It's up to 2 squares out from the de-forested square, except for 4 squares: NN, EE, SS, WW. (viz. A "5-tile Square" minus 5 tiles = 20 tiles that can receive the 10-shield Bonus.) :)

Sorry, but I'm not clear on this. Where "f" is forest and "c" is city, is it fxxc or fxc...the 2nd square out being an x or the city?

I've read the article in the War Academy about which city gets the shields when 2 cities are equidistant from the chop, but didn't quite get that either. I only do a chop when I'm sure what city will get it or when I'd be happy with either one getting it.

Sometimes I can be really dense. Sorry.

Hopefully the following diagram will help :). The shields go to the the city on the tile with the lowest number:

Aha! Thank you both Padma and Dianthus!!! So any choice between 2 towns begins in the 1st n/e tile going clockwise and no city can be farther away than tiles 9 through 20. NOW I've got it. :D

Edit @ grille: Good way to look at it. Thank you. :)

unless one of the cities can't use it for whatever reason (i.e. building a wonder)

.....Or Building the Palace.......Or Building Wealth.....Or It's Another Civ's City(I think)!! :mischief:

Thank you Dianthus.....I was hoping you would put in your diagram........it's very confusing otherwise.........so don't feel bad, gma. ;)

And BTW, the Forest square does NOT have to be within Your Borders for you to get the Bonus.......And you CAN'T give the Bonus to another Civ's City (I think....again). ;)

I wasn't clear on that either, so thank you again. :)

While I'm on a learning roll here, another question... Over the past 8 months or so I've seen posted many times that you get a "trade bonus" in Republic (and Demo too, I think). Um, I know that a bonus is something in addition to a base, and I know from playing that I have a higher income in Republic than Monarchy or Despo. But WHERE does the word "trade" come in?. Is it better trades with the AI? or is it simply a synonym for commerce and accrues per roaded tile? or something else entirely?

Seems like the more I learn, the more questions I have.

On each tile that gets at least one commerce, you get another. For example, an unroaded grassland will give 0 commerce. But a roaded one, since it gives a base of 1 commerce, will give 2. :)

edit: Too slow, Turner. Better luck next time. :p

Trade, in this case, refers to Commerce. The bonus is, for every tile that is producing at least one commerce, it will produce one more. Which is why it's so very important to have your worked tiles roaded when you're in Republic or Democracy.

Thank you GA and Turner. It's funny how a person can have a small niggling question in the back of their mind and just not get around to asking because the games are playing fine. :mischief:

@gma: So, when you switch from Despotism to Republic, some of your tiles may get an extra TWO commerce generated (Because of Despotism's "Commerce Suppression" if >2 commerce).

That's why it's often a good tactic to switch to Republic (Or Monarchy) BEFORE commencing your Golden Age! ;)

Remember, you can only get the 10-shield bonus from each eligible square ONCE PER GAME! ;)
... once per ELIGIBLE town!

Reasoning if a forests square can service more than one town ... is the above true then ??? :goodjob:

Any given tile on the map will produce 10 shields from a forrest chop only once....

So.... plains tile > Plant forest > chop (10 shields) > Plains> Plant forest> Chop 0 Shields....

also Forrest> Chop (10 shields)> Grass> Plant forest> Chop (0 shields)

So in theory you can have 200 'bonus' shields in any given city thru chops MAX.

Does this "one-chop-only" rule apply on AI planted forests as well?
I´m not sure, but I think I observed once that an AI planted a forest on a tile I already had chopped once, and when that forest became part of my territory again, I chopped it for a second time gaining 10 shields again.
Might well be that I am suggesting nonsense, but is there a verified answer to my initial question?

What happens if you chop a forest next to a Wonder-building city, so the shields are wasted, and you replant it and chop again. Do you get the shields?

I don't believe the shields are wasted, I think they go to a more distant city not producing a wonder. So if you replanted the same tile once the wonder city was done and chopped...no shields.

Edit: Disregard...after looking at Dianthus's post, I don't think I understand this situation either.

this question deals with conquests... is it possible to play a save that has the latest patch when you don't? where can i download the patch? I have to do this by floopy, so are there instructions for doing that?
