R.I.P. Stormrage

Wow, it was a suicide?
Then i guess the cheerfull facade was a show?

I still cannot believe he killed himself, but if he did then in reality no one here knew anything about him.

And now i am having second thoughts about dedicatingthe russian set to him, since if he killed himself, essentially he was fooling us all, at least partly.

I don't think it's really appropriate to speculate about that here. Apart from anything else, someone who seems cheerful but inside is not is not necessarily "fooling" people or being deliberately deceptive; to think that they are shows not only a lack of empathy but also a lack of insight into the complex ways that the depressed mind operates. It is perfectly possible for a person to be genuinely cheerful and genuinely miserable at the same time or in quick succession - the symptoms of depression even change according to the time of day. It is also a fact that every one of us has different aspects of our personality that we display in different situations and with different people; I'm sure, in particular, many of us are cheerful with some people, or in some places, that we consider a friendly refuge, even when we do not feel cheerful in other places. And these are just general facts without touching on the specifics of a particular case about which we know nothing at all. It's not the place of anyone here to pass judgement on this matter.

The fact of the matter as far as we are concerned is that we do not know what was going through Stormrage's mind at the end of his life; in particular we do not know whether it was something temporary or chronic, or how it related to the rest of his life, or how it related to his online life on this site. No-one can really know these things. Let us then take Wittgenstein's advice, to the effect that what we can't speak about, we should remain silent about. The testimonies on this thread indicate that many people here knew Stormrage as an eminently and genuinely positive person on this site, who made it that much brighter, more cheerful, and more welcoming. The least we can do to thank him for that contribution is to remember him in those terms. I don't have any doubt either that that is how he would wish us to remember him, or that that is how I will remember him.

This reminds me a bit of the novel The lost souls, by Nicolai Gogol. Although he wrote two parts, the first being cheerfull, and the second being dramatic (and more real, since in it he was trying to fix Russia's problems) the people chose to remember only the first part as the real novel.
But that, to me, is at least problematic. I can accept that others can decide to view things in such a way, but it is not easy for me to do so.
Anyway i agree with you that this is not the place to discuss such an issue.

Hear, hear.

I'll throw in a wild guess: you've never had a friend who has committed suicide?

And for the same price, I'll throw in another one: you are willing to share your deepest, darkest secrets with someone you know from Civfanatics?

World is not black & white. Especially World Wide Web.
I have had a couple of friends who have killed themselves. Both occasions shocked everyone who knew them, because nobody had even thought of such events being possible. Detecting a suicide candidate from a crowd of people is not that easy.

And now i am having second thoughts about dedicatingthe russian set to him, since if he killed himself, essentially he was fooling us all, at least partly.

Being cheery on a forum, when you are feeling bad, is not fooling. I'd say it's an attempt to make yourself feeling better.

That is very sad...
no one should speculate on anything about this; as there are many ways things like this can happen, even to the everyday average unsuspecting person.
There are MANY prescriptions that cause suicidal behaviors... including a pill that I took to try to quit smoking. After 3 days taking this non-smoking pill, I stopped, because it made me feel like I lost my soul (literally), the worst feeling I've ever had in my life. Once it wore off, and I was back to normal, I found out hundreds of regular folk had commited suicide from taking this stop smoking pill over a period of time; in an attempt to improve their health.

So without knowing the facts, which we will probably not ever know, we should not jump to conclusions about anything.

Tom

We should all shut up until we know how and why he died -for real, no rumours, no nonsense. Did anyone here know him IRL? No.
Let's remember the best part of him as an ever-present, ever-cheery taskmaster who took this forum seriously, unlike many others. Period.

how do you know it was suicide Delta?

wow just wow

My information came from a reputable source that used to frequent these forums. If he said it, then I can be 99.9% sure that it is true. I'm not going to give up my source because I don't want to drag him into this, but just know that I would not post something like this about someone just to post it. Stormrage was also a friend to me and I wouldn't dream of marring his memory with something like this if it wasn't true. We need to remember him as the cheery person that he was, but we also need to remember his death as a lesson so that we won't let this happen to other people in our lives. Anytime someone commits suicide there is always someone that feels guilty because they noticed certain behavior and decided to do nothing. It was probably someone in Stormrage's family or a friend outside of the forums, but someone probably noticed. Use this as a lesson, and if you know someone that is exhibiting suicidal behavior, then don't be afraid to say something to that person, because trust me, you don't want to be that guy that could have made a difference and chose to do nothing.

Am i the only one who knows that most people commiting suicide are people acting on impulses and NOT people who've been depressed for years ?

However he met his end, I will always remember him as the cheery green guy who always had an encouraging word.

:goodjob: I agree. :)

I'm not a moderator, but I think it would be best if we all please keep this thread as a memorial of how much he meant to us, rather than the circumstances of his death. Certain subjects (without mention of specific names) would be best discussed in an 'Off-Topic' thread, so we can keep this thread with positive thoughts of a good friend. :)

Jesus. From time to time I tread on morbid ground and ask what would happen if someone were to die, but woe the day the subject transcends the hypothetical. There are precious few people on this site I'd consider friends, and do I ever regret not having the opportunity to at least acquaint myself with him. There was something, some aura about him such that his mere presence in a thread could lift my spirits.

He may have passed on, but he has left a legacy that ensures he will never be forgotten.

I couldn't help but shed a tear when I read this thread.

I haven't posted in a while, and now I see this thread.. :(

Stormrage was always there to give me a thumbs up on all of my units, and I will remember him always for his cheerfull and happy smiley filled posts..

I'll miss you, Stormrage...

One year ago it happened...
