I'm sure this has been asked before, but since the search feature is disabled, I have no way of knowing. :/

Anyway, what are the advantages of Democracy over Republic? I have always just assumed they were there, since I remember using it all the time in Civ 2, but now that I really look, I can't find any except for improved worker speed. The only other differences I see are worse war weariness and more unit upkeep (on average). Is there anything I'm missing?

Democracy also has lower corruption, and is immune to propeganda :mischief: That's it :) -- I haven't been this Goverment for a long time, as I don't see the point in it anymore. It doesn't suit the way I play...

Btw, you don't need to search for questions in this thread to see if they've already been answered, just ask.

Edit: Eman, in C3C some artillery units have the Lethal bombard ability, so you're not totally right ;) (i'm disregarding the fact there's a C3C quick answers thread)

Democracy doesn't have increased productivity, or Science, and he already mentioned worker speed :p

A Democracy is also immune from propaganda. The reduced corruption can be significant if you have a large empire. For a religious civ it can be worth while to shift into democracy during periods of peace, if they last for 20 turns or so, then revert to republic when the bullets start flying again and cause war weariness to rise. I agree though, that for a game style that focuses on military victory Democracy is usually a no-no. Regardless of war weariness, by the time it arrives you should either have won or be well on the way to winning.

Also Democracy has increased worker speed, productivity, and science.

GB answered to this correctly. I'd like to add that I think you are confusing the increase in science and stuff with a decrease in corruption. Less corruption means to have more commerce allocated for science or gold (ot luxs)

Are "Happiness-Score" points calculated BEFORE or AFTER your civ's end-of-turn cities' machinations?

I know that gold-per-turn score is applied BEFORE the EOT machinations begin. :)

I wouldn't know, don't use the editor too much. Maybe someone else can pick this up?

I only know that rep and dem both have +1 commerce in each square already producing
commerce. The trade bonus you mentioned should therefore also be in the republic government. Isn't it?

One extra gold per turn for every tile that's already generating at least one gold per turn. But that's true for Republic as well, so they both have the same trade bonus compared with Monarchy or the others.

2 questions:

1. Is it clever (or un-clever) to get the governor to manage citizen moods? I think its very comfortable as the CD never appear...

2. what about automated workers? i've heard that its much better to manage them manually, but doesn't the computer managing them to the ultimate?

Thanks

1. You could do that, but don't let them manage production! It's not unclever, but not really clever either. You *could* do it manually ;)

2. The computer doesn't manage anything to the ultimate! The AI does some pretty stupid things, and the way it manages automated workers is one of them. If you're really lazy, just stick to "road to" and the like, but never fully automate them.

It depends on your attitude about micromanagement. By controlling the citizens yourself, you can usually get a better balance/focus of food versus production, depending on how corrupt the city is, what your purpose is for it, etc. To understand the true power of disabling governors, I recommend Bamspeedy's Babylon Deity Settlers in the War Academy. The article illustrates the power of some good tricks.

The computer doesn't pile them right like a human can, it also irrigates grassland in despotism when the shield penalty makes such an improvement worthless. If you do want to eventually automate, then you should at least wait until you are out of despotism. When you do automate, use Shift+A so the workers don't change any of your preexisting improvements. For the best game though, you should never automate. In addition to the previously mentioned article you should also check out the Academy link to Cracker's Opening Plays. With manual workers you can control when forest chop shields go to a city, greatly speeding up early expansion (granary rush, etc).

Micromanagement in general can mean a much better game, but it takes a lot longer, and for some players a lot of fun out of it.

thanks!

i have another question about the scenario editor:

i have made up some new units with changing the rules. E.g. i made the explorer into Immortal Scout and changed the attack etc. But one thing doesn't work: I changed the look of the unit also, into the look of an Immortal. but when i try the game, they look like explorers! the same thing happened to the other units which had a changed look. what must i do to change their look??

sausnebb:
You can't just change the little character in the editor UNITS tab.

You have to create a new file in the Units folder (Copy the Immortals file and rename it Immortal Scout). I think you also have to change the entry in the editor that says PRTO_Explorer to PRTO_Immortal

A friend of mine just has GOTY CivIII (no PTW or C3C), and doesn't have the options to move all units in stacks, and doesn't have the option to turn on Advanced Unit Controls.

Were those functions added later in an expansion, or did he muck something up? Forgive my ignorance, my first version of CIVIII was gold, so I started with PTW.

Thanks!

I think stack moves were added at version 1.29f. I don't know what's delivered in GOTY, but if it's lower than that he can download an updater from Firaxis. As a general prnciple I always check the publisher's web site for updates on anything I get on a CD, as CD publishing and stocking delays mean most CD software is out of date by the time it's delivered.

Ayani, you definitely want to patch up to v1.29f - here. This'll solve your friend's problem.

can it be assumed that on an archipelago map with 80% water, u can generally expect to find your self on an island alone?
