I've got the itch to write some random events. I've done 3, and have ideas for 5 more, but after that, I'm all out. 8 New Random events is hardly boastworthy, so I'm asking the community to fire any and all ideas at me. I won't accept all the suggestions, but I will give suggestions on how to improve the event if I'm not satisfied. Just please follow the format I'm laying out here, to make things simpler when I'm coding:

Random Event Title:
Prerequisite Techs:
Obsolete Techs:
Other Requirements (Gameoptions, Buildings, etc...):
Main Body Text:
Option 1 Text:
Option 1 Requirements:
Option 1 Effects:
Option 2 Text:
Option 2 Requirements:
Option 2 Effects:
[You can have as little as 1 option, and as many as you need, but no more than 5 is recommended]
...
Other Notes/Comments:
Image Attachment: (256x256 image preferred. Larger will be cropped to fit)

And here is an example event in that format to get you started:

Random Event Title: Meteor Strike!
Prerequisite Techs: None
Obsolete Techs: None
Other Requirements (Gameoptions, Buildings, etc...): None
Main Body Text:Sire, a great ball of flame was observed from the sky! Our top advisors and the local townspeople from %CITY_NAME% have gathered around what seems to be the site of the crash.
Option 1 Text: Your Religious advisor begins, "This must be a sign from the god(s). Allow no one except for priests near it. We must learn what our creator wills us to do next."
Option 1 Requirements: A State Religion (any)
Option 1 Effects: Religion Buildings for your state religion cost 50% less :hammers:
Option 2 Text: "Nonsense!" Yells your science advisor. This is a remarkable phenomena, we must study it!
Option 2 Requirements: None
Option 2 Effects: Free Observatory in the city, if there isn't one already present. Otherwise, the observatory gains +5 :science:.
Option 3 Text: "What a waste!", your economic advisor complains. "This thing has rare metals, some of which have never been seen before. You could make gold by selling it to industries and other nations!"
Option 3 Requirements: None
Option 3 Effects: Free Great Merchant settled in the City.
Option 4 Text: "If your bringing foreign nations into this...", your military advisor starts, "Then we should use this new material to create weapons which the like of which the World has never seen! Who needs gold or gods when we can have other nations bowing to our knees?!"
Option 4 Requirements: Costs Random Gold, 500-1000.
Option 4 Effects: All units (now and future) receive free promotion, "OtherEarthly Powers", granting them 5% more strength. Costs Random Gold, 500-1000.
Other Notes/Comments: Re-occurring Event, but can't occur for the same player twice.

Random Event Title: Your Cousin, Vinnie
Prerequisite Techs: None
Obsolete Techs: None
Other Requirements (Gameoptions, Buildings, etc...): None
Main Body Text:Your Long Lost Cousin, Vinnie is back in town! He's "acquired" some extra cash that he needs to "dispose" of. He's offered to donate it to you, no questions asked.
Option 1 Text: Accept the Money.
Option 1 Requirements: None.
Option 1 Effects: Free Random Gold
Option 2 Text: Refuse the Money
Option 2 Requirements: None
Option 2 Effects: No Change.
Other Notes/Comments: Re-occurring Event, but can't occur for the same player twice.

(You may have noticed the %CITY_NAME% in my text. You are free to use variables like this, for religions, nation names, etc, and I'll have the event fill them in dynamically for you. )

Random Event Title: Super virus
Prerequisite Techs: Modern Health Care
Obsolete Techs: None
Other Requirements (Gameoptions, Buildings, etc...): Not entirely sure which but I would like it to be limited to some of the "liberal/democratic" civics.
Main Body Text: One of our health care facilities has been subject to an outbreak of a super-virus! Our resources are stretched and we can't be sure of the best course of action!
Option 1 Text: They'll surely work something out, after all, it's their job!
Option 1 Requirements: None
Option 1 Effects: 50% chance of -25% population in affected city, 25% chance -50% population in origin city and -25% in 2 closest cities, 25% chance of -10 health for 10 turns. In addition to this, +5 unhappiness in all cities for 20 turns.
Option 2 Text: Clearly the situation requires swift action. Close the hospital and quarantine the patients, eventually we'll find a cure.
Option 2 Requirements: Random gold, if possible equal to 2 turns of 100% commerce converted to gold. So if at 0% science I produce 100 gold per turn, this would cost 200 gold.
Option 2 Effects: 25% chance of -25% population in affected city, 10% chance -50% population in origin city and -15% in 2 closest cities, 25% chance of -10 health for 10 turns. In addition to this, +2 unhappiness in all cities for 20 turns.
Option 3 Text: Set up a military quarantine the hospital and divert the best minds to studying the virus to find a cure.
Option 3 Requirements: Smart Drugs, Smart Medicine, turns off science from your top 3 scientific cities for 5 turns. 4 turns of gold.
Option 3 Effects: 50% chance of permanent +2 health on Medical Center, 25% chance of +1 health on Medical Center, 25% chance of -25% population in origin city, -5 healthiness for 20 turns. 2 guaranteed Great Scientist.
Option 4 Text: This is terrible. Unfortunately there is no choice for us than to permanently exterminate this virus. Burn down the hospital and exterminate everyone who has been exposed.
Option 4 Requirements: 3 units garrisoned in city. Probably some civic requirements but i'm unsure as to which.
Option 4 Effects: 50% chance of revolt in city for 4 turns, 25% chance of great general, 25% chance of killing all but one of the garrisoned units. +2 unhappiness in all cities for 10 turns.

