Known Troublemaker
Inherited Turn, 1750AD
Russia already has Robotics! Was this known? It's clearly at a monpoly since we have no chance at all of purchasing it, and I have no desire to try to steal it unless absolutely desperate.
I end the war with Portugal, picking up 60g...I don't think there's any happiness factor from it and the more things we have control of the better.
I sign rop with Mongols, and then send a taskforce of settler + units to sit on top of the Mongol uranium.
Note there is absolutely no intention of rop abuse here, since we are not denying the Mongols anything...the tile is fully improved and if the resource is disconnected for any reason I will certainly move off it. All we are doing is ensuring we have first claim to that resource if the Russians destroy the surrounding Mongol towns.
Buy incense from Russia for 29gpt, take a good look at our cities, and press enter.
Interturn following 1752AD: Mongols and Russia make peace...so much for the taskforce.
We complete our 9th part, and now just need robotics + uranium. Prebuilds are well in hand.
Turn 2, 1754AD: Recall the Uranium taskforce.
Interturn: Sumeria bombs Antium, and then disaster strikes:
Russia ends rop, and we are struck by lots of pollution to rub salt into it.
Turn 3, 1756AD: Sumeria will not talk yet and the Russians have begun another part. Oh dearie me, what a situation. First thing we must establish...has Russia purchased uranium from Sumeria? An investigation of St Petersburg (56g):
Can't seem to find the words. Gutted.
After getting over the shock I consider our options. Signing Russia back in against Sumeria will commit us to abother 20 turns of war against Sumeria by which time Sumeria will surely launch. We cannot get uranium from anywhere else, attacking Sumeria or the Mongols is only a fantasy. We have to make peace with Sumeria and get robotics and uranium before Russia and Sumeria can complete their 3 and 6 parts respectively. How long will Russia take to build 3 parts, given their massive metropolises, great wonders and deity discount? A couple of turns, maybe 3 maximum, I would guess. We need Sumeria to talk to us now, but they won't!
On top of all that we have to keep Russia sweet; since they are now at war only with Portugal they may turn their attention to us! I renew the lux deal, picking up 750g, and sign rop for 14gpt.
IT: Sumerian bombing destroys Antium barracks.
Russia adds the party lounge to ship (that was quick, 1 turn!), Sumeia adds casing.
Turn 4, 1758AD: Sumeria must have gained robotics because now they are at 5/5 and Russia is 8/2. But Sumeria still won't talk to us
Safely steal Robotics from Sumeria, and the prebuild is in hand. It all comes down to uranium. Sumeria must talk to us. If they do, we win. If they don't we lose. What a situation.
IT: lots of Sumerian bombing now that we are their main target.
Sumeria adds lounge and cockpit to get to 7/3.
Turn 5, 1760AD: I do not believe it. Sumeria still won't talk. I think it's all over
.
IT: Sumerian bombing, and they add storage/supply to their ship.
Turn 6, 1762AD: still alive! What is taking the Russians so long to build 2 parts?
This is turning into a joke. Sumeria still won't talk. Must be all over now, Russia has had about 4 turns to build the last 2 parts.
IT: More Sumerian bombing and Sumeria ships also approach our shore.
Sumeria adds the Chamber.
Turn 7, 1764AD: incredibly we are still alive! The Russians must have fallen asleep.
Sometimes I love the AI. Sumeria talks!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peace, dyes and 112gpt gets peace and uranium. We switch to the stasis chamber, and I put lux to 10% and pile units into Pompeii and Veii just in case. Yes baby!!!
IT: now Russia adds the last 2 parts, but our production cycle comes first so we get to launch! Thank you Sumeria for handing us victory from the certain jaws of defeat!
Woohoo!!! We did it baby! By far the closest space race I have ever seen, we beat the Russians by virtue of being first in the production cycle! It literally came down to 1 turn...that was the difference between victory and defeat, if Sumeria had not talked we would have lost.
Pre-Victory Save
Caesar, bullied by those giant AIs and humbled throughout the game, still turns out to be Caesar the Magnificent. What a game.
I have to confess, I am on a total high. I cannot believe we have won this game, we were so far behind Russia and Sumeria it seemed impossible. We were a fraction of their size, we had a fraction of their power/military/resources, and we watched as over half a dozen of our cities flipped to Russia. This is another example of how perseverance and doggedness can allow a human player to win through no matter the odds.
Has there ever been a succession game that has been so close? I remember reading RBE2, IMO the best SG played, and I marvelled at how close that was. This has surely matched it, perhaps not in quality but in the closeness of the finish.
Shall we spare a thought for Sumeria? Over 137,000 culture, a massive empire, 9 parts built but didn't win? Nah, thanks for the victory Gilgamesh!
Shall we spare a thought for Russia? How must it feel to be beaten by virtue of the order of the production cycle having built all 10 parts? Haha, up yours Cathy!
Finally, thank you very much to everyone who played...magnificent, an epic game and a pleasure to play with you. And thanks to the readers, hope you enjoyed the game.
This has certainly whetted my Civ appetite again, and there might be another SG coming soon
