RB12 - Roadkill

I was suprised by my luck in the first battle, just as I was suprised Xenikos captured Satsuma with no losses.

I KNOW!! I was sure I'd lose an axe there....I think the spirit of YouHaveChosenPoorly is looking out for us in this one.

In FRFR (the Civ3 no roads game referred to earlier) all roads were razed in conquered lands. So, I would tend to disagree that people might not claim that we're making things too easy for ourselves if we keep conquered roads. :) I wish this point had been made clear at the outset as I might have been tempted to argue for a different map script in that case. However, that's water under the bridge.

Ok, we'll try for captures, and see how things go.

The good news: We captured Osaka. A pair of catapults are on the way to reinforce.

The bad news: Lizzie declared war on us, our research is at 30% and dropping. Also whoever came up with our southern army was smoking something. I mean city raider is good, but making EVERY unit city raider?! And using up all our promotions in the process??? Whatever happened to saving promotions until you know what you're going to need the unit for? What happened to bringing along some units that are actually capable of fighting effectively in the field? So that you can maybe defend your stack, and the cities you plan to take? I mean come on, we don't even have a medic there, and zero flexibility to make one.

So in Japan, we have an army that's good for taking cities but not holding them or conserving its strength. We need to use it quickly and make peace. Fortunately we got lucky, I only lost one axe so far and our forces are mostly healed now. We did lose an unessential road to pillaging though.

In Cordoba, not much is new, other than having built a pair of cats and whipped a lighthouse. Someone started mining without chopping a forest first, doesn't that waste the forest chop shields? Anyway I fixed that, which helped get our two cats out quickly.

On Eastern Isle, our settler is on the way to Incense. There's an axe on the boat and another already waiting there in case Lizzie gets frisky, or you can try to use them as part of the attack force on Lizzie's town on that island.

On the mainland, things are trucking along as normal, though we should be able to grow our cities a bit larger soon as we get a couple more lux connected up. We are actually building a couple missionaries at the moment as one was not enough to convince Kublai to convert. He won't help us against Lizzie either as we have nothing to offer him. We have two galleys in the area, one with a catapult and an axe, and the other empty, which was going to be used to transport the missionaries. There's another galley in the works too as defense in case Lizzie tries to send a transport over.

Here's the save: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/RB12_AD-1050.Civ4SavedGame

Zed - good job on Osaka!

Hmm...lizzie is being opportunist. But then, this war wasn't started with any ships full of troops at the ready - what is she doing? Did you refuse a tribute demand, or was this out of the blue?

Someone started mining without chopping a forest first, doesn't that waste the forest chop shields?

No, you still get the chop hammers :hammer:  once the mine is complete. It was set thusly because Cordoba was using that forest, so it was best to wait the full 4 turns to get the shields and have the mine replace it right away.

Kublai is happy with the English now - very happy. I don't know why he was angry at them earlier...I thought it was due to close borders, which is a tension that wouldn't go away. But it seems like he's found someone else to be angry at. I don't know if missionary spreading is going to convert him, now. We can try it, but it is probably just cash for our shrine (if we ever spawn a Great Prophet, that is)

Good call on the defensive galley. I think we need to pull back that galley with the horse archer and other thing (catapult?) to the mainland to defend in case some macemen/whatever are en route. And build another horse archer asap. Japan - we're in a great position to take Kyoto, and I don't care about any of the other cities. So we can take peace, and grab a few techs and gold after that.

Alex will buy calander from us for 190 gold - which we should take. Also he'll sign open borders with us, which we should do. We should run massive deficit research to try and get to CoL ASAP - and then whip some of those courthouses out. That should help get our economy back on track.

I've been playing Civ since Civ1. I've earned the right to call them shields if I want. :)

The galley with the catapult and horse archer is at the mainland right now. However, I think we might want to take Lizzie's colony on East island if possible. If we don't, our new incense colony will not be safe. Several of our mainland cities are in a position to start pumping troops in the next few turns, which should be adequate to defend against whatever amphibious operation Lizzie might try to mount against our homeland.

We should put a priest specialist somewhere for GPP for the shrine, I suppose. :)

Heh, I was just poking fun - I'm no terminological nazi :)

Yeah, that sounds good. I know Barcelona had a priest specialist running for awhile, so it should have some priest GPP stored up.