Other comments

An outbreak of MRSA! Cripplingly bad, but chance of a good outcome.

I don't have the means to crop right now, but this is a nice picture.

Looks good! If you find a good picture, update your post. Keep the suggestions rolling.

Random Event Title: Religious upheaval
Prerequisite Techs: Naval Cannon, Astronomy
Obsolete Techs: Motorized Transportation
Other Requirements (Gameoptions, Buildings, etc...): Monarchy probably, holy city in civilization but isn't state religion.
Main Body Text: Our boats are ocean worthy! Let us leave this land of persecution and explore the unknown.
Option 1 Text: Let us find out if anything exists outside our known maps!
Option 1 Requirements: nothing
Option 1 Effects: Receive 1 Caravel
Option 2 Text: There must be something in the unknown better then our current land! The quicker we leave, the better land we'll find!
Option 2 Requirements: 150 gold
Option 2 Effects: Receive 1 galleon and 1 settler
Option 3 Text: Our land is rotten from years of war and taxation and religious persecution.
Option 3 Requirements: Navigation, 300 gold
Option 3 Effects: Receive 1 galleon and 1 colonist

Other Notes/Comments: Not sure if I succeeded in my idea, but it's a play the persecution in Europe when many people migrated to the America's in search of religious freedom.

I like the general idea, but it's a bit weird, from a leader's perspective to complain about YOUR cities. I would tweak it like so:

Prerequisite Techs: Naval Cannon, Astronomy
Obsolete Techs: Motorized Transportation
Other Requirements (Gameoptions, Buildings, etc...): Monarchy probably, holy city in civilization but isn't state religion. Need at least one continent with no cities.
Main Body Text: Sire, your people are complaining about the abhorrent living conditions in your cities! They want the freedom to move and live where they please.
Option 1 Text: Bah, let them eat cake!
Option 1 Requirements: nothing
Option 1 Effects: -1 Happiness in All Cities for 20 turns
Option 2 Text: Let them do what they like, I don't need them!
Option 2 Requirements: none
Option 2 Effects: -1 Population in 4 largest cities, creates a new size 2 city on an unoccupied continent.
Option 3 Text: Fund a fleet of ships to sent unhappy or adventurous citizens to the new world!
Option 3 Requirements: Navigation, 300 gold
Option 3 Effects: -2 Population in 4 largest cities, -1 in all other cities. Creates 3-4 new cities on the new continent.

What do you think?

A lot better then the one I had :) I had the general idea just had no clue how to translate it lol

Would you have the new cities be created as fresh cities or colonist cities (a few buildings)?

With the third option, there would be some free buildings. I think the 2nd option city only will get a wall.

Walls - good idea. What about defending units? Just one 'best defender from current tech'?

climat - also good idea!

Perhaps relocate the holy city of that religion to one of new cities?
New world would be the new holy land to that religion.

Make another random event kind of coincide with that one that allows the cities to 'break away (vassal)' from the original civ ala america

If you use revolution option, new cities will be very rebellious anyway (because of factors like different religion/colony/distant location etc.), I think.
Population loss should be limited in cities which have different religions.

