Is there a chart that shows the upgrade chain for military units in standard C3C?

That is, is the the cavalry the top end of the mounted units, or can you upgrade them to mobile armour when you get the tech?

Thanks in advance,

Stunner :goodjob:

Cavalry is the end. Tanks are built from scratch and are upgraded to Modern Armour.

Warrior --> Swordsman --> MDI --> Guerilla --> TOW
Archer --> LBM --> Guerilla --> TOW
Spearman --> Pike --> Musket --> Rifle --> Infantry --> MI
Catapult --> Trebuchet --> Cannon --> Artillery --> Radar Artillery
Chariot --> Horseman --> Knight --> Cavalry
Tank --> Modern Armour
Fighter --> Jet Fighter
Scout --> Explorer
Galley --> Caravel --> Galleon --> Transport
Ironclad --> Destroyer
Cruiser --> AEGIS

Those are all the ones I can think of right now. Can't even pretend to know the ships that well, though, nyo.

I'm a Civ II junkie making the jump to 3, but I can't find if there's a way to play on a real-world earth map with assigned starting locations for all Civs (i.e. French start in France, Americans in North America, etc.) The starting locations seem to be random whenever I choose to play on the pre-loaded earth maps in Complete. Any advice on how I could play this way (which was my favorite mode in past Civ games) would be appreciated.

Thanks for the guide, I'd better start building tanks.

You could try using a world map from the Maps forum.

Popular ones are Rhye's 180 x 180, el mencey's superhuge 362 x 325 and Marla_Singer's world map. Or you can find a different one for yourself. :)

You can set starting locations in the editor by right clicking a starting location icon (the blue circle - you get SLs from the "Select Overlay" button), and selecting Reassign and then the civ you want.

Welcome to CFC! :)

I'm currently playing el mencey's, and it's fantastic -- I would recommend it. I'm only worried about hitting the max city limit before I finish off my "national boundaries". Rhye's is good too, but a little small for my taste. Most of the European countries don't have a chance on Rhye's unless they get to Africa pretty fast -- there just isn't enough room for all 31. In my limited experience, the Iroquois are pretty dominant on that map.

Ok, I'm new to the site, and I wasn't sure whether or not to ask here or start my own thread, but here goes:

I just went and installed the v1.22 patch for C3C; I've been using v1.00 ever since I bought Conquests when it came out. However, when I try to play the game, I get the Windows "[insert file here] has encountered a problem..." message, with a certain file named "~e5d141.temp". I clicked the link for the data report, and I saw that the file "C:\DOCUME~1\chduroch\LOCALS~1\Temp\175_appcompat.txt" was included in the report. Does anyone know what this means, and how I can fix this problem? I tried rebooting the computer to see if that would fix it, but it hasn't. The only thing I can think of is that I need to install the previous patch before installing this one.

No, you don't need to install a previous patch before installing the "final" one (this should be valid for all the Civ3 version AFAIK). The problem lies elsewhere. Did you tried some standard remedies, like uninstalling and reinstalling the patch? It seems that something went wrong during the installation of the patch. More things to try: scandisk, run an antivirus, run a spyware removal tool etc. Can't say if it will solve the problem (probably not) but at least you can cut off some possible causes.

EDIT: some people call those laptops "Stinkpads" :D

Stinkpads, eh? I don't have an optical mouse, and it can be a pain moving units diagonally, but I've gotten used to it (heh, keep in mind I've removed that portion of my post).

Well, I suppose I should mention that while I was installing the patch I got a message having to do with "locked readme files" or something of the sort. I had the option of preceding with the installation or doing something about them; I don't remember quite what it was (even though I just did this like a half hour ago). When going to uninstall it (no, I didn't try it before you suggested it, so now you know ;)), I'm getting a similar message about locked files; this time the filename being "Civ3Conquests.exe". I'm afraid of messing up my files so I'm not too sure how to proceed from here. I'm tempted to just ignore it, but again, I don't know what the outcome will be. I know next to nothing about this sort of thing, unfortunately :(

EDIT: Yeah, I just went and ignored it. Normally, that's what I would have done in a heartbeat, but hey, if there's help available, why not ask? ;)

EDIT2: Arrgh! No, reinstalling it didn't work; I'm getting the same error message. When I first went through it I got the locked message more than once and I checked an option to have the computer not ask me again about it, and I'm thinking that it's been set for good (this time through I didn't get the message).

