I have tried searching for a good write up of settler factorys, but
Icould not find one. Any pointers? In particular I am interested in
the conotatinos of not having a river to build it on. Can you still
get a 4-turner going with 1 cow on grassland (without building an
aquiduct)?

If you have some extra time on your hands you could read the thread on Civ3 - Stories and Tales> Civ3 Succession Games. GK2 - The Training Day Experiment. They go into quite a bit of detail there on the 4 or 6 turn setteler factory. Hope it helps. Lots of other good info there too. The whole thing is about 15-20 pgs. long. I'm currently about 1/2 way thru it.

Try Bamspeedy's Tutorial: Babylon's Deity Settlers in the War Academy. Probably the definitive work on the subject.

You might also want to check out cracker's Civ3 Opening Plays for an in-depth discussion of what to do wih your workers in the early game.

The size of save files (SG forum) will vary, depending on map size, difficulty level (higher difficulty level saves are generally larger because there are more units to keep track of), and how far advanced the game is.

Typically between 40K and 200K, I would say.

I have a military alliance with India against the Arabs. India signs a peace treaty with the Arabs before the 20 turns of the alliance are over. Can I now immediatly sign a peace treaty with them too without suffering a rep hit for breaking an alliance?

Is it possible to enter into a military alliance without actually being at war? That is, can I get an alliance with civ A against civ B before I declare war on civ B?

Thanks in advance.

If you are no longer in an Alliance, then signing a Peace Treaty cannot affect your Rep. ;)

I have never succeeded in doing so, but I have heard reports from other posters here that they have done it....

I have done this, but only by trading 1 or more techs in exchange for the alliance. It's much cheaper to make the deal when you're at war, but of course you're never quite sure if any of the other AI's will be prepared to ally with you!

Thanks for all the advice. There is some good reading there.

This articale is brilliant. A real interesting perspective of the thought proccess involved in those early decisions.

Thanks.

My thanks to Padma and Dianthus for the responses to my question about alliances. I would like to know that my potential ally will join me before I actually get into a war, but I don't want to have to hand over Motorized Transportation to do it--especially since my "ally" will assuredly sell it to my enemy. But it's nice to know that it's at least possible.

NOT Easily! (Under Despotism.....BUT, Easy under Monarch, Republic, Democracy) :)

You need 5 Bonus Food (the hard part) and about 7 bonus Shields with 4/5 people in the city; 8 shields with 6 people.

Having an Agri civ (e.g. Mayans) + Cow on grassland will get you 5 Surplus Food if your city is on a river or a lake.

Net, Net: Build the city on a river or lake and make sure you can get 5 surplus food for 4 people in the city. :)

EMan, you can't operate a size 5-7 factory without a river unless you've built an aquaduct. Of course, that might not be such a big deal if you're going to wait for Monarchy/Republic before you set the factory up!

Yes, you're right.....I should have applied my stuff to a 4-6 person factory!....above post corrected! :)

I guess I just DON'T start games UNLESS my capital city is on a river or lake! :)

By the time you hit Monarchy, isn't a lot of the best land gobbled?

That's why you go to war and free the oppressed land that just happens to have those strategic resources and luxories that you need!

==That's why you go to war and free the oppressed land that just happens to have those strategic resources and luxories that you need!==

War before Chivalry or better yet Military Tradition, and without strategic resources already aquired, is such a slow and messy business. I like to concentrate on peaceful empirebuilding and scientific advancement until Sipahi come online, at which time everyone dies. Because of my late onset warmongering, it's important to peacefully grab as much good land as possible.

Of course, switching to Monarchy early has the advantage of reducing the number of turns in Anarchy, which I'm told partially depend on the size of your empire, but if you a. don't start crazy citybuilding until you have Monarchy and b. are unable to build settlers during the turns of Anarchy, you could lose out on the best land.
