I wouldn't sacrifice mine, because I'm a selfish and cowardly bastard. I would gladly sacrifice yours, though.

Welp

Oh yes, you won't see me fight about THAT.

Odd that you spent the whole post fighting about it. The actions that I say represent a staggering ethical blindness reflect the same priorities that you have expressed in your last few posts in this thread.

Erm, hmm… it's free gold per turn.

IIRC its +1 :) in All cities on the continent as well as +10 :culture: per turn. At least in Civ 4. I dont remember what it gives in other parts :D

Isn't it +2 :) in all cities on the continent?

Dark cynical humour aside (yes, I have a VERY vile humour), what I mean is that I consider that some things are worth more than a human life, but at the same time I also find totally understandable that a person value his own life more. Because we're subjective beings.

To take a more palatable example : I don't consider that the life of one of my friends or one member of my family is OBJECTIVELY worth more than the life of someone else, but I certainly would instantly chose to save said friend or family member over some random guy I don't know. So objectively both are (probably) worth the same, but subjectively one is much more valuable than another to me.
So "objectively" I would value a cultural artifact much more than single life, but I would understand that a person would individually save his own life over said cultural artifact.

No, you misunderstand me. I agree that our society produce obscene amount of inequality, and I find disgusting that people who can throw 100 million € from their back pocket cheats taxes and bend world economy so they can get even more.
I do not agree that we should relegate preserving mankind's historical and cultural treasures to be funded only after we've fixed everything else.

I'm deliberately presenting it in my thought experiments as a resource trade-off because money (funding) is not a scarce resource. To be clear, I don't believe it actually is a resource trade-off because I think we can pretty easily do all the things.

Good luck on the hunt. I wouldn't quit on the spot. Just because they have no class doesn't mean you should do the same. You never know what the future will bring. I once told a worker of a promo that I thought was in the bag that got pulled. That was a long time ago and I learned my lesson and have never done it again. I felt really bad. It took quite awhile to regain his trust. I hope your boss learned from it.
The future could just as easily play out as @Commodore's company firing him for no reason, with no notice and no severance. I get that burning bridges is not smart but at the same time there is no loyalty toward employees from employers and the employees should not be obligated to have loyalty to their company. I've worked at places with a two-week notice policy that boiled down to:
You put in 2 weeks, leadership meets to decide if that person is important, if not, they walk you out that day. Didn't matter how that might have screwed things up for the employee, in fact there was no consideration for the employee at all. It was all about the value they thought they could extract out of that person after putting in their notice. When people started quitting on the spot as a response, management could not understand why - and got especially butthurt when valuable employees left without giving them two weeks to wind things down. It was a classic case of play stupid games, win stupid prizes. And of course when the company decided to fire someone, they just did it without giving them a chance to make improvements and definitely not providing any severance. But that's the employment world we live in now.

To reiterate, I do understand the value of not burning bridges; at the same time, people need to look out for what is best for them because employers sure as hell only look after themselves.

Still waiting for those employer tax cuts to trickle down...

I don't really care about burning with the company, but the people are another matter. As you say, since the loyalty for companies is down, it's more likely that you'll encounter those people somewhere else in the future.

And around here, if people gave their two week and got walked out, they'd prefer that because 9 out of 10 times they'd pay you for those two weeks.

Not the case the place where I'm talking about, which is why it can really screw people over.

If you do walk out, you very well could burn bridges with individual people but there's also a good chance that they'll understand why you did it, especially if you make a point to reach out to them on your last day and explain yourself. But yeah it's a roll of the dice and could come back to hurt you in the future.

Sometimes it's not the company but the department you work in, but I'm sure if you look there is probably something out there. If not, just google the company name and see what pops.

In all my years, I've never seen any reasonably sized company not pay the two weeks when they tell you to walk that day. Surprised to hear that someone didn't.

I am surprised there have not been an increase in sites that rate employers in a trip adviser type way.
Oh there is. Glassdoor and a few others are pretty decent, however they effectively take bribes from employers - you can pay them to remove unfavorable content and the way their system is set up is very open to corporate gaming.

Today's boring mandatory seminar topic is Corporate Security (or change your password stupid) and has been going on now for almost 2 hours. If it wasn't for great posters like Lex and Farmboy, I would have passed out 45 minutes ago. Thanks to all the anal people here that I may have forgotten.

Rant: My mother went into a road-rage after a stupid driver cut her off. I thought she was going to slam into another car. I don't like driving with her but I can't drive myself.

Unless the person giving notice is critical, we typically sent them off that day and paid them for the two weeks.

Part of that 9 out of 10. (unless everyone is critical)

She should get a ticket for creating danger on the road , next time make her slow down or call the cops ;) I would.

I was supposed to do stuff today. The power of procrastination is overwhelming me. Send help.
