There was an interesting editorial in the paper yesterday about this exact subject. You see, many colleges encourage thousands of extra students to apply merely so they can turn them away. This allows the college to say it is "more prestigious" because it accepts a smaller percentage of those who apply. So next time you get that packet saying that "<XXX University> thinks you are special and wants you; apply today," you should think twice and limit the number of applications you make.
 
I'm applying to 13 universities personally. My guidance counselor thinks I should reduce it, but I think 13 is too few. 11 of them are in the US and 2 in Canada.
 
I had such a long school day that I am like having a mini-burn out. I just don't feel like doing anything. I hardly even want to do what I am doing right now, which is browsing topics here in OT just to find that they're not interesting enough to post in.
And geography sucks. Maybe I should 'drop' it and start following physics instead.

I guess that makes sense.. But they aren't cutting the fat alongside proper grades, instead it's how many community services programs you were in! So.. does that supposed to make it prestigious?
 
Hmm...XXX University...just what sort of schools are you applying to?:D

Ordered a medium-rare steak yesterday and they gave it to me well-done...I want my red meat to be red, not brown through and through!:gripe:

Oh, and what about priorities on the sports page? Big news was that A) Colts are 7-0 this season (I like them, sure, but what else is new, really?), B) Lions are doing well also. Oh, ys, the Red Sox won the World Series. They get a small single-column item along the side of the front page which doesn't even continue inside the section. I guess it's only "just" another major tournament.:rolleyes:
 
And gandhi rules is an unique name around here! Very few usernames in OT link to Civ somehow(well, CivGeneral of course and Civrules).
 
He doesn't have any posts (or less than three, anyway), so he's not on the members list, but try typing the name into your PM To: field.

Yet at the same time, one often needs to shop around for financial aid offers and to see just how far they could stretch their academic resume. I applied to 13 colleges, myself, since I wasn't sure where I'd place, given my lackluster grades but much better SAT and ACT scores as well as a high school that still had a fairly good reputation for some reason.

I saw in a recent magazine article, in one of the newsweeklies. I want to say US News, but I'm not entirely sure on that. Anyway, high schools have tried to place limits on such applications because those poor high school guidance counselors had to write letters of recommendation to every place under the sun. Well, I never got a guidance counselor that did that, so perhaps I feel less sympathetic. Paperwork is part of the business. Forget the shiny athletic fields and hire another gopher if you can't keep up.

Now for a rant, my lower back has been spasming for the last five hours. It's pretty hard to stand up straight. Haven't had it like this since August 2005, when I was walking around hunched over because my muscles locked up so badly. Damn lumbar area....

I got lucky; made it into my safety school in December, so I could go for broke in April. Applied to 7: got in one, waitlisted at four (one eventual acceptance), and outright rejected at two. Good times...(yeah, like I should talk. It was just six months ago)

Was rejected by one (though that was a real reach, with their average incoming GPAs being 3.7 and mine being 2.2 :lol: though they wanted me to go through their affiliated community college) and wait listed for a couple others. The other ten all took me in for some reason.

Not yet. But I'm loving the Packers win in OT, I've got pizza, Dr. Pepper, and a Mickey Mantle signed photo coming to me.

And hopefully I survived. I'll tell you when I know the results. :lol:
