. LOL. Well, I guess that's why I can't get a Settler on there huh? lol. Dang, my bad.

Ok, well I guess this is my next question. How do you get a Settler over to an island to build? Or to conolize and Island? Right now there is some stone I'm looking at on an iceberg looking thing.

I'm not entirely clear what you're talking about. Are you talking about a mod that you downloaded? Usually, mods have an installation guide made by their creator which explains how to install them. The best place to get answers to any problems that you might encounter is the thread in which the mod was introduced to you.

The earliest transport vessel, the galley, can transport settlers but it cannot enter ocean tiles outside of your cultural borders. The caravel can enter ocean tiles, but it cannot transport settlers (or workers and military units). The galleon is usually the earliest unit that can transport settlers over the ocean. In the expansion pack BTS, the Portuguese civilization has a unique replacement of the caravel named the carrack which can transport settlers (and workers and military units) over the ocean.
 
The 18CivEarth game is under "play a scenerio". :) If you are saying that you want to play a custom game with 18 civs, then you will have to go into "custom game" and change the status check down boxes in the top part of the screen to active and/or AI, then pick civilizations you want to be included in the game or just leave them random.


And I just got my first backstab in Civ IV. I made a new city on an open patch of land on a new continent, and despite having open borders with Rome, Julius Ceasar decided he didn't want it no more and attacked my little city there without any warning. The decleration of war came AFTER he attacked and razed my city. :mad: That's OK though, I bribed my pal Napolean and my Mistriss Catherine to rid their continent of the stain of Ceasar. :lol: :scan:


Hey speaking of, what are the best ways to acheive diplomatic victory? The reason I ask is because I have great relations with every one, but they do not have great relations with each other and are always asking my to cancel trade deals I have with others, and asking me to go to war with civs I am really friendly with. How do I handle such dellimas to acheive diplomatic victory?

Ok, I'll work on one of those. I know what your talking about. Then I guess, you just select the unit (Settler's) and then click on the Boat?

One more thing: I went in and put a lot of the ancient era soundtracks onto the track list of the modern era, but have discovered (at least it was more noticeable with songs that are unique and don't sound like random clatter) that the game only tends to cycle through about three or four songs before repeating them. On a rare occasion, they will play something else, but it is a bummer because I would like to listen to all of them and it keeps things from being too boring while moving all my troops around. Is there any way to make the track selection more random and complete?

Is there any proper Earth (ie. as it appears on a globe) maps so I can at least play on a proper globe? I hate not being able to play on a proper globe!
 
Okay, I've got the BtS expansion up and running. (First impression: Oooh! Complicated!) I do not understand why I can't found a corporation.

EDIT: Nevermind! In the BtS general discussions somebody else asked the exact same question, and the answer is that I need to switch to Free Market.

Therefore the question becomes, which of the two Engineering corporations should I choose?
 
three possible explanations:
- you don't have the tech "corporation"
- you are running state property
- you are running mercantilism and don't have the unofficial patch

Mining Inc is superior to Creative Constructions. It's best spread to small low-pop/low-hammer towns, keep it away from your big cities.

And don't spread it to the opposition.
 
Hi!

I didn't want to start a new thread, and haven't been able to find information elsewhere.

What I'm looking for is a place or document that shows the game mechanics behind the game. For instance:

1) How does culture work in detail? When 2 or more cities cultural borders clash, how is the culture calculated? What is the rule? Does culture longer away from the city count less, or what is the percentage?

2) What are the chances for introducing a new Religion or Corp into a city?

And much more....

If I'm ever going to play on the high difficulties (Immortal and Deity) such knowledge is a must, but isn't very available.

Could anyone help me out here?

I've never noticed this lack of randomness, so I've no idea how the problem could arise.
 
I don't know about the Globe question so I'll have to leave that to the experienced members.

How do I rush a wonder with a great person? Is only a certain type of great person able to do this? I looked for the button icon with the GP in the city that was building the wonder but I didn't see anything about rushing the wonder.

Also, is there a limit to the amount of wonders you can build? When choosing what to build, if I hold the mouse icon over a wonder it says something like "national/world wonder: 1 left".

Only Great Engineers can rush wonders. :)

As to a limit on the number of wonders, there is no limit on world wonders but there is a limit on national wonders. This limit is 2 national wonders per city (or 5 national wonders per city on a One City Challenge game on the latest BTS patch).
