A unit usually can be upgraded to several units. If you can build all of these units, then you can't build the original unit anymore.

A maceman upgrades to a rifleman and a grenadier. Once you can build both of these units, then you can't build macemen anymore. Riflemen are enabled by rifling, grenadiers by military science. There are no resource requirements to these 2 types of gunpowder units, so once you have invented both technologies, you can't build macemen anymore.

By the way, having a few CRIII grenadiers in case you encounter riflemen defenders can be pretty useful. So you might want to create both CRIII grenadiers and CRIII riflemen.

How do I get worlds that were like In the Vanilla CIV 4 game?

EX: Im not sure if Cylinder worlds are Left to right, Or up and down. (For the North/south West/East poles)

Is it possible to enter the Worldbuilder and edit the world on multiplayer hotseat? My wife and I play at home and we want to create and edit our own world, and then start the game.

Or is there a way to edit the world and then use that world in a multiplayer game?

A few of my cities became unhealthy, and I built all I could to increase health, but after a while there were no things available to build to increase health and the cities were still unhealthy. Any advice on what to do?

Also, not sure if this is anything important, but how far apart should I build my cities? I see the AI creating some really far apart at times, but then I see some that are on an island that only has 1 tile to begin with. So I wasn't sure what the best conditions are for building cities and how far apart they should be.

Thanks.

  1. There are some other options for increasing health. If you don't have access to all the resources that improve health, you could look into trading with another civ to obtain them, or settling a city near them. If there are jungles in the city's BFC, get rid of them. You could adopt the Environmentalism civic if you have access to it. You can also bee-line to some of the techs that increase health (Genetics, Future Tech) or that will give you access to other health-improving buildings. You could also declare war and capture the Hanging Gardens. For other ideas, see Cabert's Ways into Health
  2. They can be as far apart or as close as they need to be. You found cities for many reasons. Generally you want them to be well-rounded economic engines, with some specializing. But you'll found some cities just to gain access to a resource or to claim a strategic location. These latter types of cities may be closer to your larger cities just because the map dictates their position. Keep in mind, however, that the further a city is from your capital, the more expensive its maintenance will be.

hello, Im very new to this game and I have a quick question about trading with other nations...

Last night another nation offered me some gold for "Priesthood" My question is when you make this kind of trade, do you have to re-research Priesthood? Or is it a case of once you have it, you have it forever, and the other nation is just kind of poaching off it for money?

Thanks!!

Once you have discovered a tech, you cannot lose it. The AI is just trying to learn this technology as well. You trading "Priesthood" would just teach it preisthood and give it access to the benefits and units that tech provides.

Same goes if you were trying to aquire a tech from another civ. ;)

In "Custom Game" instead of "Play Now!", there is an option. You can also have a donut shaped world, where it wraps around both sides.

Start in Single Player, and save the world INSIDE the WorldBuilder as a WorldBuilderSave. Then open the save in Hotseat.

Well, Wich one was the up and down donut and which one was the vanilla-cream one?

Don't remember the name of the first option (I think it's "Flat"), and that makes no wrap. Toroidal makes N/S wrap and E/W wrap. Cylindrical makes only E/W wrap. I think there is one map script that makes it N/S wrap only, but I can't remember the name. I think it has the word "Axis" in it.

K here is 1, i ben playing for a long time and feal dumb posting on this newbie question bord but,

What dose that out of sync warnning mean in multiplayer. It seems do do nothing but make you restart the map and make anoying red letters. Dose it mean anything is horibly wrong or can it be ignored?

Out of sync (OOS) errors are supposed to mean that two or more players have one or more game files which do not match (this is for all computer games by the way). For example, one of the .XML files for one of the players might have been modified. It's basically there to prevent cheaters.

God only knows why but even players with completely unmoded games sometimes get the OOS errors at the start of games. Usually the players with the different numbers next to the name need to leave and rejoin the game. In my experience this is usually almost half the players. It can be rather frustrating to do that, especially if for some reason one of the players has problems rejoining the game and so never re-appears. But generally speaking a game restart is not necessary.

Also, the frequency of OOS errors seems to depend on which patch version you run. I think for memory the 3.13 patch (the latest) has a fairly high incidence of OOS errors - something a lot of people complain a lot about.

If you declare war on Zara then Churchill will declare war on you. A defensive pact is more binding than a peace treaty.

However I'm not sure what would happen if Churchill were not allowed to declare war on you. For example, Churchill might have done a trade with you in the last ten turns.

This is exactly the situation he's proposing, since he has a peace treaty with churchill :)

Is it? If it's a peace treaty for a set number of turns sure, but if it's just the default "we are at peace" that you have for most parts of the game (unless you trade often) it's pretty clear cut.

For the sake of clarity we should probably call the type of treaty you're referring to as something like a "conditional peace treaty" or "binding peace treaty".

It was a "here's all my money plus 22gpt so you'll stop the genocide" peace treaty, rather than the cease fire agreement. You were right tho, when I DOW'd Zara, Churchill DOW'd me, and wouldn't discuss any terms until I stopped warring on Zara.

Only a forced deal (demand-request for help, peace treaty at the end of a war) results in an unbreakable peace treaty for 10 turns. Normal trade deals still allow normal war declaration.

I don't know if a defensive pact can force you to break an unbreakable 10-turn peace treaty.

Ah, ok, now I'll know. Thanks for reporting that.