Civ3conquests.exe is the executable of Conquests. It is reported as locked file. The patch substitutes the original executable with a new version. Hmmm...

I know little of WindozeXP (i avoid it like plague) but I smell user privileges here. Did you tried to install the patch as a normal user or as the administrator? You need to be administrator, i think.

Can you get war weariness from having a ship/boat in an at war civs cultural boarders? I just want to spy him out, but don't want any WW.
Also, can troops heal in an at war civs cultural boarder, at sea?
Thanks in advance.

You can only get war weariness from either attacking units or being attacked, I think.

As for your second question, no, it works the same as on land, before you get Battlefield Medicine. Actually, I think the only place you can heal at sea is when you're in a friendly port.

As for my initial problem...I got it to work, eventually. No, it didn't have anything to do with user privileges; I restarted the computer again and it started up just fine. I'm not sure how that happened, though, since the first time I tried this it was no go... :confused:

And, I actually have another question, which arose as I started playing v1.22. When I was in the World screen where you choose what you want your world to look like, I saw a text box at the top of the screen labeled "Seed". What's this all about?

I read a little on this thread to try and understand it a bit better myself. I found it by searching for map seed .
Basically I think if you start a new game with identical settings (climate, AI civs, age...) and type in the seed, then you will get an identical map, but maybe with some resources and starting locations a bit different. Let's say you wanted to replay a game but had no 4000 BC save. If you knew the seed and settings, which you can extract from a later save, you could 'replay' a game.

I'm not sure if it ever got figured out. We might be waiting for the Academy article on world/map seeds.

You may have read that things stay the same if you use the same seed but I usually ignore the random bumber seed and have never got the same map twice..... Some maps have lots of res & lux.... some don't.... never had the same map with the same seed... I only change the seed when I'm trying to play a HOF attempt...

Hi Guyz

Quick question - my first military action on my initial turn of my very first pbem game was moving some ships within range of an airstrip and bombarding the aeroplanes parked there with both naval and air units :D ... no damage :mad: to the planes or the tile :blush: ... I was informed by a friendly lurker that it was not possible to damage these units ... a glitch in the programme ...

My question - is this a problem with C3C, the Pacific WWII Scenario or pbem?

There was a recent thread about airfields, but I believe they can be destroyed by bombers and aircraft, but NOT by pillaging. I'm not 100% sure though.

So, you can just bomb your own airfield to destroy it, right?

Guyz i don't know if you can ... if it is empty maybe ... but when there are planes sitting on it ... AFAIK they are indestructable and consequently so would be all improvements ... well that was my experience in the pbem WWII Pacific scenario game ...

Has anyone playing C3C (with latest patch), ever been able to bombard an airfield or damage air units on an airfield with a bombard attack?

I just set up a test with C3C 1.22 with an empty airfield in your, neutral, and enemy territory, and an airfield with planes in your, neutral and enemy territory.

You can bombard and destroy any airfield that is either (a) belonging to you, or (b) belonging to someone else AND it doesn't have units in it. I could destroy the airbase in enemy territory with no planes in it, but I couldn't destroy the airbase in neutral territory with enemy planes it it, nor would the planes of theirs lose any hit points. I guess you have to conquer enemy ones with planes by force, and then bomb (artillery might work too) it to get rid of it.

Another interesting thing of note. You can destroy your own airbase with planes in it, and then the planes stay on the tile - but there is no airbase!

Time for a new thread, this one is at 1000 replies..
