Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

If they're available for download then no, but it's nice if you include a credits text file if/when you release your mod to the public.

This may sound like a dumb question, but can I use units created by other people to create a scenario/mod, if I can, do I have to ask them?

That is what they made them for, they want people to use them. Look at the scenarios and maps and you will see lots of creators listed in the credits as designers take units from many people.

This is going to sound so dumb... Does the cost of science go up because of land size or because of level?

Talk about a newbie question

Yes, the world size and level are 2 factors that determine tech cost.

Interesting.

My question: How many defenders per city do you recommend? I usually stick with minimum 2, maximum 4, depending on how valuable the city is to me. So usually on average 3. With the latest technology in their hands, of course.

Simple answer: As many as you need. In most cases, by far, you don't need any defenders at all.

Aw shucks - both of them ... ah well.

so let it be written; so let it be done.

Yes, but for me, usually I find myself forgetting about military and just building improvements. When I need to war, I will ramp everything up, but in between, it's easy for the AI to build up their forces and take a few cities.

I seldom have a city captured by the AI, but then I'm usually out-teched unless I get the Great Library, even so I also out-culture them.

Try the Republic "outer crust" defense. Republic gives you a good builder gov and no MPs in any cities, so you put all your units on the edges of your empire (ideally in all of the cities the AI can hit on turn 1 of a war), and leave center unguarded. Your concentration of force allows you to maintain a smaller army and use it where it is most needed. When Marines and/or viking berserker are a threat you should put defenders in each coastal city as well, so that a transport out of the fog doesn't take your biggest port, lol.

Also try "area defense". One or more of your best defensive units in a crust may not be enough, so place some fast movers in central located cities with road connections to your border cities, then they can rush to reinforce and counterattack wherever they are needed. Cavalry work wonders for this before rails, they can defend a huge border are and concentrate easily when needed.

Hi! So since I recently started playing and obsessing over Civilization III after a long absence, I've found myself on this forum more and more for information. I finally ran into an issue I couldn't find answered anywhere so I finally came out of the shadows and registered.

I'm running Civ 3 on Windows 7 in compatibility mode and for the most part it works fine. There's the occasional crash, but not too many issues. Up until recently I could use the editor and make maps and play them no problem, but after the game crashed hard towards the end of one such game and I had to uninstall/reinstall the editor maps no longer show up in game. Whenever I go to load them the only two maps that show are the standard earth and huge earth maps that are default.

I've tried looking through this forum half a dozen times but I cannot seem to find a similar issue discussed. Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

PS: I downloaded and installed the last patch v1.29f. Issue came before this and persists despite it.

depends on the gov you're using, but I'm normally in republic, so I defend the outer cities/borders/border cities.
Some fast unit's maybe in case of surprise landings or something, but inner cities are not defended. No need.

Fortunate7, two things come to mind. First is that maybe you deleted all the folders during the uninstall. Second is that if you install with admin once and without the other the saves are in different locations.

Admin uses x86 and non admin uses User folders. Search for *.sav or *.bic for saves and maps. BIX for PTW and BIQ for C3C.

I usually keep units in my inner cities (not as many as on the borders, but still quite a few) so I can reinforce whatever position is necessary. Of course, in archipelago maps ALL places should be garrisoned.

Is it possible to mod the game so you can start in a different age?

For example starting @ the medieval era, instead of the ancient one.

Could someone tell me the difference between a "World Map" and a "Territory Map"? I've never been able to see any difference but I'm not overy concerned with details
