RAT-02- Deity

I agree with Shevek with either war or GL. Have to look at the save before I decide. We should decide this before anymore is played.

You might want to check out this game by Sandman2003.
This shows how an early war can be conducted successfully.
And great storytelling, too.

Sandman2003 - Viking III (Deity)

well, I think if we don't go for GLIb, we immediately stop the build and focus more on preparing for war, the min run on lit might still net us good techs, I just hope we won't waste too much of our resources for this war.
we must raze Ottoman town due to our lack of culture, so even we build up swords and a few horses, we need to have settlers ready to fill the gaps.
I still tend to go for GLib, but then, if the rest thinks war is the option, let's start to prepare right now.

I usually don't play the vikings. I think I've only played them once before. Do archers upgrade to beserkers? What cost? Do we want to start building archers for upgrade if we can afford it? Also if we're going to attack from the sea, galleys are a must.

so, as a team are we ok to abandon GLIb and go for war once we gathered around 10+ swords and some horses. thinking about it, I would now agree on that.
Ottoman have no iron, but horses. We better hit them hard before they get too strong.

The berserk replaces the longbow, so I am quite sure the archer upgrade would work. Don't know the cost and cannot check right now.
But berserks are still a bit off. No need to build archers now, better concentrate on swords and some horses. And lets have at least 2 galleys for some transport duty.

I was originally not so keen on the early war with swords but have now changed my mind. If done well, it could be a great boost for us. It appears that the top players are mostly quite aggressive so let's give it a try.
Switch the GL to the most expensive building available, I believe that would be a courthouse.

And then just pump swords.

Maybe we can leave 1 town unconnected for a while and let it make warriors. We have quite some money and could upgrade some to swords for 60g a pop. That would speed up mobilisation quite a bit. Or we could even unconnect a town that makes 10spt and get a warrior per turn until upgrade money runs short(Bergen???). Then just connect again.

I checked the save, we can change to courthouse it will then finish next turn. as for unconnecting, we can't do that with bergen since it is more or less the connection to iron itself
ok, pump until we have 10+ swords and attack. do we raze towns or just starve them down? we can't afford to build settlers

Osman has about 4-5 times our culture. So it is either raze the towns or finish them off completely. Can we do that??
Ottos have 12 cities incl. capital. We know the location of only 8 so far. So a boat to go north is in order.
The location of the capital can be found by buying an embassy. We should do that anyways as it tells us how well it is defended.

We have still 6 reg warriors. The common wisdom says do not upgrade regs, only vets. But we might consider an exception. We have 592 gold and growing (18gpt). We have also still some techs we can sell. And gold in despotism is really only good for upgrades. So why not upgrade these regs? We would have to make some spears for defence, though. That is still faster than producing swords from scratch. And we can use them against injured units first.

@dl123654
do you still need more input or are you ready to prepare for war? upgrade some warriors as well.
I would say, raze towns beyond that swampy area, but keep and starve town close to us and in the east

AK

is that fine with you, AK? and do you have any comments on our early sword war attempt to grab more land. it might end up as a total flop :)

just loaded the save. will look and then post (probably tomorrow on my time which is GMT -5) IIRC, we're mil and seafaring. Archers definitely upgrade to zerks. I don't remember the cost right now. After reading the thread, favor early war. I'll post some ideas after I look at the save. Early inclination is to war with Osman and fill with combat settlers.

There's some trading opportunities to get us into the Middle ages.

Ottos will talk peace and give us 2 of their small towns, but I think we can probably take and raze 1 or 2 more before we're gassed.

I just noticed that Aarhus is building a regular sword  . Do we want to switch to rax - it will only lose 4 shields to do so.

I won't post screenies of the two towns I've already razed

[edit] I think I got off on my turn counts. The next player should play 11 to get us back on track

I see it and will play tomorrow.
Had just enough time for a quick read through the log and it sound good.

Welcome on board Admiral Kutzov.

@rrau - looks good. my comments are now irrelevant. looking forward to playing. 'AK' is fine for future reference.