I was hoping that the "rest of the week" just meant until the weekend, but I guess Maksim is still gone :)

So here's the roster situation

xenikos
Zed-F
Maksim (skip)
Torello - Up Now!
Knupp715 - On deck

Hmmm, I'm sorry I was busy this weekend and I didnt think I'd be up so quickly so I didnt check until now. I can't play until monday night (tonight). So if the next guy wants to skip me and play today then that's cool. Otherwise if no one goes before about 6-7pm pst I'll take my turn.

T

OK, I'll play tonight UK time.

Objectives:

1. Fight Elizabeth, consolidate our forces on our eastern island, and grab her colony there.
2. Fight Tokugawa, see if there are any easy targets. If not, go for peace.
3. Sell Calendar for money to Alex, to climb out of the 30% pit.
4. Get us into shape.

Hmm...

Oh well. The turn went so-so.

Executive summary - we made peace with Tokugawa, learnt Code Of Laws and Metal Casting, fought off Elizabeth's attack on Madrid... and that's it.

Year 1050 AD (turn zero) - I start out by selling Calendar to Alex for 130 G. I check Tokugawa's island and send an axeman NE to see what he's got over there. He has a crossbowman, who's going to make minced meat out of our entire army, so I quickly sign peace and get 100 G out of it. Switch Cordoba to Archer, as axemen suddenly lost a lot of "oomph!". Raise science to 80% - we need those courthouses ASAP, and it's only 20G difference to have them four turns earlier.

Year 1060 (1) - Barcelona builds Missionary, starts Archer. Toledo Barracks -> Granary. Exploring Galey meets Peter. I sell him Horseback Riding, Monotheism and 170 G for Metal Casting. I don't trade Alphabet to him. Looks like Alex has come with a Settler to our incense area, and he's going to beat us there.

Year 1070 (2) - Lizzy sends a small fleet - two galleys, two swords, two axes. Alex's goons explore the island, meanwhile we settle on the northern incense, and begin building granary (a missionary will come to establish a religion and jump-start our culture before the end of my turn).

Year 1080 (3) - Lizzy killed an axeman I sent out to scout on the eastern island but lost a crossbowman. Her city is defended by four longbowmen anyway.Meanwhile, her army spreads out to the west of Madrid. I upgrade one of our warriors to an axe, and dial CoL back a couple of turns. A Horse Archer flawlessly kills an axeman.

Years 1090-1110 (4-6) - Nothing, except that the other axe is killed by our HA while the swords are off pillaging useless mine and wheat farm. We then lose an axe against a sword, but finish him off with our HA again. Oh, and we sign Open Borders with Alex after checking he's not disliked by anyone.

Year 1120 (7) - CoL comes in, I start on monarchy as it's relatively cheap. Oh, Lizzy has a Caravel parked in York.

Year 1130 (8) - Lizzy builds Hanging Gardens. We kill her last sword near Madrid with the same horse archer.

Years 1140-1150 (9-10) - I order a few courthouses here and there. Science is down to 20%. Lizzy switches to Theocracy/Hereditary Rule. Peter the agnostic organizes his atheists.

Overall, nothing terrible happened, but I get this sinking feeling that we are running out of time, and I haven't got a clue what to do to reverse this trend.

Maksim, you attached the save from before your turns, not after. I need the current save to continue.

Well, I just stared at the game situation for like 20 minutes having no idea what to do. I've never been in a situation like this. So finally I just said f*** it. What was the result?

What's that rubble under our horse archer? Yes it WAS York. I sacked York. If I sacked York I could invade Lower England! Well, maybe not. We probably want to peace with England now and then prepare to invade/finish Japan. I don't see how we can possibly win without being a crazy bug-eyed warmonger.

Notes:
1) I didn't have too many build choices to make, I think I just went for another couple horse archers, and 1 more courthouse.
2) There's a buddhist missionary sleeping in Madrid, I couldn't spare the Galley to take him to Kublai's lands, which I assume is his destiny, unless we're planning on making/taking another city.
3) York was the holy city of Judaism and I believe Taoism, so it sucks to be a Jew now.
4) I tested Peace terms and Liz was willing to give us peace and monarchy and 20 gold, but we are 2 turns from Monarchy, so maybe try for a different tech or all her gold (220)
5) I disbanded all our warriors (only about 3) because we didn't need them, can't spare the gold to upgrade them, and we were paying too much in support.
6) I killed York on turn 10 so the troops are still scattered as you can see in the shot. Sorry if all I left the next player is cleanup, that's just the way it came out.

Good luck... I think Knupp is up now.

Good job, Torello!

I see Lizzy's got some Windmills. Is there a chance we could get Machinery out of her?
