Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Yea, but I see a General in the fray and the spear has a lot of promotions. Maybe civ6 needs to add back fire power? :D Do not want to forever be doomed to losing tanks to spears, do we?

I guess it depends upon your goal. They said the goal was to make it so civs that had fallen behind would still have viable units. The rng allowed obsolete units to win combat sometimes. In that case they accomplished what they set out to do.

I just never agreed with the concept and in fact winning a battle with osolete units did not make those nations viable. It made most players mad. They were working on addressing that, but decided that they had to stop and put 1.22 as it was at that point.

As they knew and we know, that let many bugs still in the game and the combat system with some issues. It was all about money.

I remember that they would not even fix the city view to use the new wonders, eventhought players offered to make the art. Just needed to get on to the next project and stop spending on C3C.

The developers must have noted our complaints. In Civ 5 they're telling us in advance what a spearman will do to a tank:

Please do no post such imagery! Combining Civ5 with 'decisive victory' on a green background is too much for me. :cringe:

Spy question, after failing to plant a spy, how long do you need to wait?

I totally agree. I honestly scratch my head when a game sets out to make advancement it's primary function, only then to restrict the worth of advancement, and their excuse for doing this sounds like codswallop to me. Could you imagine playing an RPG and having your level 25 Warrior in +10 Armour losing a fight with a level 2 Goblin. I suspect the game would be a laughing stock.

Yes, around that time a vast quantity of games were released with so many bugs that they needed umpteen patches just to make them playable. However, I have civ3 complete and Spearmen still beat Modern Units, and if it's still happening in civ5 then I doubt it has anything to do with 'bugs' but rather a reluctance/inability to alter their spurious RNG system.

The city view is the most laughable part of the game for me. Such a great opportunity for screenshots, such a massive fail when you check it and half your wonders aren't there. Combined with zero animations for Wonders and the reduced impact of many Wonders and then combined with virtually no Worker upgrades or Farmland improvement I'm surprised the game received game of the year. Addictive yes, a backward step in many areas though and it does feel like the game was provided... incomplete.

Spy question, after failing to plant a spy, how long do you need to wait?

IIRC, you can try again the next turn with a lowered chance of success, but you need to wait ~5 turns to get back to your original chance. There's a thread or something that discusses it ....

Edit: Eh. http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/strategy/espionage_missions.php
If a spy plant fails you will get a flag saying so. You cant plant a spy when flagged. There is a chance of 1/3 for the flag to disappear each turn. Failing other spy mission, does not trigger the flag. You can plant a spy the same turn your spy has been exposed by a failed mission.

Not sure if there's any way to tell if the flag is up or down, though.

Wait until the next turn. Any other attempts that same turn will fail. A flag is set that makes any other attempts fail. Each turn, there is a 1/3 chance the flag will disappear, so you might be able to plant a spy the next turn. If the flag hasn't disappeared, you won't be able to plant the spy, but you won't be any worse off than if you'd waited another turn, because the chances of the flag disappearing will be exactly the same. If you don't have much cash, you might wait a couple of turns, though. It will slow down getting the spy planted, but it will cost less, on average.

See the article in the war academy on espionage missions for lots of useful information.

Yeah thanks I worked it out, basically you can try each turn if you are not concerned about the money. In the game I used it I was making over 2k per turn so this wasnt an issue.

Ok, I'll ask but this question is about more general thing I think and it doesn't depend from civ version.

Depends on the system. Most Crits are just xY damage (Y varies by system and weapon; double damage seems to be the most common), although some House Rules I've seen change that. One of the most common for D&D, for example, is rolling 3 Natural Twenties gives an instant kill no matter what you're fighting - so yes, using that House Rule, you could kill that Great Wyrm Red Dragon with your Bare Hands, even if you're a Level 1 Commoner who has to worry about being killed by Housecats.

Hello, I made a scenario mixed from several others (map, units and such). Since its 133 Mb already I was wondering where is the best place to host it. Thank you for you support.

 They don't call it fantasy gaming for nothing!

haven't been able to play anything apart from Solitere in the last 6 months or so . ı tried to draw a map in the Vanilla editor , to be ported to Conquests later on but the computer kept crashing opening any single file . Have an old machine and the Hard disk had only 660 MB or so of free space . Is this the probable reason ? Keep bringing new stuff and it is only just ı am cleaning up and moving many files to the external drives , should aim at least for 2GB ?

maybe ı should have asked in a cleaner language . My machine used to run the game and editors easily if slowly at a time when my empty space was above 1GB at least . Does it run out of memory or whatever when constricted ? ( Like when Adobe Reader takes more and more space ; my computer has 384MB of RAM , and shows 1450 total [of ı don't know exactly what] and the machine will block itself when approaches that limit , you can't even turn it down .)

Civ III asks for a minimum of 300MB hard drive space, which is very modest for nowadays standards.
But memory problems should first show when playing big maps, and in the later stages of the game.
When you already have a problem when opening up the editor, then... I don't understand that, that shouldn't take much memory at all.
Have you got other problems with your computer, perhaps?