Random Event Title: Archduke Assassinated!
Prerequisite Techs: none
Obsolete Techs: none
Other Requirements: at least one city above 500 Revolution points
Main Body Text: Sir (or Sire, or Madam or My Lady), terrorists in one of our border provinces have assassinated a dignitary on a state visit to our country. Their leaders are rattling their sabers and making demands, and their press is calling for war. What should we tell them?
Option 1 Text: Meet all of their demands. We can't afford a war with them right now.
Option 1 Requirements: must have at least 2 cities
Option 1 Effects: Cede control of nearest city to their border and pay 20 gold per turn for 20 turns. -10%:strength: for 20 turns.
Option 2 Text: Our treasury is bare. See if they will negotiate.
Option 2 Requirements: must have at least 3 cities
Option 2 Effects: Cede control of 2 - 4 cities nearest to their border. - 20% :strength: for 20 turns.
Option 3 Text: We will hunt down these terrorists and deal with them so that they won't disturb the peace and friendship our nations share again. +2 unhappiness in all cities for 10 turns.
Option 3 Requirements: none
Option 3 Effects: -2 population in all cities.
Option 4 Text: How dare they threaten us?
Option 4 Requirements: none
Option 4 Effects: Declare war on them.

Here's one... I don't know if some of the effects are possible, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway.

Perfect! I like it. Keep 'em coming. I'm writing random events right now. ;)

Perfect! I like it. Keep 'em coming. I'm writing random events right now. ;)

Just to let you know, I just edited Option 3 from when you quoted me. And yes, I shall keep them coming!

historically most important events the game doesn't still contain are of course plagues. how one could be done via events:

Random Event Title: A Plague strikes!
Prerequisite Techs: city planning (it's too gamebreaking if plagues strikes too early)
Obsolete Techs: modern health care (replaced by super virus event)
Other Requirements: a city with size > 10, at lest 5 less :yuck: then :health: (chance increases with bad :health:/:yuck: ratio and city size), requires animal resource in vicinity or spreading event
Main Body Text: A terrible disease strikes our city of CITY_NAME. Every day we count more ill. Corpses start to stack on the streets!
Inevitable Effects: food storage reduced by factor 0.2 (so city will lose pop easier), additional +5 :yuck: +Random(0,city size/2), plague stays for 10+((yuck+5)-health)*F turns [the factor F scales with game speed. F=2 is for marathon speed](food shortage intended to lower pop size), units in the city loose up to 20% hp per turn.

Option 1 Text: there is nothing we can do about it.
Option 1 Requirements: none
Option 1 Effects: +2:mad: for the duration of the plague. city remains contagious with a 4% chance of spreading plague to a neighboring city (same civ, 2% for others) each turn, 2% to spread disease to a trade route city.

Option 2 Text: The CIVNAME people are behind this! they poisoned the water! burn the evildoers!
Option 2 Requirements: at least 10% of CIVNAME culture in the city, no medicine tech
Option 2 Effects: -1 diplomatic penalty it CIVNAME, -1 population, CIVNAME culture is annulled, city remains contagious with a 4% chance of spreading plague to a neighboring city (same civ, 2% for others) each turn, 2% to spread disease to a trade route city.

Option 3 Text: the plague is reported to be highly contagious! quarantine the city!
Option 3 Requirements: 5 gold per city size, doctors office
Option 3 Effects: +3:mad: for the duration of the plague. city remains contagious with a 2% chance of spreading plague to a neighboring city (same civ, 1% for others) each turn. no trade routes and -50%:hammers: and -50%:commerce: for the duration of the plague, plague duration reduced to 60%.

Option 4 Text: We must concentrate all efforts to find a cure for this terrible illness! Give our medical scientist all the resources they need to provide an immunization! And of course quarantine CITY_NAME!
Option 4 Requirements: 8 gold per civs all city sizes, hospital in any city
Option 4 Effects: for the affected city: +3:mad: for the duration of the plague, no trade routes and -50%:hammers: and -50%:commerce: for the duration of the plague, plague duration reduced to 60%. all cities become immune to the disease

Main Body Text (for plague spread from own empire): Despite our efforts against the plague another of our cities has been stuck by the illness. People in CITY_NAME are dieing.
Main Body Text (for plague spread from different empire): A terrible disease came from distant lands to our city of CITY_NAME. Every day we count more ill. Corpses start to stack on the streets!

Other Notes: city struck by a plague cannot be struck again.
Remark 1: instead of the modifiers/anger for quarantine the city could just go into anarchy for the duration of the plague.
Remark 2: as an alternative to option 4 there could be a tech added (for each disease, if one would implement different ones) that grants immunity after it's researched e.g. "Plague Vaccine". the prerequisite to research it would be to have at least one city that had the disease or at least open borders agreement with a civ that had this disease.

This is very minor, but "phenomena" is plural. A single occurrence is a "phenomenon".

I love the Great Plague woodcut. That drags me straight back to History lessons in school :)
