R&L01 - Monarch Space Race

Roster -
RowAndLive -
Detlef Richter - just played
rrau - (swapped)
jb1964 - UP
Misfit - On Deck
DJMGator13 -

In another game he's in with me, jb posted that he will be out of pocket until the 26th. If Misfit can play now, maybe he can swap with him.

@Misfit - nope I didn't know that. I just know we had one this summer and it happened at the same time I was looking for an avatar, so it became my avatar. (I was actually browsing NASA's site looking for cool pictures when I saw their article posted about blue moons)

@Misfit, This would be the forth SG needing tending tonight.

G01 - Game w/ rrau should be quick 'cause these girls are vicious warmongers
BNH02 - Smaller game but needs careful attention
BNH01 - Monster conquest game w/ ~500 units on a huge map in the Modern Age.

Please swap with me! :help:

I think that's fine, I doubt jb will get through all 3 other SGs.

Turn 8 or somthing? (1150AD)
I pick-up Nationalism as the free tech and trade it to the Sumerians for Steam. Hey that workerd pretty well we got 2 free techs at the turn for the price of none :)

We have no source of coal on the mainland, we do however have one on the island to the north. I move workers to the hill to start a road. Should be hooked in a turn or two.

I start on Medicine at 80% due in 4

Hand Down Report:
I messed up the Dates as I was playing so I decided 1150 was a good even numer to stop on. I'm really stumped where I mussed up. :hmm:
The celt's have no local source of Horses, Iron or Saltpeter hooked up or visable on their mainland. They obviously are not smart enough to put a harbor in Ratae on another island that has iron hooked. I think they need to be booted off the face of the planet. :D
How in the heck have we not met the evil witch yet? That seems very strange to me.

I did not trade anything the last turn but we can bankrupt the rest of the world (100 or so gold) by selling all of the techs we have. I'd trade and gift them all into the new age unless we plan on attacking them (the Celts for example) They might pick up a tech or two in this age (hey we can always hope can't we?)

We can pick up furs from the Arabians
We can pick up spices from the Greeks

We need to get ToE for the Tech Jump - It is 600 shields and 12 turns away if we can get each required tech in 4 turns. We could switch out JS Bach (600 Shields) for it in P'yongyang as it is due in 19 turns. We could probably shorten this with rails to time it better. We do not really need Bach's for happiness purposes as we are pretty happy right now.

>>>THE SAVE<<<

@Misfit, great write-up. My goal will be to make mine as spartan as possible.

Just finished turns onr GN01, BNH01 and BNH02 so I'll work this tomorrow night. BNH01 is done for me since it'll take the next leader about 5 turn to finish off this bloodbath.

Sounds good. Nice trading on the Age jump.

Our rounds have been ending on the 70's for some reason, so you had the number of turns correct (at 8). Next palyer should just grab 10 to keep us on the 50's.

Next player would be jb or myself. Up to jb because of the swap with Mistfit.

EDIT: crossed with jb. Go get them.

Very nicely played, and well-written!

Thank You.

I think we can still eek out a decent date out of this one.

If:
We concentrate on expansion to get more beakers
Concentrate on cash
Only research required techs

In another game Gator mentioned delaying building the ToE until expensive techs like flight are available. Is that something we could try here? I always beeline right to it and try to time a prebuild to snag it ASAP. With the snail pace of the AI in tech tech we might be able to put it off until the end of the Era to get better techs. What do you think?

I think in this game we should be able to delay the TOE to coincide with the Modern Age. The key will be if we have a big enough tech lead to delay building the Wonder while we research the rest of the IA techs.

Interesting strategy. I always use ToE for AT and Electronics. But then I do that to trade the lower branch techs for all those that I don't have. That's not the case here.

It will be a trade off between the cost of the techs we can get for free and the value we realize from getting IA techs earlier. Sort of a net present value calculation. What IA techs tech have then greatest compounding potential?

I think I would get it early, grab AT and Elec. with a Hoover's prebuild. This pumps up our ability to build stock exchanges and other improvements to improve the cash flow.

Either way should be doable in this case. I also usually go the early route, although I did do a delayed ToE recently. Hoover's is a must for this game, and the earlier the better, but I'm all for saving on shields. Should we vote?

I vote for an earlier use of ToE to get the compounding benefits of Hoover's over a longer period of time.

We have no coal. So we need to either gift the VIK up to Steam or attack one of the 3 Civs with coal while they are weaker (no Cavs). ARB & MAYA each have 1 source of coal and the MAYA source is close to an iron (Palenque can build the Iron Works). VIKs have 2 sources but lack the technology so they can not trade it to us yet, plus one of theirs appears to not be hooked up currently.

We've got 3 good Wonder builds going right now and we are battling the Celts for 2 of those. So I'm not real keen on trading away our tech lead until we complete those Wonders. I think we need to go to war for the coal source, which helps us on two fronts. First, the coal and secondly more cities so more science earned.

On the TOE I usually build it early, but with pushing to space claiming a more expensive MA tech for free is a better way to go. We can research 2 IA techs in the time it takes to research 1 MA tech (at our current science level, bpt). As long as we can maintain a 4-5 turn research rate through the IA I don't think we need to complete TOE until the Modern Age.

Here is my take on the issue:

We need:
Medicine (4 turns)
Electricity (4-6 turns)
To get to Scientific theory (4-6 turns)

That is 12 to 16 turns that we would need to a prebuild for Theory of Evolution (600 shields) and Hoover's (800 shields - has to be a river city)

If we can get both prebuilds close by the 12-16 turns I agree that we should pull the trigger immediately on the ToE to pick up Atomic Theory and Electronics.

However if we only have one prebuild going for ToE and not one for Hoovers I see no reason to finish building ToE until the second prebuild is done. We may as well continue researching past these and delay the prebuild until Hoover's is ready to go to pick up the more expensive tech's later on.

:hmm: does that make sence? It does in my ming by that does not necessarily meen that you will be able to understand my ramblings :crazyeye:
