I was playing last night and decided to try a Toroidial map, since I have no idea what that is, and I just could not get the game to say "Hey look, you circumnavigated the globe!" Instead Gandhi got credit for it some 20 turns later. Is there a trick to this on a Toroidial map? Also what specifically is a Toroidial map in Civ 4?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that I know what it *is* -- in addition to the map wrapping around from east-to-west, the map also wraps around from north-to-south. You can sail off the top, and get to the bottom.

I don't know if that makes a difference in the circumnavigation bonus, or not. IIRC, you need an unbroken set of tiles that wrap around from east to west. You can get it by sailing, trading maps, or some combination. I have messed it up by zig-zag'ing my sailing ships so that a single row of tiles is not revealed through the fog, even though my whole path is revealed.

If one selects Fantasy map with Low sea-level, one may
walk, ride or drive across the top and the bottom.

That is correct.
