Quick Questions and Answers

Dear all,

This is my first post here. I have read all pages of this thread and played my first game so these are my questions.

1. I arrived to year 2052 and the game continues!!! How can I check that Time Victory condition is active? I'm pretty sure it was when I created the game. :(

2. How can a great merchant be used to get a lot of money? According to the help window I just have to send him to a CS I'm not at war with. I tried it to ALL CS available in my game, but to no avail. :( The option is not highlighted. Can it be a bug?

3. Just after entering into modern era all my warehouses, harbours and stuff like that was lost in all my cities!!!! I had to rebuild them all from scratch. Is it another bug?

Thank you very much in advance.

1. Check the victory progress advisor, available with the "Additional Information" button in the upper right (next to the social policy button).

2. When the merchant is in the territory of a neutral or better city state, a button to establish a trade mission should become available in the actions bar on the lower left, above the unit picture. He cannot be out of moves.

3. Never seen this happen. If you have a save (or autosave) prior to this happening, try and re-create the bug. If you can repeat it, post to the bugs forum, with attached save, and see what people can come up with.

Firstly, thank you very much for your help. ;)

1. Check the victory progress advisor, available with the "Additional Information" button in the upper right (next to the social policy button).

I can't believe it. I seems I didn't activate it

2. When the merchant is in the territory of a neutral or better city state, a button to establish a trade mission should become available in the actions bar on the lower left, above the unit picture. He cannot be out of moves.

I didn't know it shouldn't be out of moves. :p Solved.

Ok. Thank you very much again.

Every unit has 10 hit points, but this just seems to be a relative number. How is this calculated?

It's not a relative number. It's exactly 10 hit points.

I'm confused. If a Warrior attacks a Giant Death Robot, it will hardly do any damage. If a Warrior attacks another Warrior it will damage it significantly. That's why I'm asking here how the damage 1 hit point represents is calculated. (I'm not looking for a formula; just a description of how the concept works will do.)

And another question: How can I use mods in LAN?

Thanks for the help, btw.

I don't know the exact formula, but generally units with higher strength inflict more damage. So it's not hit points that are relative, but damage inflicted. Probably it depends on the strength ratio of the units, so, for example, if the attacker has 10 strength and the defender has 5, the damage inflicted will be the same as when it's 100:50. Also damaged units deal less damage (unless you're Japan).

Thanks for pointing that out. The combat strength seems to influence everything and the damage is indeed that part that's relative. I quickly created a map with some test units to see how these things work out. With units at full health, you'll live another day as long as your strength is greater than half your opponents strength and vice versa. If not, 10 damage will be done. Terrain is always king, though, and influences a lot. I guess I like the system. :-)

Anyways... another question: Anyone know if it's possible to use mods in a LAN game?

So I've had it with all the bugs and now I'm autosaving after every three turns, as recommended. The question is, how do I pick up an autosave and start playing it? I've found the file on my hard drive, I just don't know how to start playing the autosave.

How does the bonus from the Hanging Gardens work? Does it instantly add +1 to the population in each city when it is built, for a one time effect like Great Library?

I've played a lot of games, and built it several times, I just haven't paid much attention.

I'm sorry to quote myself, but I'm still really really curious about this. Should I post a thread somewhere maybe? I didn't think it was worth it's own thread, but maybe.

Since there is no demo of the Mac version, I have no way of knowing whether performance on a MacBook Pro will be better running the Mac version or the Windows version via BootCamp.

However, I read at http://zmarter.com/game-s-news/civilization-v-for-mac-to-officially-support-steamplay-still-coming-tuesday.html that purchase of one version entitles the buyer to the other version, which would solve this problem. How do I get both versions? Do I have to buy Civilization V from Steam, or do I just have to have Steam installed?

Any advice on getting both versions welcomed, as well as any info on performance differences between the two versions.

When you buy the game, you register it with Steam. Then, if you install Steam on your Windows machine and run it, you can install Civ 5 for Windows. And if you then install Steam on your Mac computer, you can install Civ 5 for Mac.

I don't know what is done about installing from discs, but you can certainly just download and install it on whichever machine.

Basically, owning Civilization 5 on your Steam account gives you access to Civ 5, no matter if it is Mac or PC.
