Random Rants LXXII - What is wrong with us?

All right then. I'm too skinny, though about the right height, though Monty is way too tall and wants to be narrower. :p

This seriously annoys me.
On Thursday I have to hand in my PhD thesis.
Right now I am still waiting for feedback from one of the promotors for the discussion.
Which someone might maybe expect, but they've had everything I had written since May 1 (means in this case: Introduction and discussion. Good that they've seen the 4 chapters already beforehand, else that'd be a never-ending story)
I've sent in everything 2.5 months before the necessary deadline, so that everyone has ample time to have a look at it.
But no, as usual, everything at the last minute.
Same for the co-promotor, but he sent the stuff like already a 1-2 weeks ago. Not that hit helps, since edits are all made on the same document. And his comments are also not exactly useful.
Not sure if this annoys me more or less than the other promotor, who has not read a single thing in this whole thesis, including anything in the 3 published chapters, for which all 3 needed to have an authorship statement, which includes him in all 3 cases (yes, it's a blatant lie). In one case I know he didn't even open the document, because his name was not in the author list, and I didn't get any complaint about that. Should have left him out, but that would've resulted in a major fuzz and probably even real problems. I'm sort of not really surprised that he has not realized that he's not author on one the chapters. Lucky me.

:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: people :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:.

Being stopped by a street beggar claiming he's just a dollar short for buying a train ticket back home.
Since I work in the same building as the train station, I know he's a regular and has been asking for that same dollar ever day for the last month.
Somehow I don't think he really lives where he claims. ;) I wouldn't mind except he goes out of his way to call out people who refuse as having no charity in their hearts. It's right up there with the "blind" beggar who is magically cured at the end of the each day when it's time for him to go home.

Hah! There was someone like this outside my old workplace as well. I worked for the bus company and wore a branded uniform so it was very obvious where I was coming from and what I did. Yet, the same story.

It sounds compelling to someone who doesn't know the specifics. Tugs the heart strings. Falls a little short if they get all the details wrong, though.

When I first started working in the city, i was more susceptible to those pitches. Now I know who the real homeless ones are and which ones are the scammers. Occasionally I'll help out one of the true homeless with a contribution but mostly just give to more reputable organized charitable outfits.

Some of the beggars in my city are Eastern European women who run around with babies on their arms for the extra tugging of heart strings.

They're not homeless either, that's just how they make some extra money. Word is, there's an organized gang that sends them out there (and takes most of the money), but so far the police doesn't seem to be doing much about it. They just shoo them away from the inner city every now and then, and half an hour later, they're already back.

One of the local news stations did an investigative report and turned up one street beggar that was making almost 75K a year. He commuted into the city from the suburbs in a nice car.

I have been up a very long time and I am not thinking very clearly. Worse, I can't go to bed because I need to sleep-shift back into normal daylight hours.

"Give me your money, I'll add a dollar and walk you into the station and buy your ticket."

I almost did that once but the guy was bigger than I am (and I'm 6'3") so I figured it probably wasn't a good idea.

:eek2: Hang in there, man.

I'm sorry for not saying it earlier, but thanks to @Takhisis, @JohannaK and @Kyriakos for reassuring words.
I was having a particularly bad day I guess (not trying to make excuses though)

I'm still a bit I suppose squeamish of talking to the study councilor (who's also like student administrator), but I hope I get brave enough for when she returns from vacation lol.

I'm calling "Fake news!" If this were true, he be making an average of $40/hr. :shake:

This reminds me of candidate Reagan complaining about "welfare queens," i.e. women living on welfare, driving Cadillacs and living in mansions. After he was elected, no one ever found one.

Beware of "news" stories which want you to hate poor people.
If you think poor people have it easy, just try it. I dare you.

You need time to gather your excrement in one place, as the Amuricanians would say, and you need to make that time. Take advantage of the counsellor's vacation to really prepare for it.

The "middle-aged man speaking emphatically into a camera inside an automobile" is my least favorite media form and possibly the worst media form in all of history.

Good god man, a tad of an over reaction.
Where did I say I hate poor people? And for the record I did try it when I dropped out of school and scraped by for a living as a dishwasher.

The news story was in a newspaper that I consider a reliable source. And I also heard the story on a local new station.
The beggar was one on Michigan Avenue in Chicago which makes it quite believable.

There was a list of random stuff we needed around the house and we decided to wait until Amazon Prime Day to see if any of the things we need would be on sale. They weren't. It appears Prime Day is just an excuse for them to push 10,000 Alexa-branded products and a selection of random crap on discount. It's definitely not a site-wide sale. I've never shopped on a Prime Day before so I did not know that. Also their website wasn't usable for much of yesterday.
