Rat 07 - English Role Play

I don't think we have a single library. We're minimum on Monotheism with a researcher in York. I think keen trade-brokering can get us a long way.

I didn't feel like trying to balance MDIs and Knights, so I took the easy way out and just built some Pikemen, which I knew we would need. Plenty of places are ready to build units, so starting up an MDI task-force might be worthwhile.

But it would only be able to do temporary damage to France, as we couldn't hold anything for long nor conquer more than about one or two cities. Doesn't seem quite worth it to me, but it might be fun. I guess I'd rather see India then Russia go next.

Note, Spain is seperated by a single coastal tile from the lands of Russia, so with some boats to step on, Spain is easily accessible as well.

I had a quick look at the save. It's looking good :).

Although it's not really fitting for our roleplay, I agree to take out Russia and India first, for a relatively easy land gain. I don't see a reason to wait, Russia may have iron, but she's still in the AA (maybe not for long though), and Russian cities are small. Ideally we hit them before they get to MA and possibly pikes. Unfortunately, the Russian land is crap and has no luxes. Well, at least we can build some 1-specialist towns there, and up our unit support levels. Madras is useful as canal city. Indian land is better, and our peace deal has run out, or so it seems. Still, I think India can wait until after Russia, they are not getting pikes anytime soon.

Unfortunately our three targets civs - Germany, Spain, France - are the big boys. In particular Germany will be dangerous: largest pop, most land, and cheap libs/unis. I think it would be good to start some wars, to slow down the tech pace. It's going to be hard to keep up as a Monarchy with three AI republics otherwise. Perhaps we can hire Germany against Spain (for a ghastly 20-25 gpt), and next time we declare on France we could get America on our side (for a tech). Germany and Spain may not really be able to hit each other, but at least it will stop them from trading and being nice to each other.

After Russia and India, I think we should aim for France. They are close and have no horses. Unfortunately no luxes either :(. We should be able to disconnect their iron, just hope it's the only one :). Tours would be first objective, and from there raze as much as possible. If we ally with America to soften them up first, we might get pretty far. Perhaps we can strike in the last 10 turns of the next war period.

MM tip: York needs a grass converted to forest to get to 15 spt.

Excellent thinking, zyxy.

Concur about Russia -> India -> France. I also think hiring Germany is a good idea. Note we have a 30 gpt deal with France that is ending soon, so we can use that income for war-mongering.

Yeah, I noted the need for Forest at York in my roster post. For some reason, I never seemed to get some workers there in my turns.

excellent toughts, I was thinking along the same line, but wasn't sure whether we should pull in others. But, hey, we are English noble men, and America and Germany should support our just wars against those powers that want to question our superious Empire status.

Always nice playing after Vol. Everything is so neat!

Start things off by buying the Germans. We pay 23gpt + 10g for an Alliance vs. Spain. Germany is now Gracious.

410AD (156) - Germany learns Invention. France peace treaty renewed

430AD (158) - Found Arabia's pink borders. No contact yet.

440AD (159) - Russia enters MA. They pick up Monotheism as their free tech, lucky us.

Trade Russia Engineering + 105g for Monotheism.
Trade Germany Monotheism + 17gpt + 16g for Invention
Science to 30%. Chivalry in 25 turns.

Contact Arabia. Indeed, they are very backward.
Gift Arabs Writing & Philosophy.

450AD (160) - Spain has Chivalry and Gunpowder. That's a problem.

- Left workers unmoved for next player.
- We can decide to continue self-research or cash.
- Lots of cash for rushing stuff or buying techs.
- Remember to gift Arabs 1 or 2 techs this turn; I forgot.
- Remember to declare on France on turn 166 (I believe that's right)
- Currently have 44/48 military units. Can only make 4 more as of now.

Suggest we either fight a war or go to infrastructure and/or both.

France peace treaty renewed
were you forced to do that? Since we have to declare again in 6 turns, this will cause our rep to be dented. Did you have the 'always renegotiate deal' option enabled? In fact, it should be disabled...

Any comments on how we should proceed from here? A war with Russia as suggested or for now no war and simply fighting Spain and soon France?

lurker's comment:
If you got concessions suchs as GPT the AI will always renew peace.

1096 gold and 30 gpt to France for peace and Feudalism.
I checked the logs and found this. This is where we made a mistake. We should not combine a peace treaty with a gpt payment. :(

Well, maybe I can somehow make France declare on turn 6, maybe they have some units in our territory or so.

Couldn't we have cancelled that deal beforehand though (I would only think to do this in hindsight).

I think we should compromise here. Cancel the Gpt deal and wait the 20 turns out before declaring war. We should then make up for it by being at war longer or something, I don't know what.

ThERat needs to decide what action to take. I would hope it is something that doesn't cause our reputation to be broken (that is, to follow the variant as its currently written). Perhaps there's historical guidance?

I'd say delaying of war is not acceptable. There are only 2 ways out:

- France can be made to declare within the next 6 turns (demand units to leave etc.)

- France signs alliance against us, maybe with Spain. This could happen and would help us. Maybe declaring war on Russia could help in this respect?

It was our mistake to tie peace with gpt, so we have to face the consequences.

I am not sure if this renewed peace treaty counts as a 20 turn deal as no goods are involved, see here. IMO we should continue the variant and declare on 166, we'll learn something at least.

I would attack Russia unless she also has Feud now.

Apparently also if you give concessions - France doesn't want our money . (Most likely, "always renegotiate" is ON).

lurker's comment: do you have anything France doesent have?luxuries?resource?if you do, then you can ally with france for anything.

Oh and ps-can you show some screensots?

save

Pre-Turn
Spain seems to run away currently
maybe we should drive their WW up a bit, since they are a republic
we have 44 units and 24 cities, not much we can do at the moment
the semi min run on tech doesn't really help, hope Germany will help us out sooner or later

1. 460AD
there isn't that much we can do at the moment, really

2. 470AD
land 2 pikes in Spain

IT well, Spain does not attack our 2 pikes

3. 480AD
3 nations know gunpower now, including France
shift the pikes a little, let's see what is going to happen

4. 490AD
pillage Spain a little

5. 500AD
now Germany and France know chivalry as well
get chivalry from Germany for 33gpt, we better switch off research

6. 510AD
time for the next Anglo-French war

IT lose a unit in Spain finally

7. 520AD
attack Spanish galley and lose :(
nth much happening here

IT we get this interesting piece of news
rat07520.jpg

also lose 1 unit in Spain, this war won't be won that way

8.530AD
bring gack 2 units

IT lose last 2 units in Spain

9. 540AD
sink French galley in the north

10. 550AD
sink another galley, we need more galleys to counter, it works well

we have 3 knights and are building up, we have 44 units, 48 allowed
suggest to replace those horses and once the war with France is over, attack either Russia or India with knights, that should not be an issue
IMHO

lurker's comment: Note that if you renew the peace deal after 20 turns, it is a normal peace deal even though it has a timer on it. You can break it with the same consequences as a normal peace deal (i.e none)

In other words, as long as the peace deal has nothing on either side the SECOND time (after 20 turns), you take no penalty for breaking it. There is no problem putting in gpt the first time you make peace.

Its kind of an odd quirk of the game. It could just go to peace without a renegotiate.

now that's really great news then
