Random Raves 40: Happy new year

I lost my wallet on the bus but luckily an honest soul must have found it and handed it over to the driver because later the bus company texted me saying I could come pick it up at their offices. Very nice. Specially considering I had a fair bit of cash in that wallet after selling a couple of laptops.

Let's wait until you get the wallet back before patting this random person on the back. They may have taken the cash and then turned your wallet in. Unless you already got the wallet back and the cash was still there. In which case, that's a pretty feel-good story.

Picked it up a few hours ago, all the content was still there. :)
But yeah I was a little worried someone would have taken the cash before turning it in. Karmawise I perhaps had that coming. I remember one time as a kid, me and a mate found a wallet at this bowling place and took the money (wasn't much) before handing it in or something.

I think most people would expect any cash in a found wallet to be gone when returned, so it must feel great to get everything back!

When I was in Norway I was usually told that "nobody steals" there. I was careful about my stuff, but most people did indeed seem to be very passive about locking up and looking after their things. I got a bit used to just leaving stuff lying around myself.

Then at one of the mountain huts I was staying at on one of my hikes I ran across this guy. I asked him about theft in Norway, and he said that yes, what I've heard is true, but recently it's been changing a lot because of all the Eastern Europeans were moving in, and theft was becoming more of a regular reality as a result. He told me how they don't even try to learn the language, etc. basically all the stuff you'd hear from a Republican complaining about the lazy Mexicans coming in and stealing his jerbs. So then I'm like "I'm from Poland". "Oh, you're one of the good ones"

Nice guy but.. yeah. just a tad racist. I didn't hold it against him because I didn't want him to steal any of my stuff while I wasn't looking

Yeah, I think if it was only a little spending cash, I wouldn't care if that was gone. Everything else in my wallet would be a real pain in the butt to replace, and not very useful to anyone else.

"I'm from Poland". "Oh, you're one of the good ones"

Norway is certainly on the low end of the theft scale, but of course people steal stuff here as everywhere else. And yeah, "Polish gangs" are pretty much the go-to boogie-man for bigots when complaining about theft and stuff. I'm sure immigrants are disproportionately represented in theft statistic but I'd suspect they're equally represented in low incomes statistic. And if you got less stuff, you kinda got more of a motivation to take other people's stuff. That's just the way it is.

But I remember this one time I forgot my laptop on the hood of my car (I know, pretty impressive) at a very busy parking lot outside a mall for a couple of hours when going shopping. Was still there when I returned to the car! So yeah, people can be pretty decent.

Immigrants actually move to Tromsø?

Sometimes the person returning the wallet is accused of theft, when it was someone else who had found it earlier and cleaned it out, only to leave the worthless bits behind.

This happened to my friend about a decade ago. The woman called the cops on him, accused him of theft.

I wonder what he would have said if you had told him you were Canadian.

I guess we know where the next FBI crackdown squad is heading.

Enjoy Guantanamo.

I'll pin the theft at the bowling ally on the mate I was with, this guy called Catharsis..

Looks like Cathrarsis is about to get..

People might have been thinking that this is some sort of trap or a hidden camera ;)

He probably thought I was from North America.. which is true too.. But I mean in a situation like that as if I'm not going to say that I'm from Poland
