I don't think it's really appropriate to speculate about that here. Apart from anything else, someone who seems cheerful but inside is not is not necessarily "fooling" people or being deliberately deceptive; to think that they are shows not only a lack of empathy but also a lack of insight into the complex ways that the depressed mind operates. It is perfectly possible for a person to be genuinely cheerful and genuinely miserable at the same time or in quick succession - the symptoms of depression even change according to the time of day. It is also a fact that every one of us has different aspects of our personality that we display in different situations and with different people; I'm sure, in particular, many of us are cheerful with some people, or in some places, that we consider a friendly refuge, even when we do not feel cheerful in other places. And these are just general facts without touching on the specifics of a particular case about which we know nothing at all. It's not the place of anyone here to pass judgement on this matter.
The fact of the matter as far as we are concerned is that we do not know what was going through Stormrage's mind at the end of his life; in particular we do not know whether it was something temporary or chronic, or how it related to the rest of his life, or how it related to his online life on this site. No-one can really know these things. Let us then take Wittgenstein's advice, to the effect that what we can't speak about, we should remain silent about. The testimonies on this thread indicate that many people here knew Stormrage as an eminently and genuinely positive person on this site, who made it that much brighter, more cheerful, and more welcoming. The least we can do to thank him for that contribution is to remember him in those terms. I don't have any doubt either that that is how he would wish us to remember him, or that that is how I will remember him.
