Random question about Civ IV's random seed... will it be back in CIV V?

I am a bit concerned about having it come back, as it will enable some civ's (like Germany & Ottomans) to reload barbarian fights so that their 50% conversion SA becomes a 100% conversion rate!

Of course... the same can be said of having a 100% victory rate against any unit due to reloading. Needless to say, I've never been a fan of the 'random seed.' What do you think?

so?
they wont be able to do it on multiplayer against you. And what do you care if they do it playing against the machine? it's like fearing worldbuilder on civ4

Um, do you know what a random seed is?

Specifically, you are hoping for there not to be the option of a new random seed on reload.

i don't i like to be able to get a new random seed when i reload.

I'm not a fan of the random chance in battles killing my superior units.

Would you prefer superior units to be invincible?

I'm indiferent to keeping or not keeping the random seed on reload or to let the both options to live ( like in Civ IV ). Both can be used in the same degree for cheating out a unwanted result...

It just seems weird to give a civ a special ability that only works 50% of the time. That's like giving England a 50% chance that a new ship will be created with +2 movement or the Aztecs a 50% chance that a killed unit will contribute to their culture boost.

Um... what?

Those two are not anything alike. Having a 50% chance of doing something after winning a fight means you just keep fighting more units. Having a 50% chance of something being on a unit when created means that if it's not your only recourse is to disband the unit and make another, until there is a production cost associated with combat they will not be the same thing.

Regardless, if you don't like it, don't use it. That's the beauty of single player games. What I do in my game has no effect on what you do in your game unless we're in the same MP game in which case you can simply not let me save and reload, problem solved. If, for some reason, you lack the ability to prevent yourself from using something you don't like that is definately not the fault of the game. Fortunately the game can likely be modded to at least the same extent that Civ 4 could be so people with a distinctive lack of will power can always mod those tempting options out of the game. Of course, what will prevent them from restarting the game if they don't like the way it's turning out?

Yup, it might be a drag ... but the fact is that you can weave out bad RNG results by reloading both with preserve random seed or not. The OP reason does not hold because of that.

I miss the "iron man" option from SMAC. I'm not disciplined enough not to reload otherwise.

I've always thought the whole "reload the game if you don't get the result you like" thing to be really silly. Why not just open the world builder and give yourself more units? :p

Cheating is such a loaded term...oh wait wrong thread.

I liked the Iron man from SMAC also. For some reason even if I didn't "cheat" on a successful game it just didn't seem as worthwhile as a victory on Iron Man.

I liked the random seed option because it helped when I was playing a mod and some combat happened that crashed it and with random seed option checked I can reload and not have to worry about the same problem because the combat would be different so I wouldn't get a crash from it. I know it sounds lame but it let me play games that would have not been possible to resume if it wasn't an available option.

I think either defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place, but that's me and if somebody else prefers to do that I don't really care. :)

I don't want to disappoint you, but random seed is in every game you've every bought.
Random numbers are used to put diversity in any place where it is needed.

I just never actually play, but pretend I won. It's much easier that way.
